A Monograph of the Myxogastres (Classic Reprint) by George Massee Pdf

Excerpt from A Monograph of the Myxogastres Respecting the nature and affinities of the Myxogastres, we find the following in Professor De Bary's last work on the subject I have, since the year 1858, placed the Myxomycetes under the name of Mycetozoa outside the limits of the vegetable kingdom, and I still consider this to be their true position.2 This statement has been generally interpreted, and probably correctly, as signifying that De Bary looked upon his Mycetozoa as animals; but it would perhaps have been wiser to have stated this belief point - blank, and to have chosen some other word than Mycetozoa to designate the group, thereby dispelling any lingering of doubt as to his meaning. The difficulty is not lessened by De Bary's introductory paragraph on the Mycetozoa, which is as follows The name Mycetozoa is here applied to a group of fungus-like organisms amounting at the present time to nearly three hundred species, the larger number of which are contained in the division Myxomycetes or slime-fungi (the Myxogastres of Fries), together with the smaller one distin guished by Van Tieghem under the name of Acrasieae. Systematics and Evolution by David J. McLaughlin,Joseph W. Spatafora Pdf

This volume includes treatments of systematics and related topics for both fungi and fungus-like organisms in four eukaryotic supergroups, as well as specialized chapters on nomenclature, techniques and evolution. These organisms are of great interest to mycologists, plant pathologists and others, including those interested in the animal parasitic Microsporidia. Our knowledge of the systematics and evolution of fungi has made great strides since the first edition of this volume, largely driven by molecular phylogenetic analyses. Consensus among mycologists has led to a stable systematic treatment that has since become widely adopted and is incorporated into this second edition, along with a great deal of new information on evolution and ecology. The systematic chapters cover occurrence, distribution, economic importance, morphology and ultrastructure, development of taxonomic theory, classification and maintenance and culture. Other chapters deal with nomenclatural changes necessitated by revisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants, including the elimination of separate names for asexual states, as well as methods for preservation of cultures and specimens, character evolution and methods for ultrastructural study, the fungal fossil record and the impact of whole genomes on fungal studies.

The Mycetozoans by Lindsay Olive Pdf

The Mycetozoans brings together, for the first time in a single volume, comprehensive information on the biology and classification of the mycetozoans and associated groups. The mycetozoans and their associates remain of prime interest to taxonomists and phylogenists because major new taxa continue to be discovered among them. This book informs the reader where to find mycetozoans, how to isolate and culture them, their life cycles and ultrastructure, and some of the experiments that may be performed with them. It presents studies on Protostelia (protostelids); Dictyostelia (dictyostelid cellular slime molds); Myxogastria (myxomycetes); Acrasea (acrasid cellular slime molds); Plasmodiophorina (plasmodiophorids); and Labyrinthulas (labyrinthulina and thraustochytrids). This text can serve as a reference tool in courses on mycetozoans, protozoology, mycology, and developmental biology of lower organisms, and as a concentrated source of information for research workers in all aspects of the biology and taxonomy of these organisms.

Comprehensive and Molecular Phytopathology by Yuri Dyakov,Vitaly Dzhavakhiya,Timo Korpela Pdf

This book offers a collection of information on successive steps of molecular ‘dialogue’ between plants and pathogens. It additionally presents data that reflects intrinsic logic of plant-parasite interactions. New findings discussed include: host and non-host resistance, specific and nonspecific elicitors, elicitors and suppressors, and plant and animal immunity. This book enables the reader to understand how to promote or prevent disease development, and allows them to systematize their own ideas of plant-pathogen interactions. * Offers a more extensive scope of the problem as compared to other books in the market * Presents data to allow consideration of host-parasite relationships in dynamics and reveals interrelations between pathogenicity and resistance factors * Discusses beneficial plant-microbe interactions and practical aspects of molecular investigations of plant-parasite relationships * Compares historical study of common and specific features of plant immunity with animal immunity
