Homes for Our Time. Contemporary Houses Around the World by Philip Jodidio Pdf

Across small cottages and lavish villas, beach houses and forest refuges, discover the world's finest crop of new homes. This cutting-edge global digest features such talents as Shigeru Ban, MVRDV, and Marcio Kogan alongside up-and-coming names like Aires Mateus, Xu Fu-Min, Vo Trong Nghia, Desai Chia, and Shunri Nishizawa. Here, there are homes in Australia and New Zealand, from China and Vietnam, in the United States and Mexico, and on to less expected places like Ecuador and Costa Rica. The result is a sweeping survey of the contemporary house and a revelation that homes across the globe may have more in common than expected. Among guava trees and abandoned forts in Western India is a sanctuary designed for and by Kamal Malik of Malik Architecture. The House of Three Streams is a sprawling spectacle with high ceilings, verandas, and pavilions, perched atop a ridge overlooking two ravines. A medley of steel, glass, wood, and stone, the house weaves along the contour of the landscape, almost as an extension of the forest. Encina House by Aranguren & Gallegos, an elegant, sloping structure reminiscent of a gazebo, similarly inhabits its surrounding vista. Ensconced in a pine forest north of Madrid, the lower level is embedded in rock and connected to the upper by a natural stone wall. Shinichi Ogawa's Seaside House is an immaculate two-story minimalist marvel in Kanagawa that overlooks the Pacific. Its living area spills onto a cantilevered terrace and infinity pool, almost dissolving into the ocean as one seamless entity. In Vietnam, Shunri Nishizawa's House in Chau Doc exudes tropical sophistication with exposed timber beams, woven bamboo, plants, concrete panels, and inner balconies and terraces. Its corrugated iron panels act as moveable walls and shutters, ushering in views of surrounding rice fields. These homes--along with more than 50 others--are each remarkably distinct in design. They all, however, toe the line between inside and outside, each one symbiotic with its surroundings.

There is no hotter style today than the cooler than cool work of modern designers and architects from the 1940s and 50s. Endlessly inventive and emminently livable, mid-century modernism has an optimism and confidence born of postwar abundance, and a spirited elegance that appeals powerfully fifty years later. In CLASSIC MODERN, design expert Deborah Dietsch introduces readers to the basic tenets of modern design and explains how the simple yet inspired forms typical of this style were so readily disseminated into mainstream American culture. Filled throughout with enticing examples of mid-century pieces from such timeless designers as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Arne Jacobsen, and George Nelson, this beautiful book recaptures the excitement of the period's brilliant designs.

Retreat by Ron Broadhurst Pdf

The most forward-looking spaces designed for rustic living in the twenty-first century. Across the globe, architects are creating innovative houses for country living, reimagining the way we escape into the natural world. Some combine industrial materials like metal and concrete with traditional wood. Others create sophisticated essays in off-grid living, employing the most technologically ambitious green-living strategies. Still others place discreet structures on remote, almost-unbuildable locations. This unique volume profiles new and recent projects that illustrate the inexhaustible potential of the modern house to enter into a dialogue with nature in sustainable yet stylish ways. The collection spans the globe, from the Pacific Northwest to the forests of Japan. Today’s architectural vanguard is represented, as well as established architects working at the forefront of twenty-first-century design, including Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Rick Joy, Olson Kundig, and Marcio Kogan. These rustic retreats—with comfortable and appealing modern interiors—will resonate with readers of shelter magazines, while the cutting-edge reputations of their architects will interest professionals and students.

Sustainable by Avi Friedman Pdf

A presentation of contemporary houses that demonstrates how domesticity can be beautiful and still help the planet. Have we passed a tipping point beyond which we can no longer reverse a course of action that was charted several decades ago Sustainable: Houses with Small Footprints argues that we can indeed detach our dwellings from a dependence on many external systems and resources and adopt other building practices. What is known as living off the grid is possible, and Sustainable presents forty-five houses that demonstrate how architects have implemented sustainable design concepts around the world. These projects show us what time-tested vernacular design principles—including local materials, natural ventilation strategies, and earth shelter construction—can teach us, as well as how the latest cutting-edge technologies—such as indoor farming and "living walls" made of plant material—can make truly sustainable design possible. The variety and ingenuity of the projects featured here make Sustainable a uniquely coherent and authoritative volume on sustainable residential design.

The New 100 Houses X 100 Architects by Robyn Beaver Pdf

Collection of 100 contemporary designer homes by 100 individual architects from around the world. Both an object of beauty itself and valuable source of inspiration. 'The New 100 Houses x 100 Architects' is a celebration of diversity. Satisfying our natural and abiding curiosity about how other people live, and our endless quest to improve our own homes, this superb volume showcases architectural trends, provides insight into vernacular residential architecture, and is a rich source of ideas for every house designer- professional or armchair. Many of the houses portrayed in this book turn conventional notions of appearance and design upside down in their quest for perfection, while many reflect the emerging trend toward sustainable design while proving energy efficiency and style are not mutually exclusive concepts. The 100 houses featured, (designed by 100 different architects) range from deceptively simple to over-the-top gorgeous. Among the awe-inspiring projects in this book are contemporary houses slotted into traditional settings, such as a modern project on a cobbled street in Ljubljana, Slovenia; a utilitarian structure nestled in a vineyard in pastoral New Zealand; a concrete polyhedron incised into a minuscule spot in the Tokyo metropolis; and a house on the Indian Ocean in Mozambique, whose colours contrast against the azure blues of sea and sky. AUTHOR: Robyn Beaver has previously edited '21st Century Houses, 150 of the World's Best Houses, 100 of the World's Best Houses' and 'Another 100 of the World's Best Houses'. 691 col., 150 b/w
