This book does not spend time or money creating the “perfect” 356, and does not necessarily search for NOS (new old stock) replacement panels if a reproduction panel or patch is appropriate; but the book strives to give you a restoration that will be correct, admired and driven. This second edition provides more detail and contains additional comments to assist those restoring a 356 which was purchased disassembled. This second edition follows the restoration of a 1957 sunroof coupe from the time of purchase to the first drive. When the Porsche 912 was introduced in the spring of 1965, some members of the staff were not quite happy with the new model, for it still had the four-cylinder engine of the 356 that was no longer in production, while the 911 already had the new six-cylinder, and had become a legend. However, the 911 was so expensive that many Porsche devotees in Germany could not, or did not want to, afford to buy it. For this reason, Porsche quickly needed a new, less expensive model so the 912 came into being, and from 1966 to 1969 about 32,000 vehicles were built. Apart from the Porsche 912 Coup� (1965 to 1969) this book also presents the Porsche 912 Targa (1966 to 1969). Less well-known, but all the more intriguing, is the story of the Porsche 912E, built in 1976 just for the US market, and of which only 2099 specimens exist.
After the successful 356 Porsche introduced the new shaped 911 in 1965 but this was expensive. Porsche's answer was to put the engine from the 356 in to the 911 body and call it the 912; this came towards the end of 1965 when 356 production was phased out. Generally speaking all running changes made to the 911 were made to the 912 at the same time. The 912 was phased out at the end of 1969 to make way for the 914. The 912 was brought back in 1976 with a 4 cylinder engine and called a 912E.
