Mary Elizabeth Barber: Growing Wild by Alan Cohen,Tanja Hammel,Jasmin Rindlisbacher Pdf

Mary Elizabeth Barber (1818–1899), born in Britain, arrived in the Cape Colony in 1820 where she spent the rest of her life as a rolling stone, as she lived in and near Grahamstown, the diamond and gold fields, Pietermaritzburg, Malvern near Durban and on various farms in the eastern part of the Cape Colony. She has been perceived as ‘the most advanced woman of her time’, yet her legacy has attracted relatively little attention. She was the first woman ornithologist in South Africa, one of the first who propagated Darwin’s theory of evolution, an early archaeologist, keen botanist and interested lepidopterist. In her scientific writing, she propagated a new gender order; positioned herself as a feminist avant la lettre without relying on difference models and at the same time made use of genuinely racist argumentation. This is the first publication of her edited scientific correspondence. The letters – transcribed by Alan Cohen, who has written a number of biographical articles on Barber and her brothers – are primarily addressed to the entomologist Roland Trimen, the curator of the South African Museum in Cape Town. Today, the letters are housed at the Royal Entomological Society in St Albans. This book also includes a critical introduction by historian Tanja Hammel who has published a number of articles and published a monograph (2019) on Mary Elizabeth Barber.

Planting the Wild Garden by Kathryn O. Galbraith Pdf

Eloquent text and stunning illustrations combine to explore the many ways seeds are distributed, including animals, weather and wind, human action, and even the plants themselves. A farmer and her son carefully plant seeds in their garden. In the wild garden, many seeds are planted too, but not by farmers' hands. Different kinds of animals transport seeds, often without knowing it. Sometimes rain washes seeds away to a new location. And sometimes something extraordinary occurs, like when the pods of Scotch broom burst open explosively in the summer heat, scattering seeds everywhere like popcorn. Kathryn Galbraith's lyrical prose seamlessly combines with Wendy Halperin's elegant, crisp illustrations to show how many elements work together through the seasons to create and sustain the wild meadow garden.

The Humane Gardener by Nancy Lawson Pdf

In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Growing Wild by Kathryn Vigness Pdf

When life pulls you to rock bottom, grow higher in your purpose... A thriving career, happy marriage, and balanced, well-rounded children. Picturesque. Social media-worthy. But what few knew is that by her twenties, Kathryn Vigness had already lived a life full of pain and heartache. At age 15, she had survived a tragic car accident in rural Minnesota, flying through the windshield of her high school sweetheart's car and sustaining life-threatening injuries that left her not only physically, but spiritually, shattered. After the accident, a startling secret sends Kathryn on a decade-long journey for validation. Growing Wild follows Kathryn's life from the farm, as a heartbroken girl longing for answers and certainty, to adulthood where she seeks external acceptance and her "happily ever after." In her quest for identity, she shapeshifts through roles as the fixer, the grad student, the professional, the wife, the mother, the philanthropist, and the caregiver. Checking all the boxes and doing all the right things to create her perfect life, Kathryn realizes she still isn't "there"--which brings her to confront her deepest fear: that she'll never be enough. By growing beyond the white picket fence and returning to her roots, Kathryn is able to forgive herself for her past and finally finds a solstice in unbecoming everything she told herself she had to be--and helping others do the same.
