Classification and Structure Theory of Lie Algebras of Smooth Sections by Hasan Gündoğan Pdf

Lie groups and their "derived objects", Lie algebras, appear in various fields of mathematics and physics. At least since the beginning of the 20th century, and after the famous works of Wilhelm Killing, Elie Cartan, Eugenio Elia Levi, Anatoly Malcev and Igor Ado on the structure of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, the classification and structure theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras has become an interesting and fairly vast field of interest. This dissertation focusses on the structure of Lie algebras of smooth and k-times differentiable sections of finite-dimensional Lie algebra bundles, which are generalizations of the famous and well-understood affine Kac-Moody algebras. Besides answering the immediate structural questions (center, commutator algebra, derivations, centroid, automorphism group), this work approaches a classification of section algebras by homotopy theory. Furthermore, we determine a universal invariant symmetric bilinear form on Lie algebras of smooth sections and use this form to define a natural central extension which is universal, at least in the case of Lie algebra bundles with compact base manifold.

Singularities of Differentiable Maps, Volume 1 by V.I. Arnold,S.M. Gusein-Zade,Alexander N. Varchenko Pdf

Singularity theory is a far-reaching extension of maxima and minima investigations of differentiable functions, with implications for many different areas of mathematics, engineering (catastrophe theory and the theory of bifurcations), and science. The three parts of this first volume of a two-volume set deal with the stability problem for smooth mappings, critical points of smooth functions, and caustics and wave front singularities. The second volume describes the topological and algebro-geometrical aspects of the theory: monodromy, intersection forms, oscillatory integrals, asymptotics, and mixed Hodge structures of singularities. The first volume has been adapted for the needs of non-mathematicians, presupposing a limited mathematical background and beginning at an elementary level. With this foundation, the book's sophisticated development permits readers to explore more applications than previous books on singularities.

Structure and Geometry of Lie Groups by Joachim Hilgert,Karl-Hermann Neeb Pdf

This self-contained text is an excellent introduction to Lie groups and their actions on manifolds. The authors start with an elementary discussion of matrix groups, followed by chapters devoted to the basic structure and representation theory of finite dimensinal Lie algebras. They then turn to global issues, demonstrating the key issue of the interplay between differential geometry and Lie theory. Special emphasis is placed on homogeneous spaces and invariant geometric structures. The last section of the book is dedicated to the structure theory of Lie groups. Particularly, they focus on maximal compact subgroups, dense subgroups, complex structures, and linearity. This text is accessible to a broad range of mathematicians and graduate students; it will be useful both as a graduate textbook and as a research reference.

Encyclopaedia of Mathematics by Michiel Hazewinkel Pdf

This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Classification and Identification of Lie Algebras by Libor Šnob,Pavel Winternitz Pdf

The purpose of this book is to serve as a tool for researchers and practitioners who apply Lie algebras and Lie groups to solve problems arising in science and engineering. The authors address the problem of expressing a Lie algebra obtained in some arbitrary basis in a more suitable basis in which all essential features of the Lie algebra are directly visible. This includes algorithms accomplishing decomposition into a direct sum, identification of the radical and the Levi decomposition, and the computation of the nilradical and of the Casimir invariants. Examples are given for each algorithm. For low-dimensional Lie algebras this makes it possible to identify the given Lie algebra completely. The authors provide a representative list of all Lie algebras of dimension less or equal to 6 together with their important properties, including their Casimir invariants. The list is ordered in a way to make identification easy, using only basis independent properties of the Lie algebras. They also describe certain classes of nilpotent and solvable Lie algebras of arbitrary finite dimensions for which complete or partial classification exists and discuss in detail their construction and properties. The book is based on material that was previously dispersed in journal articles, many of them written by one or both of the authors together with their collaborators. The reader of this book should be familiar with Lie algebra theory at an introductory level.

Loops in Group Theory and Lie Theory by Péter Nagy,Karl Strambach Pdf

In this book the theory of binary systems is considered as a part of group theory and, in particular, within the framework of Lie groups. The novelty is the consequent treatment of topological and differentiable loops as topological and differentiable sections in Lie groups. The interplay of methods and tools from group theory, differential geometry and topology, symmetric spaces, topological geometry, and the theory of foliations is what gives a special flavour to the results presented in this book. It is the first monograph devoted to the study of global loops. So far books on differentiable loops deal with local loops only. This theory can only be used partially for the theory of global loops since non-associative local structures have, in general, no global forms. The text is addressed to researchers in non-associative algebra and foundations of geometry. It should prove enlightening to a broad range of readers, including mathematicians working in group theory, the theory of Lie groups, in differential and topological geometry, and in algebraic groups. The authors have produced a text that is suitable not only for a graduate course, but also for selfstudy in the subjectby interested graduate students. Moreover, the material presented can be used for lectures and seminars in algebra, topological algebra and geometry.

An Introduction to the Representation Theory of Groups by Emmanuel Kowalski Pdf

Representation theory is an important part of modern mathematics, not only as a subject in its own right but also as a tool for many applications. It provides a means for exploiting symmetry, making it particularly useful in number theory, algebraic geometry, and differential geometry, as well as classical and modern physics. The goal of this book is to present, in a motivated manner, the basic formalism of representation theory as well as some important applications. The style is intended to allow the reader to gain access to the insights and ideas of representation theory--not only to verify that a certain result is true, but also to explain why it is important and why the proof is natural. The presentation emphasizes the fact that the ideas of representation theory appear, sometimes in slightly different ways, in many contexts. Thus the book discusses in some detail the fundamental notions of representation theory for arbitrary groups. It then considers the special case of complex representations of finite groups and discusses the representations of compact groups, in both cases with some important applications. There is a short introduction to algebraic groups as well as an introduction to unitary representations of some noncompact groups. The text includes many exercises and examples.

Simple Lie Algebras Over Fields of Positive Characteristic: Structure theory by Helmut Strade Pdf

The problem of classifying the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over fields of characteristic p > 0 is a long-standing one. Work on this question during the last 45 years has been directed by the Kostrikin-Shafarevich Conjecture of 1966, which states that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 5 a finite-dimensional restricted simple Lie algebra is classical or of Cartan type. This conjecture was proved for p > 7 by Block and Wilson in 1988. The generalization of the Kostrikin-Shafarevich Conjecture for the general case of not necessarily restricted Lie algebras and p > 7 was announced in 1991 by Strade and Wilson and eventually proved by Strade in 1998. The final Block-Wilson-Strade-Premet Classification Theorem is a landmark result of modern mathematics and can be formulated as follows: Every finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 3 is of classical, Cartan, or Melikian type. In the three-volume book, the author is assembling the proof of the Classification Theorem with explanations and references. The goal is a state-of-the-art account on the structure and classification theory of Lie algebras over fields of positive characteristic leading to the forefront of current research in this field. This first volume is devoted to preparing the ground for the classification work to be performed in the second and third volume. The concise presentation of the general theory underlying the subject matter and the presentation of classification results on a subclass of the simple Lie algebras for all odd primesmake this volume an invaluable source and reference for all research mathematicians and advanced graduate students in albegra.
