Art @ Renovation

Art @ Renovation includes original artwork and prints on display and for sale in the Art Show, many of which will go to the art auction on Sunday, a varied Art Program throughout the convention, and Art Night, a visual arts festival throughout the evening of Thursday, August 18. Art Night kicks off with the Chesley Awards, recognizing individual artistic works and achievements in science fiction and fantasy, and continues with panels, games, workshops and demonstrations, and highlights of the Renovation Film Festival.

More about...

The Art Show and program will feature the work of our Artist Guest of Honor, Boris Vallejo, who brings with him his wife and partner Julie Bell and her sons, fellow artists David and Anthony Palumbo. Boris will be participating in programming Wednesday through Saturday. Highlights include a presentation with Julie about their process working from models and photo references for Art Night on Thursday, Art Portfolio Reviews on Friday (space limited: sign up in advance by email to, and the Artist Guest of Honor talk about his amazing body of work on Saturday afternoon. When not on programming you will often be able to find Boris and family at their tables in the Dealers' room.

We are pleased to have so many wonderful artists and craftspeople participating in the convention. Science fiction and fantasy art has long been an important part of Worldcon, through the Art Show and Art Program, the Artist Guest of Honor, the Artist Hugos and the Chesley Awards. Renovation will include all of these traditional elements - and much more! We aim to maximize the opportunities for fans and artists to interact and for artists to meet and mentor one another. We also welcome a number of art directors to the program, with their special insights into industry processes and how to manage both your art and your career.

We have been keen throughout our planning to listen carefully to the art community, taking their ideas and feedback on board. We are especially delighted to have the support of a brain trust comprising Lou Anders, Bob Eggleton, Richard Hescox, John Picacio and Jannie Shea, and we thank them particularly for their time, ideas and feedback.

Thanks to Our Sponsors

We are deeply grateful to our three sponsors, without whose support Art @ Renovation would not have been possible.

Our lead sponsor is The Frank Foundation. The Frank Foundation was established by Howard and Jane Frank in 1997 to support the imaginative arts. Since that time the Foundation has made grants to institutions and organizations for various projects, including exhibitions, educational programs and publications.

Jane Frank is not only supporting us as a sponsor but in her other guise as proprietor of Worlds of Wonder will be exhibiting the work of six tremendous artists in the Renovation art show. Jane will also be participating in our program - look out in particular for her panel on Collecting Fine Art or her conversation with fellow art historian and writer Karen Haber Silverberg.

Our second sponsor is IlluXCon, the professional convention about art of the fantastic, now in its fourth year. While we greatly appreciate IlluxCon's kind financial support, we would also like to acknowledge the inspiration of the energy and sense of community that is apparent throughout this unique event. We have drawn many ideas from it, leading to things like the Meet the Artist events we'll be having at the Art Show and the print version of our Artist Showcase, which will be available at the convention.

Our last sponsor is the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA). ASFA is a 501(c)(3) which exists to educate the public about science fiction and fantasy art by encouraging artistic talent, supporting the efforts and needs of working artists, and facilitating networking among artists, publishers, art patrons, art directors, art show directors, collectors, art students and anyone interested in in the genre. ASFA has long been associated with Worldcon, particularly through the Chesley Awards. The Chesley Awards have been presented by ASFA at Worldcon since 1985 for individual works and achievements in the field.
