The Amish Quiltmaker's Unruly In-Law by Jennifer Beckstrand Pdf
Moving to a new Amish settlement in small-town Colorado was a brave new start for independent-minded quiltmaker Esther Kiem. But helping her reckless relative will really put her special matchmaking skills to the test . . . Mischievous and rebellious, young Ben Kiem is making the wrong kind of name for himself throughout the town of Byler. And even though his sister-in-law, Esther, somehow coaxes him into keeping company with sensible Linda Eicher, Ben can’t see anything they have in common. Or that he could ever be good enough for someone like her. But Linda’s down-to-earth nature and unexpected understanding have Ben trying his best to be better, no matter how challenging . . . Linda couldn’t be more surprised when Ben turns out to be caring and helpful, despite his rowdy pranks and bad-news friends. And falling in love with him suddenly seems just right. But when a heartbreaking misunderstanding comes between them, both she and Ben must risk enough to trust, stitch the pieces back together—and dare a forever precious happiness. Praise for Jennifer Beckstrand and Abraham “This is an endearing romance that fans of Wanda Brunstetter will love.” —Publishers Weekly

Colombia, one of South Americas oldest, middle-income democracies, has developed rapidly despite a fifty year "simmering" civil war and increasing levels of urban and rural crime and violence. In the past decade, however, the scale and intensity of violence has changed from a marginal conflict to generalized violence that now dominates the daily lives of most citizens. As remote guerilla activity has turned into country-wide "war," bringing in paramilitary groups, drug cartels, and other social actors, so too the causes of violence have changed. These have included both external events such as the collapse of the Cold War, as well as internal changes relating to economic liberalization, coal and oil developments and the impact of the global trade in illicit narcotics. Violence in Colombia is highly complex not only because of the different categories, but also due to its multiple causes. This paper combines disparate existing theories to develop an integrated framework that identifies four different levels of causality: structural, institutional, interpersonal, and individual. It recognizes the mutually reinforcing role played by factors at different levels of causality. Underlying the causes of violence in Colombia is minimal state presence in many parts of the country, widespread corruption and impunity, high levels of societal acceptance of violence, and a regionally fragmented country.

Robert Eisenhauers "Winterrules" focuses on the complex and ambivalent interrelation between lived experience (autobiography) and cultural memory. "Winterrules," prompted by the old question, 'What purpose does poetry serve in an age deprived of poetic sensibility?' seeks to situate the authors personal experience within a field of cross-cultural reference, responding to aspects of the Western and Far Eastern cultural heritage, as well as scenes from contemporary life. "Winterrules" enlivens the reading experience through vivid, sometimes jarring juxtapositions, such as Tinker Toys in outer space or Dantes vision of hell. Eisenhauers wide-ranging travels are reflected in vignettes taken from the hard roads and wild coasts of North America, Europe, Mexico and the Greek Isles. While the dominant mood is serious, the poetic texts gathered here often approach their subjects with an objectivity combining clinical attachment with light-hearted engagement. As sailor, biker, teacher, translator and scholar, Eisenhauer takes the reader on a memorable voyage.
