This reference provides a checklist of species and recommends common names. Fifty-seven species have been added to the second edition, which also omits many species found to be synonymous or extralimital (all the changes from the first edition are noted in an appendix). A series of color plates follows the text. It seems the CD-ROM contains a duplicate of the text itself. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America by J. Reese Voshell Pdf

Popular interest in the observation and study of freshwater invertebrates is increasing. This book meets the needs of this growing audience of naturalists, environmentalists, anglers, teachers, students, and others by providing substantive information in easy-to-understand, non-technical language for many groups of invertebrates commonly found in the streams, lakes, ponds, and other freshwater environments of North America. Section One provides background information on the biology and ecology of freshwater organisms and environments and explains why and how invertebrates can be studied, simply and without complex equipment, in the field and the laboratory. Section Two describes nearly 100 of the most common groups of invertebrates, and for each group a whole-body colour illustration is provided along with brief text pointing out the most important features that identify members of the group. Section Three contains in-depth descriptions of the life history, behaviour, and ecology of the various invertebrate groups, and explains their important ecological contributions and relationships to humans. The Guide is broad in scope, geographically and taxonomically, and it is written at a substantive yet easily accessible level that will appeal to both novices and those with more advanced knowledge of the subject. It also contains more than 100 specially commissioned colour illustrations by the well-known scientific illustrator Amy Bartlett Wright that will greatly facilitate the easy and rapid identification of specimens.

Freshwater Invertebrates in Central Europe by György Kriska Pdf

This up-to-date guidebook on freshwater invertebrates of the central European region is a richly illustrated work, providing an excellent source of systematic information on freshwater macroinvertebrates. Numerous colour photos and additional vector graphic figures allow readers to identify specific species at a higher taxonomic level (family). The book is supplemented by video sequences. Freshwater Invertebrates in Central Europe – A Field Guide is a must-have for all those interested in the freshwater animals of central Europe such as animal scientists and ecologists, as well as students attending classes on freshwater invertebrate.

Common and Scientific Names of Aquatic Invertebrates from the United States and Canada by Patsy A. McLaughlin,Donna D. Turgeon Pdf

This edition represents the second edition of the list of decapod crustaceans and the first edition of the list of all other crustacean groups, including terrestrial, freshwater, and marine forms. The list has been greatly expanded to include more than 9,000 species from the United States (now including Hawaiian species) and Canada. Several detailed appendices have been added, including changes and additions to the entries for decapod crustaceans from the first edition and lists of endangered or threatened species, presumably extinct species, and nonindigenous species. The introduction is also expanded to include a detailed description of the diversity within the subphylum Crustacea.

Chemical Signals by D. Muller-Schwarze Pdf

Research on chemical communication in animals is in a very active and exciting phase; more species are studied, data are accumulating, concepts are changing, and practical application seems feasible. While most of the work on chemical ecology and chemical sig nals deals with insects, vertebrate communication provides a formidable challenge and progress has been slow. Joint efforts and frequent direct contacts of ecologists, behaviorists, psychologists, physiologists, histologists and chemists are required. Such an interdisciplinary exchange of information took place on the occasion of the Symposium on Chemical Signals in Vertebrates and Aquatic Animals in Syracuse, New York, from May 31 to June 2, 1979. More than one hundred investigators from seven countries participated, and the papers presented comprise this volume. Since the first Symposium on Vertebrate Chemical Signals at Saratoga Springs in 1976, considerable progress has been made with field studies, the physiology of the vomeronasal organ, and its role in reproductive behavior. The behavioral functions and chemi cal nature of priming pheromones are better understood. Efforts to isolate and identify mammalian pheromones are gaining ground, and the bioassays are becoming more sophisticated. In addition to formal presentations, one evening of the Symposi um was devoted to round-table discussions of particular topics. The selected themes indicate the "growing points" of chemical communi cation research: priming pheromones, vomeronasal organ, bioassay, and practical applications.

Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates by James H. Thorp,D. Christopher Rogers Pdf

Readers familiar with the first three editions of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp and A.P. Covich) will welcome the comprehensive revision and expansion of that trusted professional reference manual and educational textbook from a single North American tome into a developing multi-volume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world. The series entitled Thorp and Covich’s Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp) begins with the current Volume I: Ecology and General Biology (edited by J.H. Thorp and D.C. Rogers), which is designed as a companion volume for the remaining books in the series. Those following volumes provide taxonomic coverage for specific zoogeographic regions of the world, starting with Keys to Nearctic Fauna (Vol. II) and Keys to Palaearctic Fauna (Vol. III). Volume I maintains the ecological and general biological focus of the previous editions but now expands coverage globally in all chapters, includes more taxonomic groups (e.g., chapters on individual insect orders), and covers additional functional topics such as invasive species, economic impacts, and functional ecology. As in previous editions, the 4th edition of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates is designed for use by professionals in universities, government agencies, and private companies as well as by undergraduate and graduate students. Global coverage of aquatic invertebrate ecology Discussions on invertebrate ecology, phylogeny, and general biology written by international experts for each group Separate chapters on invasive species and economic impacts and uses of invertebrates Eight additional chapters on insect orders and a chapter on freshwater millipedes Four new chapters on collecting and culturing techniques, ecology of invasive species, economic impacts, and ecological function of invertebrates Overall expansion of ecology and general biology and a shift of the even more detailed taxonomic keys to other volumes in the projected 9-volume series Identification keys to lower taxonomic levels

Diapause in Aquatic Invertebrates by Victor R. Alekseev,Bart De Stasio,John J. Gilbert Pdf

Many authors of this new book were participants at the workshop on diapause in aquatic invertebrates (Pallanza, Italy 2003). This book consists of two major parts: phenomenology of diapause and significance of this adaptation in scientific and practical uses. It combines the theoretical part with the application of knowledge on diapause in the wide spectrum of scientific and applied fields.
