Monograph of Living Chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora), Volume 6 Family Schizochitonidae by Piet Kaas,Richard A. Van Belle,Herman L. Strack Pdf

Since H.A. Pilsbry’s classic work on the chitons (Polyplacophora), published between 1892 and 1894 in the Manual of Conchology, there has been no comprehensive taxonomic review of this group. Piet Kaas and Richard van Belle changed this when they started the book series Monograph of Living Chitons, which aimed, after a careful study of the type material, to systematically describe and illustrate every known - or hitherto unknown - species. The first five volumes were published between 1985 and 1994. The sudden death of seniour author Piet Kaas in 1996 postponed the publication of Volume 6. The unfinished manuscript was taken up by a new author, Hermann Strack, who in collaboration with van Belle managed to finish it. In Volume 6 no less than 167 species are treated and depicted, of which 3 are described as new. Two important families are covered: the Schizochitonidae and the Chitonidae. Especially the coverage of the Chitonidae, with well know and species-rich genera and subgenera as Chiton, Rhyssoplax, Acanthopleura, Tonicia, Lucilina and Onithochiton is long awaited and will prove very useful to researchers, students and collectors alike.

They cover a wide range of topics including phylogeny, taxonomy, geographic distribution, freshwater and marine ecology population dynamics, histology and ultrastructure, physiology and behaviour. The wide scope is in line with recent trends in annelid research with less emphasis on pollution studies and faunistics and a renewed interest in experimental biology using new techniques.

Static Stresses on Wide-bladed Propellers by Justin H. McCarthy Pdf

Static stresses were obtained in laboratory experiments for a destroyer propeller, having aerofoil blade sections, and a super-cavitating propeller, having wedge-shaped blade sections, using specially constructed pressure chambers that allowed the blade faces to be loaded under air pressure. A new method for applying beam theory is presented that closely predicts the magnitude and distribution of radial stresses on the destroyer propeller blade. For the supercavitating propeller, neither the proposed beam-theory method nor a particular computerized-shell analysis can be considered entirely satisfactory for prediction of blade stresses. The Emergence of Pressure Blade Making by Pierre M. Desrosiers Pdf

Human development is a long and steady process that began with stone tool making. Because of this skill, humans were able to adapt to climate changes, discover new territories, and invent new technologies. "Pressure knapping" is the common term for one method of creating stone tools, where a larger device or blade specifically made for this purpose is use to press out the stone tool. Pressure knapping was invented in different locations and at different points in time, representing the adoption of the Neolithic way of life in the Old world. Recent research on pressure knapping has led for the first time to a global thesis on this technique. The contributors to this seminal work combine research findings on pressure knapping from different cultures around the globe to develope a cohesive theory. This contributions to this volume represents a significant development to research on pressure knapping, as well as the field of lithic studies in general. This work will be an important reference for anyone studying the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods, lithic studies, technologies, and more generally, cultural transmission.
