Poison and Poultice by Kristin Jacques Pdf

Taking readers further into The Gate Cycle, Kristin Jacques will thrill fans of Brandon Sanderson's MISTBORN and Leigh Bardugo's SHADOW AND BONE. Every magic has a flavor, from the cold, cloying sweetness of the Winnowrooks to the hinted rot and bitter earth of the Mire witches. To know the flavor of one’s magic is to know the poison that will control it. Oswin Brixby is a traveling Meister, accompanied by his dearest childhood friend and helpmate, Lia. Trained in the subtle magics mastered by the people of the Hooded Wood, his extensive knowledge of the natural and unnatural worlds gives him a free pass to the journeyman road—the one and only protected path between the varying territories, Above and Below. Brixby believes he is content in his wandering trade, though in his heart of hearts, he wonders what his true purpose should be. Despite this nagging doubt, there has never been a reason to change or deviate from the known. That is, until Lia stumbles onto two foundlings in the pitch-black depths Below: a boy and a girl whose magic tastes of something far too dangerous for them to be left alive. hr The Gate Cycle Series in order 1. A Handbook of Biblical Reception in Jewish, European Christian, and Islamic Folklores by Eric Ziolkowski Pdf

This first volume of a two-volume Handbook treats a challenging, largely neglected subject at the crossroads of several academic fields: biblical studies, reception history of the Bible, and folklore studies or folkloristics. The Handbook examines the reception of the Bible in verbal folklores of different cultures around the globe. This first volume, complete with a general Introduction, focuses on biblically-derived characters, tales, motifs, and other elements in Jewish (Mizrahi, Sephardi, Ashkenazi), Romance (French, Romanian), German, Nordic/Scandinavian, British, Irish, Slavic (East, West, South), and Islamic folkloric traditions. The volume contributes to the understanding of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, the New Testament, and various pseudepigraphic and apocryphal scriptures, and to their interpretation and elaboration by folk commentators of different faiths. The book also illuminates the development, artistry, and “migration” of folktales; opens new areas for investigation in the reception history of the Bible; and offers insights into the popular dimensions of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities around the globe, especially regarding how the holy scriptures have informed those communities’ popular imaginations.

Jane Grigson's Vegetable Book by Jane Grigson Pdf

In Jane Grigson's Vegetable Book American readers, gardeners, and food lovers will find everything they've always wanted to know about the history and romance of seventy-five different vegetables, from artichokes to yams, and will learn how to use them in hundreds of different recipes, from the exquisitely simple ?Broccoli Salad? to the engagingly esoteric ?Game with Tomato and Chocolate Sauce.? Jane Grigson gives basic preparation and cooking instructions for all the vegetables discussed and recipes for eating them in every style from least adulterated to most adorned. This is by no means a book intended for vegetarians alone, however. There are recipes for ?Cassoulet,? ?Chicken Gumbo,? and even Dr. William Kitchiner's 1817 version of ?Bubble and Squeak? (fried beef and cabbage). ø Jane Grigson's Vegetable Book is a joy to read and a pleasure to use in the kitchen. It will introduce you to vegetables you've never met before, develop your friendship with those you know only in passing, and renew your romance with some you've come to take for granted. ø This edition has a special introduction for American readers, tables of equivalent weights and measures, and a glossary, which make the book as accessible to Americans as it is to those in Grigson's native England.

How to Kill a Dragon by Calvert Watkins Pdf

In How to Kill a Dragon Calvert Watkins follows the continuum of poetic formulae in Indo-European languages, from Old Hittite to medieval Irish. He uses the comparative method to reconstruct traditional poetic formulae of considerable complexity that stretch as far back as the original common language. Thus, Watkins reveals the antiquity and tenacity of the Indo-European poetic tradition. Watkins begins this study with an introduction to the field of comparative Indo-European poetics; he explores the Saussurian notions of synchrony and diachrony, and locates the various Indo-European traditions and ideologies of the spoken word. Further, his overview presents case studies on the forms of verbal art, with selected texts drawn from Indic, Iranian, Greek, Latin, Hittite, Armenian, Celtic, and Germanic languages. In the remainder of the book, Watkins examines in detail the structure of the dragon/serpent-slaying myths, which recur in various guises throughout the Indo-European poetic tradition. He finds the "signature" formula for the myth--the divine hero who slays the serpent or overcomes adversaries--occurs in the same linguistic form in a wide range of sources and over millennia, including Old and Middle Iranian holy books, Greek epic, Celtic and Germanic sagas, down to Armenian oral folk epic of the last century. Watkins argues that this formula is the vehicle for the central theme of a proto-text, and a central part of the symbolic culture of speakers of the Proto-Indo-European language: the relation of humans to their universe, the values and expectations of their society. Therefore, he further argues, poetry was a social necessity for Indo- European society, where the poet could confer on patrons what they and their culture valued above all else: "imperishable fame."

Anthropology and the Classics by Gilbert Murray,Andrew Lang,W. Warde Fowler,F. B. Jevons,John Linton Sir Myres,Arthur Sir Evans Pdf

This work is a valuable contribution to the subject of picture-writing. Anthropology and the Humanities might seem coextensive, yet they divide the domain of human culture among them in practice. The types of human culture are reducible to two, a simpler and a more complicated, or a lower and a higher. By set convention, Anthropology occupies itself solely with the simpler or lower kind of culture. On the other hand, the Humanities focus on whatever is most integral and typical of the higher life of society. Six influential personalities delivered these six lectures during the Michaelmas Term of 1908 at the Committee for Anthropology, which from the beginning of its career has kept steadily in view the need of persuading classical scholars to examine the lower culture as it bears upon the higher. Contents: The European Diffusion of Primitive Pictography and its Bearings on the Origin of Script by A. J. Evans Homer and Anthropology. by A. Lang The Early Greek Epic. By G. G. A. Murray Graeco-Italian Magic. By F. B. Jevons Herodotus and Anthropology. By J. L. Myres Lustratio. By W. W. Fowler
