The Lost Tombs of Saqqara by Alain-Pierre Zivie Pdf

"Located south of Cairo, Saqqara, the principal necropolis of Memphis, is a privileged site in Egyptian history. There, Egyptian and foreign Egyptologists have made many discoveries, in particular French archaeologists: Auguste Mariette, Gaston Maspero, and Victor Loret in the past, Jean-Philippe Lauer, who passed away at the dawn of his one hundredth year (2001), and in these last decades, Jean Leclant, founder of the French Archaeological Mission of Saqqara." "In this distinguished line of egyptologists, Alain Zivie and his team of the French Archaeological Mission of the Bubasteion have spent the last twenty-five years examining, from the sands of Saqqara, a major New Kingdom cemetery that was later transformed into catacombs of cats. They have brought to light the tomb of the vizier 'Aper-El, with its burial treasure, and those of the painter Thothmes, of Maia, the foster mother of Tutankhamun, of an ambassador of Ramesses II, of the scribe of the Aten treasury in Memphis, and of others, as well." "Presenting the archaeological, historical, and artistic consequences of these investigations and these discoveries, the egyptologist here takes an approach that is sensitive to an authentic scientific adventure. To do this, he also uses and comments on a long series of beautiful photographs by Patrick Chapuis, in which we discover the works and the days, as well as the joys, of an entire team."--BOOK JACKET.

Lost Tombs by Manniche Pdf

First published in 1988. The Theban private tombs form a major source for our knowledge of Egyptian society. Ostensibly a great amount of work has been done in the necropolis over the past one hundred and sixty years of its modern history, and the bibliography for this area is among the most extensive in Egyptology. Many of the 415 or so decorated tombs have received a full publication, but for a great number only selected scenes have been made available, and a surprising amount remains to all intents and purposes unpublished. The present study is concerned with a number of painted tombs of the Eighteenth dynasty which were visited by the early travellers, but the exact location of which is now unknown. The careful drawings and tracings made by these pioneers are apparently all that remains to show the appearance of these tombs. Some of the scenes represented are not found elsewhere in the necropolis, and others have special points of interest or unique details, linguistic, iconographic and religious, to offer. This very important material has not previously been used by scholars, and it has not been recognized that fragments of some of these vanished tombs can actually be traced to collections in museums and elsewhere.

Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt by Chris Naunton Pdf

An exciting archeological exploration of ancient Egypt that examines the potential for discovering the remaining “lost” tombs of the pharaohs. Tombs, mummies, and funerary items make up a significant portion of the archeological remains that survive ancient Egypt and have come to define the popular perception of Egyptology. Despite the many sensational discoveries in the last century, such as the tomb of Tutankhamun, the tombs of some of the most famous individuals in the ancient world—Imhotep, Nefertiti, Alexander the Great, and Cleopatra—have not yet been found. Archeologist Chris Naunton examines the famous pharaohs, their achievements, the bling they might have been buried with, the circumstances in which they were buried, and why those circumstances may have prevented archeologists from finding these tombs. In Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt, Naunton sheds light on the lives of these ancient Egyptians and makes an exciting case for the potential discovery of these lost tombs.

City of the Dead by Lise Manniche Pdf

The Theban necropolis lies in strange contrast to the bustle of Luxor on the opposite bank of the Nile. Over 450 tombs spanning more than a thousand years, some fully excavated and recorded, others tantalisingly described by travellers but now lost, form a maze-like network of passages and caves. The decoration of many of the tombs, particularly those of the Eighteenth dynasty, provides some outstanding examples of ancient Egyptian painting and relief work and reveals fascinating details about the lives and beliefs of their owners. Some of the tombs were re-used and display contrasting styles of workmanship, while many were colonised in more recent centuries by peoples with scant respect for the tombs of their ancestors: many well-paintings are blackened and burnt beyond redemption. The author traces the history of the site discussing the more important tombs in some detail, and sheds new light on the symbolism used in painting to help the deceased in the Afterlife. She also surveys the role of the treasure hunters and travellers of the eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries and the pioneer epigraphers who followed them and paved the way for the archeological investigation and research that continues today.

Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis by Elena Pischikova Pdf

The third volume of reports on the excavations of noblemen’s tombs from the Kushite Period This is the third and final volume in the Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis series dedicated to the ongoing work of the Egyptian–American South Asasif Conservation Project, under the auspices of the Ministry of Antiquities and directed by Elena Pischikova. The project was founded in 2006 to restore and reconstruct the early Kushite tombs of Karabasken (TT 391) and Karakhamun (TT 223) and the Saite tomb of Irtieru (TT 390). Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis: Art and Archaeology 2015–2018 focuses on the conservation work in the tomb of Karakhamun and new discoveries in the tomb of Karabasken, which include the burial chamber of Karabasken, its monumental granite sarcophagus found in situ, and the Twenty-sixth Dynasty chapel and burial compartment of Padibastet built in the pillared hall of the tomb of Karabasken. Discussion of finds includes canopic jars, stelae, pottery, and animal bones among many others. Life Histories of Theban Tombs by Andrea Loprieno-Gnirs Pdf

A thorough transdisciplinary archaeological study of the ancient Egyptian Theban rock-cut tombs at Sheikh ‘Abd al-Qurna In recent years, archeological research has undergone major changes. The material turn in archaeology and related disciplines prompted the adoption of sophisticated scientific, digital, and technical approaches and methods often conducted on a micro level, enhancing our understanding of depositional processes and of the creation and life of an archeological object. This volume reflects seven seasons of transdisciplinary archaeological research at a cluster of rock-cut tombs in Sheikh 'Abd al-Qurna, an ancient Egyptian hillside cemetery and part of the much larger Theban Necropolis. Organized in twelve main chapters, Life Histories of Theban Tombs presents current investigations in landscape archaeology (including recent excavations at a large debris hill previously covering a tomb), geo- and bioarcheology, the archaeology of tomb construction, burial practices, and domestic uses as well as various epigraphical, visual, and material studies. The last two sections provide additional insight into the applied recording, surveying, and visualization methods and techniques and the database system used for data recording and organization. Faces of Pharaohs by Robert B. Partridge Pdf

At the end of the 19th century, two tombs were discovered at Luxor which contained the mummies of some of Egypt's greatest Pharaohs and members of their families and courts. Their original tombs had been plundered, but the bodies, stripped of jewellery and funerary goods, somehow survived. More than 40 mummies were found, dating from the 17th Dynasty to the 21st (580 BC to 940 BC). of Ahmose, Thutmose III, Amenhotep II and III, Seti I, Rameses II and III, and Meneptah - the mortal remains of kings who ruled at the height of Egypt's power and opulence. All had been presumed lost when their tombs were robbed, but the mummies had been repaired, re-wrapped, and in some cases placed in new coffins and moved by priests to a more secure site, where they were to remain hidden for over 3000 years. coffins found in these two royal caches and other royal burials, which include Yuya and Thuya and Tutankhamun. Much new work has been done on the royal mummies over the last 20 years, and whilst many questions have been answered many still remain, particularly over the identification of some of them. The book incorporates recent information and ideas about this unique collection. tombs.
