Suicide and Self-Harm in Prisons and Jails by Christine Tartaro,David Lester Pdf
This book explores how the stress associated with arrest, sentencing, and incarcerated life can contribute to the onset of a suicidal crisis even among those who never before experienced suicidal ideation or self-harmed. Christine Tartaro discusses the screening, monitoring, treatment, prevention programs and litigation associated with suicide in correctional facilities.
Until recently, it has been assumed that suicide, although a problem for jail inmates as they face the initial crisis of incarceration, is not a significant problem for inmates who advance to prison to serve out their sentences. This monograph was produced to fill a critical void in the knowledge base about prison suicide. In addition to a through review of the literature and of national and state standards for prevention, it offers the most recent national data on the incidence and rate of prison suicide, effective prevention programs, and discussion of liability issues. No study has been produced or written to explicate why such deaths have occurred in Mississippi's jails. Most of the deaths have been labeled suicide, but further research by the author has led to other explanations that these deaths were not all suicide. Many of the victims were African American, male, young and with no previous history of arrests. Within 24 hours of being incarcerated, many of these pre-trial detainees were found hanged in their jail cells with larynx and muscles missing, tongue cut out and body covered with bruises.
