The Random Factor by Prof. Mark Robert Rank Pdf

Upending notions of predictability and rugged individualism to reveal how truly random the world is. It’s comforting to think that we can be successful because we work hard, climb ladders, and get what we deserve, but each of us has been profoundly touched by randomness. Chance is shown to play a crucial role in shaping outcomes across history, throughout the natural world, and in our everyday lives. In The Random Factor, Mark Robert Rank draws from a wealth of evidence, including interviews and research, to explain how luck and chance play out and reveals how we can use these lessons to guide our personal lives and public policies. The Random Factor traverses luck from macro to micro, from events like the Cuban Missile Crisis to our personal encounters and relationships. From his perspective as a scholar of poverty, Rank also delves into the class and race dynamics of chance, emphasizing the stark disparities it brings to light. This transformative book prompts a new understanding of the twists and turns in our daily lives and encourages readers to fully appreciate the surprising world of randomness in which we live.

The Random Factor by Mark Robert Rank Pdf

"Luck, chance, and randomness are topics that virtually everyone can relate to and that each of us have been affected by. The Random Factor explores these subjects using a vast array of evidence, fresh insights, and compelling stories based upon the author's long standing research. The range of subjects and scholarship is far reaching and compelling. From history, to the natural world, to our everyday lives, chance is shown to play an important role in shaping various outcomes. Just as important, The Random Factor details the dynamics that determine the ways that luck and chance play themselves out, and it reveals the lessons to be learned in terms of guiding our personal lives and social policies. Mark Robert Rank leads his readers on a fascinating journey across the shifting sands of chance and luck. It is a journey that will change the way we fundamentally understand the world we live in and the manner in which our lives unfold"--

Statistical Analysis of fMRI Data by F. Gregory Ashby Pdf

An overview of statistical methods for analyzing data from fMRI experiments. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which allows researchers to observe neural activity in the human brain noninvasively, has revolutionized the scientific study of the mind. An fMRI experiment produces massive amounts of highly complex data; researchers face significant challenges in analyzing the data they collect. This book offers an overview of the most widely used statistical methods of analyzing fMRI data. Every step is covered, from preprocessing to advanced methods for assessing functional connectivity. The goal is not to describe which buttons to push in the popular software packages but to help readers understand the basic underlying logic, the assumptions, the strengths and weaknesses, and the appropriateness of each method. The book covers all of the important current topics in fMRI data analysis, including the relation of the fMRI BOLD (blood oxygen-level dependent) response to neural activation; basic analyses done in virtually every fMRI article—preprocessing, constructing statistical parametrical maps using the general linear model, solving the multiple comparison problem, and group analyses; the most popular methods for assessing functional connectivity—coherence analysis and Granger causality; two widely used multivariate approaches, principal components analysis and independent component analysis; and a brief survey of other current fMRI methods. The necessary mathematics is explained at a conceptual level, but in enough detail to allow mathematically sophisticated readers to gain more than a purely conceptual understanding. The book also includes short examples of Matlab code that implement many of the methods described; an appendix offers an introduction to basic Matlab matrix algebra commands (as well as a tutorial on matrix algebra). A second appendix introduces multivariate probability distributions.

Analyzing Sensory Data with R by Sebastien Le,Thierry Worch Pdf

Choose the Proper Statistical Method for Your Sensory Data Issue Analyzing Sensory Data with R gives you the foundation to analyze and interpret sensory data. The book helps you find the most appropriate statistical method to tackle your sensory data issue. Covering quantitative, qualitative, and affective approaches, the book presents the big picture of sensory evaluation. Through an integrated approach that connects the different dimensions of sensory evaluation, you’ll understand: The reasons why sensory data are collected The ways in which the data are collected and analyzed The intrinsic meaning of the data The interpretation of the data analysis results Each chapter corresponds to one main sensory topic. The chapters start with presenting the nature of the sensory evaluation and its objectives, the sensory particularities related to the sensory evaluation, details about the data set obtained, and the statistical analyses required. Using real examples, the authors then illustrate step by step how the analyses are performed in R. The chapters conclude with variants and extensions of the methods that are related to the sensory task itself, the statistical methodology, or both.

Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers by Douglas C. Montgomery,George C. Runger Pdf

This text brings statistical tools to engineers and scientists who design and develop new products, new manufacturing systems and processes and who improve existing systems. Written by engineers for engineers, the examples and exercises are engineering-based, containing real data. And because computers are used to apply statistical methods to solve problems, output is presented from Statgraphics and SAS to illustrate what can be done with modern statistical software. Readers will master discrete and continuous random variables and probability distributions; point and interval estimation; testing hypotheses; simple and multiple linear regression; design of experiments; nonparametric statistics; and statistical quality control.
