MRS. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a littlehollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops and traversed by a brook that had itssource away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool andcascade; but by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted littlestream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due regardfor decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at herwindow, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, andthat if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferretedout the whys and wherefores thereof. There are plenty of people in Avonlea and out of it, who can attend closely to theirneighbor's business by dint of neglecting their own; but Mrs. Rachel Lynde was one of thosecapable creatures who can manage their own concerns and those of other folks into thebargain. She was a notable housewife; her work was always done and well done; she "ran"the Sewing Circle, helped run the Sunday-school, and was the strongest prop of the ChurchAid Society and Foreign Missions Auxiliary. Yet with all this Mrs. Rachel found abundanttime to sit for hours at her kitchen window, knitting "cotton warp" quilts-she had knittedsixteen of them, as Avonlea housekeepers were wont to tell in awed voices-and keeping asharp eye on the main road that crossed the hollow and wound up the steep red hillbeyond. Since Avonlea occupied a little triangular peninsula jutting out into the Gulf of St.Lawrence with water on two sides of it, anybody who went out of it or into it had to passover that hill road and so run the unseen gauntlet of Mrs. Rachel's all-seeing eye

With a large 7.44" x 9.69" page size, this edition is printed on heavyweight 55# bright white paper with a fully laminated cover featuring an original full color design. Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author best known for Anne of Green Gables (1908) and its sequels. Her work was, for the most part, based on her own life and surroundings. Somewhat sentimental but charming nonetheless, her tales of Anne, a high-spirited orphan girl taken in by an older brother and sister who think they are getting a boy who can help on their farm, have delighted readers for generations and inspired several movie and television adaptations. Montgomery's mother died before she was two, and she was sent to live with her maternal grandparents on their farm on Prince Edward Island, with her paternal grandparents also living nearby. "Maud" spent an idyllic childhood in the fields and woods surrounding the farming communities of the island. Educated at the island's Cavendish School, she stayed with her father and his second wife in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan while attending high school and eventually earned a teacher's license from Prince of Wales College in 1893. She gave up teaching and moved back to her grandparents' farm after the death of her grandfather, taking a position as a proofreader with an area newspaper briefly while pursuing a career as a writer. A few poems and short stories were published before she finished Anne of Green Gables in 1904, but it would be four years and numerous rejections later, in 1908, before her first novel found a publisher. An immediate success, the book launched her long and successful writing career. She married in 1911 and following a honeymoon in England and Scotland the couple settled in Leaskdale, north of Uxbridge, Ontario where her husband served as parish minister. They had three sons, one of whom died in infancy, and while raising her children Montgomery continued to write further Anne works, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. In 1923 Montgomery became the first Canadian woman to join the Royal Society of Arts in Britain. In 1935 she became a member of the Literary and Artistic Institute of France and was awarded the Order of the British Empire. As the popularity of her "good and jolly stories" with happy endings declined, by the late 1930's so too did the health of both Montgomery and her husband. He retired from the ministry and they moved to Swasea, west of Toronto, where both apparently suffered from severe depression along with physical decline. In 1938 she suffered a nervous breakdown while he underwent elctroshock treatments for mental health issues. Lucy Maud Montgomery Macdonald died of congestive heart failure in Toronto on April 24, 1942. Her body lay in state at Green Gables, following which she was buried in nearby Cavendish Cemetery.

Anne of Green Gables (Large Print Edition) by L. M. Montgomery (Illustrated) by Nicholas Tamblyn,L. M. Montgomery Pdf

Presenting the Large Print edition of Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. Also available from Golding Books is The Essential L. M. Montgomery: Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, and Anne's House of Dreams with an introduction by Nicholas Tamblyn, and illustrations by Katherine Eglund. This collection is part of Golding Books' Essential Series. The character of Anne Shirley, first appearing in Anne of Green Gables (1908), has become beloved around the world. She is a character for all seasons--romantic, imaginative, passionate, and sensitive, and therefore she is kind, loving, and creative at heart. She gains considerable knowledge over the years and, through that knowledge, becomes a teacher and a kind-hearted protector of others. As inescapable as the struggles and doubts of life can be, she chooses to be courageous in the face of daunting odds--this is why Anne Shirley will always be one of the most affectionately admired of literary companions. A feel-good novel (or collection of them along with other stories) in the truest sense, Anne's adventures are not merely young adult fiction or children's classics or girls fiction (as some of the marketability or book design might suggest), and their popularity around the world and with people of different ages shares the truth of this. Anne is a strong female lead with a truly soft side, and her coming of age story (particularly in Anne of Green Gables, but further in Anne of Avonlea and the others) will appeal to the better nature of all readers, young and old. L. M. Montgomery's classics of Canadian fiction and North American literature present a strong female protagonist, but the feminist message of the story speaks to common human experience and a meaningful and powerful humanist literature. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton on the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island in 1874. She felt that her lonely childhood and the creation of many imaginary friends developed her artistic expression. Writing as L. M. Montgomery, she published 20 novels and hundreds of short stories and poems, but she is most celebrated as the author of the Prince Edward Island-set Anne of Green Gables (1908) and its numerous sequels (the lead character Anne Shirley appears in a major role in six books and in a lesser role in three other books and two collections of short stories). In 1935, Montgomery was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. She died in Toronto in 1942.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Montgomery Pdf

When Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew, decide to adopt a child from a distant orphanage, they don't get quite what they bargained for. The child who awaits them at the tiny Bright River train station is not the strapping young boy they'd imagined--someone to help Matthew work the fields of their small farm--but rather a freckle-faced, redheaded girl named Anne (with an e, if you please). Matthew and Marilla may not be sure about Anne, but Anne takes one look at Prince Edward Island's red clay roads and the Cuthberts' snug white farmhouse with its distinctive green gables and decides that she's home at last. But will she be able to convince Marilla and Matthew to let her stay? Armed with only a battered carpetbag and a boundless imagination, Anne charms her way into the Cuthberts' hearts--and into the hearts of readers as well. She truly is, in the words of Mark Twain, "the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice."
