Kill the Silence by Monika Korra Pdf

In 2009, college sophomore and track star Monika Kørra was grabbed by three men on her way home from a party and brutally raped. Within hours of being released, Monika resolved that she would not be a victim – she was going to be a survivor. Monika had traveled from her home in Norway to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, determined to acclimate to life in the States and excited for the opportunity of a full scholarship to do what she loved. As an athlete and Olympic hopeful, Monika already knew how to train against extreme fatigue, soreness, and distraction. She was used to overcoming adversity, using obstacles like stepping stones to achieve her goals. Persistence and patience had always been her greatest tools. She would now have to use these same qualities to regain her self-identity and find a “new normal”. Stripped of her sense of security, she slowly rebuilds her life with the help of her friends, family, and her own unflappable spirit. Monika shares the inspiring combination of mental and physical work that gave her the strength to win her greatest fight yet: the court case against the three men who had attacked her. She testifies against them with confidence and a fierce determination that these men would never be able to hurt anyone else, securing a life sentence. Two of them received life, one with parole and one without parole for the worst of the three. A large percentage of sexual assaults – upwards of 80% for female college students, like Monika was – go unreported, and 15 of every 16 rapists go free. By sharing her story, Monika hopes to inspire others to come forward and tell their own stories without shame or fear. Kill the Silence is about one woman's journey to recover from trauma and a call to arms to break the stigma that surrounds violence against women.

Living With The Boomers by Herbert Mahrdt Korra Pdf

What is a Lhasa Apso? The breed came to the United States during the 1930‛s. Several different American visitors to Tibet fell in love with the terrier breed named for their place of origin. Lhasa, the capital of Tibet was the major city for the Tibetan breed. The city of Lhasa was a center for the religion of the area – Buddhism. The monks each adopted a terrier type dog and the name of the city was soon attached to this breed. Thus the name Lhasa Apso came into being. Lhasa‛s are a small dog averaging 17 lbs and tend to live long lives. 20 year life spans are not unusual. They have beautiful fl owing coats which require much brushing and cleaning. The long hair helped to protect the Lhasa‛s in the severe winter of the Himalayas. Lhasa‛s make good companion dogs. They seem to understand their heritage and are a proud dog. Fiercely loyal to their masters as well. Their keen sense of hearing make them an excellent Watch Dog. They like to play and generally enjoy younger children. Sometimes Lhasa‛s can be a bit mischievous. On occasion when the Lhasa goes too far, it is best to talk in a gentle way to correct his error. When you swat him with a newspaper, he will tend to fi ght back. I discovered this early in my relationship with Boomer.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and Philosophy by Helen De Cruz,Johan De Smedt Pdf

Would our world be a better place if some of us were benders? Can Katara repair the world through care? Is Toph a disability pride icon? What does it mean for Zuko to be bad at being good? Can we tell whether uncle Iroh is a fool or a sage? The world is out of sorts. The four nations, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air, are imbalanced because of the unrelenting conquest of the Fire Nation. The only one who can restore balance to the world is the Avatar. On the face of it, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a story about a lone superhero. However, saving the world is a team effort, embodied in Team Avatar, aka the Gaang. Aang needs help from his friends and tutors, even from non-human animals. Through the teachings of Guru Pathik and Huu he comes to realize that though the world and its nations seem separate, we are all one people. We all have the same roots and we are all branches of the same tree. Avatar: The Last Airbender and Philosophy brings to the fore the Eastern, Western, and Indigenous philosophies that are implicit in the show. Following Uncle Iroh’s advice that it is important to draw wisdom from many traditions, this volume features contributions by experts on Buddhist, Daoist, Confucian, and Indigenous schools of thought, next to focusing on Western classical authors such as Plotinus, Kant, and Merleau-Ponty. The volume is also unique in drawing on less common traditions such as black abolitionism, anarchism, and the philosophy of martial arts. Intertwining experience and reflection, ATLA and Philosophy helps readers to deeply engage with today’s burning questions, such as how to deal with ecological destruction, the aftermath of colonialism and genocide, and wealth inequality, using the tools from a wide range of philosophical traditions.
