From flat-topped acacia trees to great migrations of wildebeest across an edgeless expanse of grass, the Serengeti is one of the world's most renowned ecosystems. And at the apex of this incredible landscape prowls its seemingly indomitable ruler: the Serengeti lion. These majestic mammals are skillful hunters, iconic, and integral to Serengeti health. But they also commit infanticide; eat local people and destroy local livelihoods; are a source of profit for those who make money shooting or conserving them (and sometimes both); and are in constant danger from the encroachments of another species: humans. With Lions in the Balance, celebrated lion researcher and conservationist Craig Packer takes us back into the complex, tooth-and-claw worlds of lion conservation and behavior. A sequel to Packer'sInto Africa—which gave many readers their first experience of field work in Africa, of Tanzanian roads, of long hours spent identifying lions by their ear marks and scars, and of the joys of bootlegged Grateful Dead tapes beneath savannah moons—this diary-based chronicle of adventure, real-life danger, and corruption will both alarm and entertain. Packer's story offers a look into the future of the lion, one in which the politics of conservation will require survival strategies far more creative and powerful than any now possessed by the citizens of the savannah—humans included. Packer is sure to infuriate poachers, politicians, and conservationists alike as he minces no words about the problems he sees. But with a narrative stretching from Arusha to Washington, DC, and marked by Packer's signature humor and incredible candor,Lions in the Balance is a tale of courage against impossible odds, a masterly blend of science and storytelling, and an urgent call to action that will captivate a pride of readers.

Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language by Susan D. Duncan,Justine Cassell,Elena T. Levy Pdf
Each of the 21 chapters in this volume reflects a view of language as a dynamic phenomenon with emergent structure, and in each, gesture is approached as part of language, not an adjunct to it. In this, all of the authors have been influenced by David McNeill's methods for studying natural discourse and by his theory of the human capacity for language. The introductory chapter by Adam Kendon contextualizes McNeill’s research paradigm within a history of earlier gesture studies. Chapters in the first section, Language and Cognition, emphasize what McNeill refers to as the intrapersonal plane. Many of the chapters adduce evidence for McNeill's claim that gestures can serve as a window onto the speaker's mind. Chapters in the second section, Environmental Context and Sociality, emphasize the interpersonal plane and exemplify McNeill's focus on how moment-to-moment language use is determined by contextual factors. The final section of the volume, Atypical Minds and Bodies, concerns lessons to be learned from studies of aphasic patients, autistic children, and artificial humans.
The sorceress of psychological suspense is back with the sixth book in her highly-anticipated new Nowhere USA series. Ninie Hammon is at her career-best in Blown Away — a story that keeps you guessing even as the secrets are revealed. Viola Tackett's oldest son plays a childish game with disastrous results. What might have remained a personal tragedy, blossoms into a town-wide catastrophe when he lies to his mother about what happened. Now Viola Tackett is hatching a diabolical plot to get revenge. Her plan endangers the life of every man, woman, and child in Nowhere County. Meanwhile, the Reverend Duncan Norman believes he's figured out who murdered his daughter from the clues in her diary, and he has no plans to turn the other cheek. When he goes in search of an eye for an eye, he's not willing to hear that he might have the wrong guy. As the residents of Nowhere County squabble among themselves and kill each other, The Jabberwock keeps on silently picking them off one by one. Time is running out for everyone. ★★★★★ "I don’t know how she does it, but each book in this Nowhere County series just gets better and better." -- Bonsterblack ★★★★★ "If you’ve been enjoying this roller coaster ride with us, the best (in my opinion) is waiting for you with Blown Away, Book 6 of the Nowhere series. If you haven’t been reading Ninie Hammon’s incredible journey through the Middle of Nowhere, why not? You are missing one of the best major thrillers ever written." -- Kate Hickey ★★★★★ "This is the 6th in a series of 7 novels about an incredible, unexplainable, maddening, murderous event that is taking place in a town called Nowhere. How in the wide world of sports is this going to end? I was expecting the 6th book to tie up some loose ends, and it only (delightfully) added more frayed ones. I love Ninie's writing because I'm on the edge of my seat for most of her books. Oh, and WAIT until you read the "rock climbing" section...I don't think I took a breath during the whole chapter!" -- K. Koch ★★★★★ "I am completely BLOWN AWAY by this addition to the Nowhere, USA series. Oh. My. Goodness. This has been brain-cramping from the start: I think I referred to it in an earlier review as the love child of Lost and The Twilight Zone. If that's true, then it's cousin must be Alice in Wonderland because things just keep getting "curiouser and curiouser."" -- Kentucky Bohemian Blown Away is the sixth book in Ninie Hammon's new series, Nowhere USA, a riveting psychological thriller about the residents of a forgotten county that inexplicably sinks through reality to find itself in the middle of Nowhere. Fans of Justified, Under The Dome, and LOST will find themselves right at home in Nowhere USA.
