Architectural Gardens is a portfolio of lushly illustrated landscapes in California wine country--each project a lesson in the alchemy of garden design. Digging deeper than the typical monograph, each of the ten projects by Lucas and Lucas in Architectural Gardens includes a design narrative, detailed captions, site plan, top ten plant list, and design lessons that readers can apply to their own gardens. It also includes a roundup of the firm's favorite plants best suited to different types of properties (woodland settings, traditional estates, and country retreats, for example) and employed for different purposes (such as screening, drought tolerance, punch of color, fast growth).

Mughal Architecture & Gardens by George Michell,Amit Pasricha Pdf

The buildings of Mughal India constitute one of the world's greatest architectural traditions. Whether it is the Taj Mahal in Agra, the Red Fort in Delhi or the palaces of Fatehpur Sikri, these and other similarly well-preserved monuments of the 16th and 17th centuries testify to the refined taste and unlimited resources of a line of powerful patrons, notably the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Mughal architecture is a remarkable hybrid that fuses building forms, techniques and decorative schemes imported from Iran and Central Asia with long-established Indian materials and techniques. The results are both structurally innovative and aesthetically spectacular, a testament to the genius of Indian masons and craftsmen. The first comprehensive survey of the subject in more than 20 years, this lavish volume documents nearly 100 Mughal sites and monuments in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Mughal Architecture and Gardens is enhanced by over 250 stunning colour photographs by Amit Pasricha, one of the most talented architectural photographers working today. His photographs are accompanied by over 80 specially commissioned building plans and site layouts. Sumptuously illustrated with a text by renowned architectural historian George Michell, this book is of interest to students and scholars as well as travellers and general readers. AUTHOR: George Michell is an architectural historian, specialising in ancient Indian architecture. He obtained his PhD from the School of Oriental African Studies, University of London, has directed courses on Asian architecture at the Architectural Association, London, and was co-editor of the journal Art and Archaeology Research Papers from 1972 to 1982. Since the 1980s, he has co-directed an international team of scholars and students at Vijayanagara, the medieval Hindu site in Karnataka. George Mitchell has also lectured at universities and museums throughout the USA, Europe, India and Australia. A Natural Balance by Alex Novell,John LeRoux Pdf

A botanical garden should be more than a repository of plants: it should be a place for people to enjoy the natural world and to participate in learning and research. The creators of the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens at Acadia University understood this, giving students a building and gardens for both quiet relaxation and study. The Centre and Gardens took nearly three years to research and design, and a further two years to build. Now, twenty years after completion, the Centre and Gardens are maturing, and being nurtured by a dedicated team for the enjoyment of generations to come. Landscape architect Alex Novell and architectural historian John Leroux tell the story of the design, construction, and features of the Centre and Gardens at Acadia. Lavishly illustrated with full-colour images, A Natural Balance is both an indispensable book for anyone interested in the plants and trees of the Acadian forest and a visual record of a spectacular instance of North American collegiate architecture.

The Architectural Imagination of Edith Wharton by Annette Benert Pdf

Edith Wharton has recently returned to prominence as a major American novelist. But few have taken her architectural work as seriously as she herself took it, or noticed its effects on her career. Two early architectural books and three travel works give sustained critical attention to the built environment. Early novels graphically portray the physical miseries of the poor and marginalized and their course in hierarchies of class and gender. By contrast, her letters consistently celebrate the tastes and manners of the elite. At its best, her fiction embodies this tension - the beauty and grace of elegant houses and public spaces, juxtaposed to their effects on those under their control. This book tracks Wharton's literary and architectural work in tandem, revealing their complex relationship. It also foregrounds the odd symmetry of her career, which began and ended in fierce attachment to traditional values, moved from delight in Italy to despair for France, and centered on the brilliantly crafted structures and spaces of the prewar novels. Annette Larson Benert is Associate Professor of English at DeSales University.
