Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics (Classic Reprint) by Charles R. Allen Pdf

Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics The book is made up mainly Of the author's instructions to his own pupils for their laboratory work. The course of which this forms a part includes also the performance of all necessary descriptive experiments before the class, and the use of a text-book. Before the pupil goes to work in the laboratory at all, he-should be given a general idea of how knowledge is acquired experimentally, and the steps involved in carrying on an experimental investigation. The instruction on these points should be illustrated by some simple typical experiments by the teacher. After wards the relative order Of text-book and laboratory work will naturally depend upon the nature of the laboratory exercises. In exercises involving the study of conditions, as in those on Magnetism, and some of those on Electricity and Heat, the author prefers that the laboratory work pre cede the text-book work; but in exercises involving definite measurement, as in Specific Gravity and Specific Heat, this order may well be reversed. Certainly, in the determina tion of a physical law by measurements of two values, as in the exercises on Elasticity or on the Pendulum, the labora tory work should come first. Excerpt from Elementary Course in Experimental Physics Because the laboratory period has been reduced from three to two hours, some of the exercises have been shortened. The details of a considerable number of exercises differ from those of previous texts, and many of the experiments have been entirely rewritten, although treating in general of the same principles as heretofore, with a few exceptions. Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics by Franklin H. Ayres Pdf

Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics: A Manual for Students in Academies and High Schools This little work is, as its name implies, simply a manual of exercises in elementary physics. No claim is made that it embraces all the exercises suitable for work of this grade. It is believed, however, that the exercises as herein presented constitute a sound basis for a strong, rational, and flexible course in elementary laboratory physics. There has been no attempt in this book to usurp the functions of the teacher. Much of the details of the work are most effective when they come directly from him. The inspiration must also come, in large measure, from the instructor; no book can take his place in this particular. In handling laboratory work in physics of any grade, the instructor is confronted at all times with the serious problem of providing apparatus. This problem is all the more serious in view of the fact that good work, even in elementary physics, is quite impossible without reasonably good apparatus. Speaking to this very point, Professor Nichols has said: "The list of instruments essential to the carrying on of an effective course in laboratory physics is not a large one. It includes certain standard apparatus, such as the balance, the air-pump, the thermometer, the projecting lantern, the electrical machine, and the galvanometer; together with such accessories as are necessary to use with these instruments. Without such an equipment, no college or school should attempt to give instruction in physics." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Text-Book of Physics by Edwin H. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from Text-Book of Physics: Largely Experimental; Including the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics" The laboratory Exercises of the book are, save in a few unimportant particulars identical with those given in the Harvard Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Phys ics, as revised in 1903. The second edition of the book, issued in 1897, was divided into a First Part and a Second Part, the former intended for pupils a year or two younger than those tak ing the latter; and certain subjects, Liquids and Gases, Composition and Resolution of Forces, Gravity and Centre of Gravity, begun in the First Part were taken up again, for more thorough treatment, in the Second Part. The present edition, the third, abolishes this dis continuity and puts the substance of Chapters XIV, XV, and XVI of the second edition into the early part, thus shortening and simplifying the book. On the other hand, the Pendulum is put farther on, into connection with Mo mentum, etc. This rearrangement involves a renumbering of some of the Exercises, which are, for the most part, not greatly changed in their latest rev1s1on. Alongside the new number at the head of each Exercise its old number is given in parenthesis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Elementary Physics and Chemistry by Richard Arman Gregory Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. Experimental Science by Richard Gregory Pdf

Excerpt from Experimental Science: An Elementary Course of Physics and Chemistry Many of the experiments follow the course of instruction in elementary science contained in the physics and chemistry syllabus prepared by a Committee of the Incorporated Association of Head Masters. The results are indicated in each case, hence the experiments may be regarded in a way as solved examples of the general laws and phenomena Of physical science, but the examples can only be properly understood by actually following the various stages which lead to their solution. In a few sec tions of the book it has been necessary to illustrate by numerical examples the principles involved and to exercise the studentin solving simple problems of this kind numerous questions have been added to the chapters. For a large number of these, and more especially for those appended to Chapters III - VII, we are indebted to Mr. Walter J. Wood, who has collected many from actual examination papers, and has supplied the answers. Throughout the preparation of the following pages we have found the assistance and advice Of Professor R. A. Gregory invaluable. Teachers who know Professor Gregory's Exercise Book of Elementary Practical Physics will recognise in the earlier chapters of the present volume several experiments described in that book. The Opportunity of expressing thanks for permission to introduce these is gladly taken; and we also desire to express our Obligations to the Publishers for permitting free use of suitable illustrations from several of their elementary books in the various branches of science with which this volume is concerned. Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage (Classic Reprint) by R. A. Gregory Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage This book is the second of three little volumes containing a course of experimental work on the elementary principles of Physics and Chemistry. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes ought to be possessed by everyone. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things: for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Unfortunately, it is not often possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. When circumstances permit, every pupil should perform the experiments, and when this is impossible he should see them done by someone else. The Elements of Physics (Classic Reprint) by S. E. Coleman Pdf

Excerpt from The Elements of Physics This book is intended as a text for a first course in physics. It presupposes a knowledge of elementary algebra and plane geometry, but requires no further mathematical training. While complete in itself as a text-book, it assumes the support of a systematic course of laboratory exercises essentially equivalent to the author's Physical Laboratory Manual.' The exercises in this manual are referred to by number in the body of the text, in connection with the topics which they serve to illustrate. The text and the manual together present a single, coherent course in elementary physics. The subject-matter has been selected with reference primarily to its value as a part of a general education, and includes an unusual amount of information based upon the facts of our daily experience, introduced as illustrations and applications of phys ical principles. This relieves the teacher from the necessity of providing for and supervising a considerable amount of reference reading, in order to rescue the subject from the uninteresting barrenness to which it has been reduced in many of the more recent text-books. An Elementary Course in Practical Physics (Classic Reprint) by F. Castle Pdf

Excerpt from An Elementary Course in Practical Physics The older method of giving statistical information on science subjects was very unsatisfactory, alike to teacher and to student, and is now being replaced by a better system, in which the student, instead of seeing an experiment performed by the practised hand of a teacher, is furnished with the necessary apparatus, and with information sufficient to enable him to carry it out with some approach to accuracy. In this manner, instead of attempting the hopeless task of remembering a law, often expressed in language which he cannot understand, he finds from careful experiments, and by the liberal use of squared paper, that such a law exists - he can even trace it in a rough experiment (and the apparatus which is sometimes given to students is as rough as it is possible to make it) but with care and proper precautions he is able to obtain either an accurate result, or at least a good approximation to it. Having proceeded so far, there is, at any rate, some incentive to induce him to try to understand more clearly what the law implies, and it thus becomes of vital interest and importance, instead of a mere jargon of words to be carefully remembered for examination purposes. As will be seen on reference to the following pages, the attempt is made to include only those experiments which are well within the capabilities of first and second year students in science schools and classes. The grouping together of one or more sections of each subject into chapters affords an opportunity of giving at the end of each a short recapitulatory summary, and, in addition, numerical exercises on the subject-matter. These are chiefly selected from the examina tion papers of the Science and Art Department. Solutions to these are given where necessary, and the answers to the remainder. Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics by Edwin H. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics: Corresponding to the Requirement in Elementary Experimental Physics for Admission to Harvard College and the Lawrence Scientific School A course of study dealing with the leading elementary facts and principles of physics, with quantitative laboratory work by the pupil. The instruction given in this course should include qualitative lecture-room experiments, and should direct especial attention to the illustrations and applications of physical laws to be found in every day life. The candidate will be required to pass a written examina tion, the main object of which will be to determine how much he has profited by such instruction. This examination may include numerical problems. It will contain more questions than any one candidate is expected to answer, in order to make allowance for a considerable diversity of instruction in different schools. The pupil's laboratory work should give practice in the observa tion and explanation of physical phenomena, some familiarity with methods of measurement and some training of the hand and the eye in the direction of precision and skill. It should also be regarded as a means of fixing in the mind of the pupil a considerable variety of facts and principles. The candidate will be required to pass a laboratory examination, the main object of which will be to deter mine how much he has profited by such a laboratory course.
