Getting Older by Robert Bailor Pdf

Is getting older to be feared or embraced? Is it merely a matter of deterioration and death or is it a platform for a new lifestyle with new opportunities and new joys? This is a story about getting older. The main character, Don, a 73-year-old retired widower is initially confused and depressed about getting older. The book takes him through the fears, the challenges and the merits of being a senior citizen. It does so on three levels of narrative. First, there is the primary story of Don’s sharing in one-on-one counseling to help him resolve his issues with aging. The Epilogue is a surprise conclusion to this counseling journey. Second, there is the presentation of Don’s own internal dialogue regarding getting older with his inner reflections combined with his counseling journal entries. Third, there are five short stories spread out over the journal entries which emphasize the truths that Don is trying to get at with his journal entries. There have been several notable books written about aging, its causes and its challenges. Yet, there has never been a book like this one. Through the art of fiction it gets to the core of the questions haunting the prospects of getting older in a way that readers can personally identify with and use to resolve their own issues with aging. If readers follow the intertwining stories, perhaps they will discover answers for themselves, at least that is the intention of this book.

Understanding Older Chicanas by Elisa Facio Pdf

Focusing on an overlooked and understudied population, Understanding Older Chicanas examines older Chicanas' lives, status, and public policy needs. Chicana elderly tend to be poor, reflecting the economic position of Chicanos in American society; they also tend to be stereotyped as widows and grandmothers, reflecting the cultural values of Mexican American society. This work shows how Chicana elderly cope with this economic and cultural marginality and how they gain the personal and financial resources they require. Author Elisa Facio also relates how scholars and public policymakers have previously understood Chicana elderly, provides new data on the social meaning of Chicana old age, and points out the implications of that meaning for future policymakers. This perceptive volume is essential reading for those in academic and policy settings who are interested in issues regarding multicultural aging experiences, diversification, life-cycle phases, socialization, and women.

Racialised Workers and European Older-Age Care by Nina Sahraoui Pdf

In the context of ageing populations, increasing participation of women in the labour market, growing marketisation of care provision, and, most importantly, global inequalities, racialised care workers have come to fulfil a key role within older-age care in western European societies. This book presents a gendered political economy of migrant and minority ethnic care workers’ experiences in older-age care in London, Paris and Madrid. Its cross-national comparative approach allows for a differentiated analysis of the workings of migration, employment and care regimes in three capital cities, with similarly segmented care sectors, yet diverse policies and implications for care workers. Sahraoui provides a novel perspective that advances debates on the ethics of care by foregrounding the voices of racialised care workers and contributing to feminist moral philosophy. Racialised Workers and European Older-Age Care offers unique insights into the meanings of care labour and the challenges arising from processes of neoliberal marketisation, precarisation and institutional racism. The book sketches out an intersectional understanding of the exploitative relationships on which care and social reproduction currently rely and demonstrates why it matters to move care from the margins of society to its centre. This innovative and compelling analysis will appeal to students and scholars of Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science and Social Policy, as well as those working in the interdisciplinary sub-fields of Gender, Migration, Labour, and Racism Studies.

Getting from Twenty to Thirty by Mike Edelhart Pdf

The decade between ages twenty and thirty is one of the most pivotal in our lives. We leave home, we find jobs, we marry. We lose old friends and make new ones. The decisions we face during this time—from where we choose to live to what career we choose to follow—are often made with little more guidance than the advice of a well-meaning (but equally uninformed) friend. We need experience-based advice and empathetic counsel for dealing with our complex and changing world. That’s what Getting from Twenty to Thirty is all about. Divided into three sections—Breaking Away, Remaking Your World, and Arriving in One Piece—this invaluable book deals with everyday problems without losing sight of our loftier ideals and more permanent concerns. At a time when money is tight, jobs scarce, and our expectations those of a more privileged era, here is sound economic, social and psychological help for a new generation.
