The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch Pdf

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, a professor shares the lessons he's learned—about living in the present, building a legacy, and taking full advantage of the time you have—in this life-changing classic. "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." —Randy Pausch A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull over the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave—"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"—wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have . . . and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

The Emperor Tea Garden by Nazli Eray Pdf

In Eray’s world of fantasy and fun, there are few boundaries between reality and imagination. There is a roadside tea garden where spirits gather by night to carry on flirtations until they fade into the dawn, and there is a tavern in Bartin where men make their lost illusions of love come alive by thinking of them. The narrator exchanges places with Night for twenty-four hours to find out what it means to be the unsleeping Night, the guardian of dreams. The slot machines in a casino provide love advice and clues to the multiple realities of romance, history, and everyday life. A mixture of drama and fable, confession and memoir, the fabulous and the prosaic, The Emperor Tea Garden is a place where you have never been and always are. As you turn each page of Eray’s work, you are in a different world, sometimes several at the same time.

The Mathematician by Jacob E. Goodman Pdf

Professor Claus Eisenstadt, a refugee from Nazi Germany, and a brilliant mathematician, disappears from Columbia University one day. After the police have given up the search, mathematics graduate student Judy Carter, compelled to solve puzzling problems—both in science and in real life—becomes intrigued with his sudden disappearance. As she tries to learn more about the whereabouts and welfare of the professor, Judy begins to suspect his unexpected absence may have something to do with his earlier days in Germany. Judy follows up on some of her theories about Professor Eisenstadt’s mysterious disappearance, but she is forced to give up without a solution. Years later, Judy has herself become a professor. While on sabbatical in Germany, she decides to look further into Eisenstadt’s disappearance, and begins to understand more about him, but is unable to find the answer to the puzzle of his vanishing. When Judy returns home to the US, she finds a thick envelope waiting for her, which contains an unusual request. She is surprised to find that it concerns Eisenstadt. Could this unexpected package be the link that helps Judy finally learn what happened to Claus and why he vanished? As the story unfolds, the novel travels between student days in prewar Germany and postwar America, which were impacted by prewar anti-Semitism and postwar guilt. The reader is allowed a glimpse into the work of scientific researchers and the interplay of that work with their personal lives.

Confederate Nation by Michael Loyd Gray Pdf

Buy this book! What, you expected sterling praise from famous writers? Sorry, I can't provide that because I am forced to publish Confederate Nation myself. Besides, I suspect that many of those testimonials are just favors from friends who may not have even read the book. And you never see a bad one, right? Let's face it, the so-called mainstream publishing industry has become constipated and reluctant to do much more than recycle the gorp of mediocre but established writers. It is mostly unwilling to take a chance and discover new and exciting writers. So, I am taking matters in my own hands and getting Confederate Nation in front of readers. Life is too short to wait for a break. I'm going to try and make it happen now. Is this a great book? Probably not. There are very few great books published any more. But is it entertaining? Yes. Does it tell an odd story? Certainly. And I have always thought it should be a movie, too. With proper padding and makeup, Kurt Russell could again be Elvis. A man is ultimately his own father because he keeps growing, if he's lucky, and as he grows he's the only person there every damn day to help get past the rough spots. We become our own fathers, and we should, and we must raise ourselves, even when a biological father has been there, but even more so when one has not. In the end we are solitary creatures. We're alone. The smart ones will make alliances and coalitions with others to make the trip sweeter and kinder, but it's a long and solitary trip and in the end the partners we make can't get us across the last barrier. That we have to do for ourselves. -Michael Loyd Gray
