The Elephant in the Room by Holly Goldberg Sloan Pdf

From the New York Times bestselling author of Counting by 7s comes a heartfelt story about "the importance of compassion and bravery when facing life’s challenges” (Kirkus) for fans of The One and Only Ivan and Front Desk. It's been almost a year since Sila's mother traveled halfway around the world to Turkey, hoping to secure the immigration paperwork that would allow her to return to her family in the United States. The long separation is almost impossible for Sila to withstand. But things change when Sila accompanies her father (who is a mechanic) outside their Oregon town to fix a truck. There, behind an enormous stone wall, she meets a grandfatherly man who only months before won the state lottery. Their new alliance leads to the rescue of a circus elephant named Veda, and then to a friendship with an unusual boy named Mateo, proving that comfort and hope come in the most unlikely of places. A moving story of family separation and the importance of the connection between animals and humans, this novel has the enormous heart and uplifting humor that readers have come to expect from the beloved author of Counting by 7s. “I couldn’t stop reading—I had to find out what would happen. An unusual and lovely real-life fairy tale.” —Linda Sue Park, New York Times Bestselling author of A Long Walk to Water “A gorgeous and emotional novel. I loved every page.” —Cynthia Kadohata, Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira

Around My World by Jason Thiessen Pdf

In life we are occasionally faced with detours. Some of them are thrust upon us just when we think we have life all figured out. Sometimes, however, they are self-created. We choose to take them, driven by some inner desire or passion. Author Jason Thiessens extraordinary adventure was just such a detourborne of the dreams of a young boy with only an atlas as his guide to an unseen world. Nearly thirty years after those dreams began, they became a reality. Thiessen, a man with a wife, a career, and a mortgage, set out on a journey of discovery to find purpose and meaning while attempting to answer lifelong questions. His detour from an otherwise traditional life path took him to South America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, India, Southeast Asia, and Australia, ultimately traveling twice the distance of the circumference of the earth. Just as his adventure brought him from the heights of the Andes to the depths of the Dead Sea, so too did Thiessen take an emotional journey from feelings of excitement, fulfillment, and joy to those of anger, frustration, and despair. Around My World: A Detour on Lifes Journey tells a story for anyone who is on their own journey to reconcile modern-day pressures and realities with the insights that world travel can bring to ones life.

" . . . extremely valuable . . . enthusiastically recommend[ed] . . . " —Western Folklore These hilarious and slightly off-color stories, although gathered in Indiana, reflect the ancient origin and universality of the joke. The chuckle, the grin, the uncontrolled belly-laugh evoked by Jokelore attest to the popularity of this ancient form of folk literature.

Alternation between L1 (Italian) and L2 (English) in Three CLIL and EMI Contexts by Francesca Costa Pdf

For years, the alternation between L1 and L2 was banned in language classes, since it was thought that this would impair the learning of the second language. In recent years, however, there has been a recognition of the validity of alternation. As such, this book investigates the alternation of the L1 and L2 in CLIL and EMI contexts at three educational levels (primary, secondary, and tertiary) in Italy. Using a mixed-methods research approach, it shows that alternation played a mainly lexical role to explain specific lexis or at least to provide the students with lexis in both languages (English and Italian). It highlights that lexis in CLIL and EMI contexts is indeed crucial for both content and language learning. The book also argues that, despite the contextual differences that exist, the three educational levels (primary, secondary, and tertiary) show a very similar use of alternation, thereby pointing at similarities more than differences.

Superlative by MATTHEW D. LAPLANTE Pdf

2019 Foreword Indie Silver Award Winner for Science Welcome to the biggest, fastest, deadliest science book you'll ever read. The world's largest land mammal could help us end cancer. The fastest bird is showing us how to solve a century-old engineering mystery. The oldest tree is giving us insights into climate change. The loudest whale is offering clues about the impact of solar storms. For a long time, scientists ignored superlative life forms as outliers. Increasingly, though, researchers are coming to see great value in studying plants and animals that exist on the outermost edges of the bell curve. As it turns out, there's a lot of value in paying close attention to the "oddballs" nature has to offer. Go for a swim with a ghost shark, the slowest-evolving creature known to humankind, which is teaching us new ways to think about immunity. Get to know the axolotl, which has the longest-known genome and may hold the secret to cellular regeneration. Learn about Monorhaphis chuni, the oldest discovered animal, which is providing insights into the connection between our terrestrial and aquatic worlds. Superlative is the story of extreme evolution, and what we can learn from it about ourselves, our planet, and the cosmos. It's a tale of crazy-fast cheetahs and super-strong beetles, of microbacteria and enormous plants, of whip-smart dolphins and killer snakes. This book will inspire you to change the way you think about the world and your relationship to everything in it.
