Agroforestry Systems in the Tropics by P.K. Nair Pdf

This book consolidates the descriptive results of a pantropical project called Agroforestry Systems Inventory (AFSI), undertaken by the International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) from 1982 to 1987. Since agroforestry was a relatively new term when the project was initiated, the main objective was to increase the understanding of and provide a state-of the-art information base on existing agroforestry systems. Therefore, the project was designed to systematically collect, collate, synthesize, and dissem inate information on existing agroforestry systems in developing countries. One of the major results of the project, descriptions of existing agroforestry systems, was published as a series of articles in Agroforestry Systems. These system descriptions form the bulk of this book. Other products of the project include a microcomputer database on agroforestry systems, practices and components, and voluminous unpublished reports and records. Perhaps the title of the book is misleading in that the book does not include or cover all existing agroforestry systems in the tropics and geographical regions in the tropics. Additionally, some of the systems described are outside the tropical boul;ldaries of 23. 5" Nand S latitudes. For the purpose of this book, the word tropics is used in a general sense to also include subtropical developing countries that have agro-ecological and socio-economic character istics and land-use problems similar to those of the countries within the geographical limits of the tropical belt.

Carbon Sequestration Potential of Agroforestry Systems by B. Mohan Kumar,P. K. Ramachandran Nair Pdf

Tree based production systems abound especially in the tropics. Despite the pervasiveness of such multipurpose “trees-outside-forest” resources, they have not attracted adequate attention in the development paradigms of many nation states. These multispecies production systems impact the ecosystem processes favourably. Yet, our understanding of the diversity attributes and carbon dynamics under agroforestry is not adequate. This book focuses on the role of multispecies production systems involving tree and crop species as a means for carbon sequestration and thereby reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Sixteen chapters organized into three broad sections titled: Measurement and Estimation, Agrobiodiversity and Tree Management, and Policy and Socioeconomic Aspects represent a cross section of the opportunities and challenges in current research and emerging issues in harnessing carbon sequestration potential of agroforestry systems.

Priorities for Forestry and Agroforestry Policy Research by H. M. Gregersen,Peter Oram,John Spears Pdf

The focus of the workshop was on policy and economic issues associated with developing alternativas to slash-and-burn agriculture, since that form of land use is a major cause of tropical deforestation. Particular emphasis is given to the distribution and growth of populations in tropical forest areas, to the effects of shortnend fallow periods, and to opportunities for addressing policy research needs in these areas.

Handbook on Agroforestry by Lawrence R. Kellimore Pdf

Agroforestry is an approach to alternative land use based on deliberate integration of trees with crops and livestock production systems. It combines agricultural and forestry technologies to create more diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land-use systems. Agroforestry can include various types of practices, including alley cropping, forest farming, shelterbelts (or timberbelts), riparian buffer strips, and silvopastoral systems. In arid and semi-arid environments, agroforestry systems potentially support livelihood improvement through simultaneous production of food, fodder and firewood without much affecting climate change. Careful selection of species and good management of trees and crops are needed to optimise the production and positive effects within the system and to minimise negative competitive effects. This book gathers the latest research from around the globe in the study of agroforestry and highlights such topics as traditional and modern agroforestry in Mediterranean regions, integration of native genetic resources in agroforestry, women agroforestry practices in refugee settlements, a discussion of the major obstacles that prevent increased agroforestry improvements, and the advantages and constrains of agroforestry systems establishment in various Brazilian biomes.

The Role of Trees in Sustainable Agriculture by R.T. Prinsley Pdf

Agroforestry reserach and development in Australia has been largely fragmented and many of the research results have never been published and are unknown. The purpose of this volume is to comprehensively review all of the research that has taken place in the field of agroforestry in Australia, including previously unpublished results, providing readers with the latest technical and economic information about using trees in agriculture for the control of salinity and erosion, for shelter and shade, and for the production of timber, fodder and minor forest products. The book provides information concerning planted trees within all of these categories and includes special review of the management of native vegetation on farms. These papers also examine research needs where appropriate. This book stems from the National Australian Conference on 'The Role of Trees in Sustainable Agriculture' which took place in Albury, Victoria, Australia in October, 1991. Each national review paper is based upon a summary of six or more state review research and development papers, prepared specifically for the national conference. The book thus provides readers with a comprehensive overview of agroforestry rsearch in Australia, which is introduced and summarised in the first chapter.

Agroforestry and tenure by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

This paper has been produced as a follow-up to the FAO guidelines "Advancing Agroforestry on the Policy Agenda - a guide for decision makers". The purpose of this document is to provide a review of the main tenure-related challenges that can affect agroforestry adoption to inform policies and project implementation. Drawing on practical cases, the document also presents measures and approaches which could potentially fuel the adoption of agroforestry, concluding with a number of specific recommendations for formulation and implementation of tenure policies promoting agroforestry.

Agroforestry in Sub-Saharan Africa by Cynthia C. Cook,Mikael Grut Pdf

First agroforestry in Africa is described. Then the results of seven case studies are presented, which cover indigenous and innovative systems found in the highlands of East Africa, the semi-arid zone, and the humid lowlands of West Africa. Recommendations are made for the technical, economic, social and institutional design of projects and for the direction of future research
