Art Night: Renovation's SF Visual Arts Festival!
Art Night will be a festival of the visual arts in science fiction and fantasy. Workshops, demos, games, talks and panels, films and other visual arts will fill the convention center. Artists will be on hand in the Art Show and at Art Night events to meet fans and fellow artists. Everything kicks off with the Chesley Awards and goes on into the night!
The Chesley Awards
The Chesley Award ceremony will be held at 6 pm on Thursday, August 18, as the keystone event for Art Night. The Chesley Awards are given by the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA) and recognize individual artistic works and achievements in eleven categories, including cover illustration in hardcover, paperback, and magazine formats, interior illustration, unpublished color and monochrome work, three-dimensional art, product and gaming-related illustration, art direction, and overall artistic achievement. The Chesley Award winners are nominated and then voted on by ASFA members. This year's awards are for works first published or exhibited in 2010.
Renovation members attending the awards are invited to join ASFA for a short reception in honor of the nominees prior to the awards ceremony. Both the ceremony and the reception will be held in one of the grand ballrooms in the Atlantis hotel, adjacent to the convention center via the sky bridge.
A Chance to Meet the Artists
All of the artists participating in the Art Show who are attending the convention are invited to meet their fans in the art show following the Chesley Awards to discuss and showcase their artwork on display.
Live Art Demonstrations
Sculptor Vincent Villafranca, painters Bob Eggleton, Alan F. Beck, Bridget Duffy, graphic artists Howard Tayler, Stu Shiffman, Taral Wayne and more will be doing live demonstrations of their art. Stop in and see their work develop in between attending programming, visiting the Art Show which will open until late as part of the event, or trying various arts and crafts yourself at stations around the exhibit hall and concourse.
Workshops and Games
Get hands-on and do it yourself! Print making, origami, fancy hair braiding, finger painting, beading, quilting, knitting, costuming ... and that's just the beginning! If you have an art or craft you'd like to teach or demo, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Highlights of the Film Festival
We have so many hours of film you could do nothing but watch and discuss Renovation's Independent Film Festival and have an amazing convention, but we understand most members won't choose to do that. Renovation Film Festival Director Nat Saenz will therefore be selecting "best of the film festival" highlights and showing those films on Art Night.
