Blank State is more than a colouring book: it is an exercise in collaboration, inviting the participant to contribute to the act of creation. Architecture and urban planning impacts our lives dramatically, dictating how we interact with our everyday environments, yet they are largely out of the layperson's control. This book allows everyone to make their mark through the use of color and value. This book reinvents an architectural legacy, a 'blank state' ready to be coloured in or not. All that is needed is imagination and a willingness to dream.
In this eagerly awaited follow-up to the international bestseller Fantastic Cities, artist Steve McDonald uses his unique large-format approach working from actual photographs to create beautifully detailed line drawings of amazing buildings and other structures from around the world. Case studies of various design challenges and solutions are presented in an easy-to-understand workshop format. Each of these studies let you dig a little deeper, giving you significant insight into the practices of professional color designers and illustrating how to clarify the planning concepts, capitalize on the visual properties of color, and select from the range of industrial materials available for both interior and exterior building surfaces."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School by Matthew Frederick Pdf
Concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation, from the basics of “How to Draw a Line” to the complexities of color theory. This is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language things that tend to be murky and abstruse in the classroom. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation—from the basics of "How to Draw a Line" to the complexities of color theory—provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy, making concrete what too often is left nebulous or open-ended in the architecture curriculum. Each lesson utilizes a two-page format, with a brief explanation and an illustration that can range from diagrammatic to whimsical. The lesson on "How to Draw a Line" is illustrated by examples of good and bad lines; a lesson on the dangers of awkward floor level changes shows the television actor Dick Van Dyke in the midst of a pratfall; a discussion of the proportional differences between traditional and modern buildings features a drawing of a building split neatly in half between the two. Written by an architect and instructor who remembers well the fog of his own student days, 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School provides valuable guideposts for navigating the design studio and other classes in the architecture curriculum. Architecture graduates—from young designers to experienced practitioners—will turn to the book as well, for inspiration and a guide back to basics when solving a complex design problem.

It distills the data provided in standard architectural volumes and is an easy-to-use reference for the most indispensable--and most requested--types of architectural information.
By the time Viennese architect Otto Wagner (1841-1918) began publishing the drawings included in this colouring book, he had already spent a great deal of his career designing buildings in the historicist style. But his attitude was changing, and in time he wholly disregarded those early designs. The images here, presented roughly chronologically, show the shifts he made throughout his career. He published these drawings as part of Einige Skizzen, Projekte und ausgefu ̈hrte Bauwerk (Sketches, Projects and Executed Buildings), beginning in 1890 and ending with a posthumous fourth volume in 1922.Some one hundred years after Wagner's death, his mark can still be found throughout his hometown, in buildings that include the Church of St. Leopold (a.k.a. Kirche am Steinhof), the architect's two villas, and former railway buildings for the Stadtbahn. Drawings for those structures are among these images, but many of the others you will find here were never completed. Despite this, today Wagner is celebrated for his lasting contributions to the architectural spirit of Vienna.
