A Dream of Fire by J R Rasmussen Pdf

A vengeful dragon. A forgotten terror. And the one man who is least qualified to stop them. Nothing is more dear to Griffin than his magic school, but for a man with no magic, life there has its challenges. They laugh at him. They exclude him. And that's just his fellow teachers. So when a dragon no one else has seen delivers a chilling warning for Griffin's ears alone, it's no surprise that his colleagues don't take him seriously. Unfortunately, convincing them that the magistery stands at the brink of destruction is only the beginning of his troubles. As an ancient struggle between dragons and men reignites, Griffin's only hope lies in deciphering the secrets of a long-dead madman. But the deeper he goes, the less he knows who to trust, on legs or wings. Dodging both suspicion and betrayal, Griffin is caught in a desperate race for the one weapon that can save his home-or reduce it to ashes in an instant.

Anecdotes and Afterthoughts: Literature as a Teacher’s Curriculum by Edward Podsiadlik III Pdf

This qualitative journey explores how literature informs and challenges my under¬standing of teaching and learning. Insights, questions, and conflicts are revealed through a series of essays in which my evolving teacher identity is illuminated through literature and imagination. Hopefully reading this portrayal of literature, which has been a source of educational insight and imagination for me, will be of use to other educators as they reflect on their own teaching. The primary works of literature used to facilitate this journey are: The Red Badge of Courage (1895), Les Miserables (1862), and American Idiot (2004); Light in August (1932), Seinfeld scripts (1991-98), and Frankenstein (1818); and The Odyssey, Night (1960), and The Souls of Black Folk (1903). By delving beneath my exterior ‘teacher mask,’ a collage of images, anecdotes, reflections, aspirations, and fears is exposed. As a resource for pre-service teachers or a reflective exercise for veteran teachers, this study aims to benefit educators by providing a new pathway through which to better understand their intrinsic identities as teachers. Each chapter concludes with “Recommendations for Reflection” that readers are encouraged to consider individu¬ally and/or collectively. The spirit of daydreams allows me to integrate literature, autobiography, and imagi¬nation through inventive and inspired discourses with literary figures, using au¬thentic quotations as content for original commentaries that further examine the intrinsic nature of teacher identity. My hope is that this journey will inspire other educators to further reflect on realities and possibilities of what it means to be a teacher.

The Living Sea of Waking Dreams by Richard Flanagan Pdf

From the acclaimed Booker Prize-winning author comes a dazzling novel of family, love and love's disappointments Anna's aged mother is dying. Condemned by her children's pity to living, subjected to increasingly desperate medical interventions, she turns her focus to her hospital window, through which she escapes into visions of horror and delight. When Anna's finger vanishes and a few months later her knee disappears, Anna too feels the pull of the window. She begins to see that all around her, others are similarly vanishing, yet no one else notices. All Anna can do is keep her mother alive. But the window keeps opening wider, taking Anna and the reader ever deeper into an eerily beautiful story of grief and possibility, of loss and love and orange-bellied parrots. Hailed on publication in Australia as Richard Flanagan's greatest novel yet, The Living Sea of Waking Dreams is a rising ember storm illuminating what remains when the inferno beckons: one part elegy, one part dream, one part hope.

Moths to a Flame by Sarah Ash Pdf

Twin slaves. A divided city. A goddess’s wrath. The first novel from the author of the Tears of Artamon trilogy, “an innovative fantasist” (Asimov’s). The once-wondrous land of Myn-Dhiel has suffered under the rule of the House of Memizhon. The decadent king and queen are slowly going insane, and the kingdom seems likely to sink under the weight of its decay. Twins Lai and Laili have spent their quiet lives as initiates of the Goddess on the peaceful island of Ael Lahi. But when they are captured and sold as slaves in the city, Lai must learn to fight for his life in the Arena while Laili is forced into service as the Arkhan’s concubine. The twins ultimately find their place in the intrigues and rivalries of the corrupt court. But discontent is simmering among the city’s oppressed people. When a mysterious cloud of moon moths brings a plague, revolution threatens to bring down the House of Memizhon. Lai and Laili may hold the key to saving the city—unless they too are engulfed in the conflagration. Praise for the Tears of Artamon Trilogy “Unusual . . . Exotic . . . Well worth the read!” —Katherine Kurtz, New York Times–bestselling author “A splendid tale . . . Ash is destined to be one of the bright luminaries of fantasy.” —Dennis L. McKiernan, national bestselling author “Rousing. . . . with its vivid 18th-century European flavor and fallen angels who evoke Paradise Lost. Lovers of big, complex fantasy sagas (think Robert Jordan or George R.R. Martin) will be well pleased.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
