All-American Desserts by Judith M. Fertig Pdf

All-American Desserts is a treasure-trove of 400 desserts that tantalize Americans across this great country, whether traditional sweets, back-of-the-box classics, or newly inspired creations. Intrepid dessert hunter Judith Fertig has ventured far and wide to gather these scrumptious treats together for others to discover and enjoy. Every type of sweet satisfaction is here: cookies, cakes, pies, puddings, cobblers, slumps, turnovers, cupcakes - even candy. A true American dessert is one that either was adapted from another culinary tradition to suit American tastes (Greek Deep Dish Custard Tart, Germantown Lebkuchen) or was created by an American cook using American ingredients (Vermont maple syrup in Maple and Hickory Nut Apple Crisp, New Mexican pine nuts in Ole Mole Cookies). All-American Desserts has all the classics plus lesser-known regional favorites, and each dessert has its own story, which Fertig puts into historical context along with the recipe.

Betty's All-American by Jerry D. Davis Pdf

About the Book Betty’s All-American is an autobiography of Jerry D. Davis through the ups and downs of life, some happy, some sad. As in any life, there is both triumph and tragedy. Davis struggled through a family history of alcoholism to finally achieve forty-two years of sobriety that started on September 1, 1979. Another struggle has been with his faith, but he learned that no matter what you go through, there can always be redemption. If you are raised in the church, you can always go back. He made a promise forty-two years ago that when he meets God Almighty, he is damn sure going to do it sober.

Analyzing Christmas in Film by Lauren Rosewarne Pdf

Film plays a vital role in the celebration of Christmas. For decades, it has taught audiences about what the celebration of the season looks like – from the decorations to the costumes and to the expected snowy weather – as well as mirrors our own festivities back to us. Films like It’s a Wonderful Life and Home Alone have come to play key roles in real-life domestic celebrations: watching such titles has become, for many families, every bit as important as tree-trimming and leaving cookies out for Santa. These films have exported the American take on the holiday far and wide and helped us conjure an image of the perfect holiday. Rather than settling the ‘what is a Christmas film?’ debate – indeed, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are discussed within – Analyzing Christmas in Film: Santa to the Supernatural focuses on the how Christmas is presented on the deluge of occasions when it appears. While most Christmas films are secular, religion makes many cameos, appearing through Nativity references, storylines involving spiritual rebirth, the framing of Santa as a Christ-like figure and the all-importance of family, be it the Holy family or just those gathered around the dining table. Also explored are popular narratives involving battles with stress and melancholy, single parents and Christmas martyrs, visits from ghosts and angels, big cities and small towns, break-ups and make-ups and the ticking clock of mortality. Nearly 1000 films are analyzed in this volume to determine what the portrayal of Christmas reveals about culture, society and faith as well as sex roles, consumerism, aesthetics and aspiration.

The Jack of All Trades: New Ideas for American Boys by Daniel Carter Beard Pdf

It was not the authorÕs original intention to produce a series of boysÕ books. On the contrary, he expected that his work in this line would begin and end with ÒThe American BoyÕs Handy Book.Ó The great popularity of that book is a constant source of gratification and pleasure to the author; but he was not a little surprised and embarrassed when he discovered that in place of satisfying the lads he had only whetted their appetite for more material in the same line. Letters from boys in many parts of the British Provinces, and from all over the United States, convinced the writer that he had yet work to do for them, and the revised and enlarged edition of ÒThe American BoyÕs Handy BookÓ was issued. After a brief period of time the quaintly worded letters in boyish handwriting began again to increase the mail left at the authorÕs studio, and this time he laid aside his brush and pencil to produce ÒThe Outdoor Handy Book.Ó It is hoped that the present demand for new ideas for boys will be fully satisfied by ÒThe Jack of All Trades.Ó To the best of the authorÕs knowledge and belief there is not a thing described in this book which has not been proved practical by the experiments of himself or some boy or boys. Parts of this book have appeared in various periodicals, but all these chapters have been revised and enlarged. It is now a generally accepted truth that the so-called skill of the hand is in reality the skill of a trained mind. The necessity, in work or play, of constantly overcoming new obstacles and solving new problems, develops a strong and normal mind and body. There can be little doubt that the rude schooling and hard knocks of a pioneerÕs life rejuvenated our race and developed those qualities in the characters of Americans, without which Washington would have been but a country gentleman and Lincoln a village store-keeper. Had little Abe Lincoln been reared under the care of a foreign woman with cap and ribbons (i.e. a French nurse), his strong manly character would never have been developed and our country would have lost one of its grandest patriots and history its most unique figure. Aside from these vitally important facts, art demands that our youth should be encouraged to do things for themselves, to produce things by their own labor. The most finished product of the machine cannot appeal to the heart of a real artist as does some useful and homely object which still bears the marks of its makerÕs hands.

All American, All the Way by Phil Nordyke Pdf

On Sunday, September 17, 1944, the 82nd Airborne Division jumped into history with the First Allied Airborne Army in a daring daylight parachute and glider-borne assault to capture key bridges at the start of Operation Market Garden. Following weeks of heavy combat in Holland, the All Americans (the name of the division in World War I when Sgt. Alvin York was one of its soldiers) were withdrawn from the frontlines for a well-deserved rest, which was almost immediately interrupted by the Battle of the Bulge, where they once again found themselves in the thick of the action, a position that remained familiar to them for the rest of the war. Following VE Day, the 82nd became part of the Allied forces occupying Berlin.

New Ideas for American Boys; The Jack of All Trades by Daniel Carter Beard Pdf

"New Ideas for American Boys" by Daniel Carter Beard is a sports and amusement book for boys. According to the author's knowledge and belief, there is not a thing described in this book that has not been proved practical by the experiments of himself or some boy[vi] or boys. It is the object of the author, in the chapters devoted to animal life, to teach the boys to look upon all animals with the same thoughtful kindness with which they might view their own undeveloped brothers. Excerpt: "Bird's-Nests in Washington's Coat. All boys know that Washington loved his country, but few know that he was a bird-fancier. That the father of our country loved the native birds is attested by the fact that they built nests in the wooden wrinkles of his sleeves and in the hollow ends of the roll of parchment which he held in his hand. His favorite bird was the red-headed woodpecker. He had it on the brain, and although each year a brood of little red-headed birds were hatched in his head, the dear old patriot never made a wry face, but with a benign smile he gazed over the roof of the livery stable across the street."

The American Contessa by Margaret H. Van Vechten Pdf

In 1959, thirty-five-year-old Peggy was swept away into another time and country. After the unexpected death of her husband, Peggy sought a new backdrop and moved with her four-year-old twin sons, Craig and Mark, and eleven-year-old daughter, Barbara, to Florence, Italy. It was a nine-day voyage that changed her life and ultimately rooted her family in two countries. The American Contessa narrates the adventure of this middle-class American widow who traveled to Italy intending to stay for one year, yet remained there for twenty. This memoir tells about the struggles of adopting a new language and learning about centuries-old traditions and mores that she both admired and misunderstood. Her story chronicles her marriage to Conte Giorgio Magherini, a member of the Italian-landed aristocracy, and of the family's sojourns through numerous Tuscan villas before coming to rest at Norcenni, Giorgio's ancestral home. With photos included, this memoir captures the enchantment of Italy through the eyes of Peggy's family and provides an engaging and insightful look into the world of an American contessa.
