Trouble in Nuala Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

When Inspector Shanti de Silva moves with his English wife, Jane, to his new post in the sleepy hill town of Nuala he anticipates a more restful life than police work in the big city entails. However an arrogant plantation owner with a lonely wife, a crusading lawyer, and a death in suspicious circumstances present him with a riddle that he will need all his experience to solve. Set on the exotic island of Ceylon in the 1930s, Trouble in Nuala is an entertaining and relaxing mystery spiced with humour and a colourful cast of characters. Interview with the Author Q. There are so many murder mysteries around, what makes Trouble in Nuala stand out? A. To a great extent its setting in Ceylon, modern-day Sri Lanka, in the days when the island was still a British colony. Then, as now, the island was a fascinating place not just for its wonderful scenery and wildlife but also its mix of peoples who seem to have recovered extraordinarily well from the tragedies of their recent past. The majority are Sinhalese, who see themselves as the original owners of the island. They are followed by the Tamils who migrated over the centuries from Southern India. Add the legacy of the early Portuguese and Dutch settlers and you have a very rich culture. Although the story sits firmly in the mystery genre, at the time when it's set, colonialism also raised issues that my characters have to deal with and that provides an extra layer of interest. Q. What's your connection to the country? A. I've been lucky enough to visit and I fell in love with it straight away. My books are often inspired by my travels and as I'd been planning to write a new detective series for some time, it presented the perfect setting. Q. The mystery genre is usually very plot driven. When you wrote Trouble in Nuala did the characters or the plot come first? A. Shanti de Silva was inspired by various people I met on my travels around Sri Lanka and he took shape in my mind early on. He's pragmatic but principled with a mischievous sense of humour; at times impetuous and occasionally a rebel. As my plots develop though, I usually find that characters deepen and that was certainly the case here as Shanti de Silva and the other characters revealed themselves. Q. So what next? A. A second Inspector de Silva mystery is already well advanced and you can read a sample at the end of Trouble in Nuala. After that, there are plenty more adventures for de Silva queueing up to be written.

This is the inspiring account of a family's struggle to break into their son's autistic world - and how a beautiful retreiver dog made the real difference. Dale was still a baby when his parents realised that something wasn't right. Worried, his mother Nuala took him to see several doctors, before finally hearing the word 'autism' for the first time. Scared but determined that Dale should live a fulfilling life, Nuala describes her despair at her son's condition, her struggle to prevent Dale being excluded from a 'normal' education and her sense of hopeless isolation. Dale's autism was severe and violent and family life was a daily battleground. But the Gardner's lives were transformed when they welcomed a gorgeous Golden Retriever into the family. The special bond between Dale and his dog Henry helped them to produce the breakthrough in Dale they had long sought. From taking a bath to saying 'I love you', Henry helped introduce Dale to all the normal activities most parents take for granted, and set him on the road to being the charming and well-adjusted young man he is today. This is a heartrending and fascinating account of how one devoted and talented dog helped a little boy conquer his autism.

In a small town on the Jersey side of the Palisades, the desperate lonliness of adolescence and a strange mix of race and culture collide during the turbulent 60's. Bill Gleeson has fashioned a big city play just a few miles from Manhattan, a short boat ride across the Hudson River. Whitey Larkin is a fish out of that flawed murky water, an orphan boy, shy and sensitive, struggling to be heard, struggling to find his place in the world. In his way is the comic character of his Aunt Nuala, the half wicked, mostly conflicted step parent determined to raise him up right in a volatile era. Equally memorable is the character of Larkin, the unemployed bumbling husband, Whitey's adopted father. Throw in an escaped Nazi fresh off an Argentinian banana boat that sets the whole cast spinning in comic circles, and you've got that rare combination of a play, one that is both moving and laugh out loud funny.

If It Wasn't Love Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

All Religion is about the denial of God. This is a book about Life, Love, Sexuality, Death and God. It is a story of many people’s stories, but most of all it is my story. Here for the first time is a truth birthed from fear and oppression and redeemed by love. When I first started putting the book together, I had some scattered ideas as to how I would do this. Some of the scenes written in the early seventies and eighties were never intended to form part of a whole. They stood alone, as a lecture here or an article there. This is in fact true for most of the project in hand. It is my hope and indeed my belief that the book holds together as one man’s attempt to be honest with God. I hasten to add that in no way is this a holy book. The words erection and Resurrection, masturbation and Holy Mass all appear with equal authenticity, pain and celebration. It is no book for the pious or those seeking a quick fix.

A Nest of Idle Puppets Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle

Little Larch seems, at first glance, a perfectly ordinary place. The children are well-behaved and the scenery is beautiful. But look closer, you won’t have noticed this before: Little Larch is ruled by a prejudiced tyrant whom everybody calls the Mayoress. The hierarchy is divided into three primary groups—the plebeians, the commoners; the neutral ones, who refuse to pick a side; and the patricians, the upper-class pseudo-nobility, who will do everything in their power to keep the Mayoress in power. Then there’s Hildegard, whose plebeian family is just like any other. Hildegard, under normal circumstances, wouldn’t have considered trying to change the social hierarchy. She knows only a fool would attempt to overthrow the seemingly all-powerful Mayoress. But this is different. The witch who (rather reluctantly) agreed to turn Hildegard’s heart to ice wants something to change. In any case, the next Election Day is nearing, and if she wins this one, the Mayoress will get to do whatever she wants once and for all. Magic must be added to the chaotic mess to give Hildegard and her mysterious ally a shot at succeeding, but beware—there’s a price for everything, including doing whatever it takes to win. So there goes the story: a bizarre tale of social commentary, strange, deadly magic, and the consequences of taking shortcuts. The ultimate question is, Does the end justify the means?
