Opening the Gates by Donald Reid Pdf

How the occupation of a watch factory became one of the iconic labor struggles after May 1968 In 1973, faced with massive layoffs, workers at the legendary Lip watch firm in Besançon, France, occupied their factory to demand that no one lose their job. They seized watches and watch parts, assembled and sold watches, and paid their own salaries. Their actions recaptured the ideals of May 1968, when 11 million workers had gone on strike to demand greater autonomy and to overturn the status quo. Educated by ’68, the men and women at the Besançon factory formed committees to control every aspect of what became a national struggle. Female employees developed a working-class feminism, combating workplace sexual harassment and male control of the union. The endurance of the Lip movement and its appeal through the 1970s came from its rich democratic, participatory culture. The factory workers welcomed supporters and engaged with them, an expression of solidarity between blue-collar and student activists that built on the legacy of 1968. Opening the Gates: The Lip Affair, 1968–1981 is the first account of all facets of the experience, drawing extensively on unpublished materials to reconstruct the vision and practice of those involved. The Lip workers’ struggle was the last widespread expression in France of the belief that creativity and moral autonomy are the driving force of social transformation. It brought about what Sartre called “the extension of the field of possibilities”—not just for workers, but for all those who gave the movement support and meaning.

Victorian and Edwardian British Industrial Architecture by Lynn Pearson Pdf

By the end of Queen Victoria's reign, factories had become an inescapable part of the townscape, their chimneys dominating urban views while their labourers filled the streets, coming and going between work and home. This book is concerned with the architecture, planning and design of those factories that were part of the second wave of the industrial revolution. The book's geographical range encompasses the whole of the British Isles while its time span covers the Victorian and Edwardian eras, 1837- 1910, and the period leading up to the First World War. It also looks back to earlier buildings and gives some consideration to the interwar years and beyond, including the fate of our factory heritage in the twenty-first century. Factories, not surprisingly given their early working conditions, have had a bad press. It is sometimes forgotten that they were often the centres of thriving local communities, while their physical presence and wonderfully varied buildings enlivened our towns and cities. It is time for a new look at factory architecture. Well illustrated with 150 colour and black & white photographs.

Challenging the Mandate of Heaven by Elizabeth J. Perry Pdf

Social science theories of contentious politics have been based almost exclusively on evidence drawn from the European and American experience, and classic texts in the field make no mention of either the Chinese Communist revolution or the Cultural Revolution -- surely two of the most momentous social movements of the twentieth century. Moreover, China's record of popular upheaval stretches back well beyond this century, indeed all the way back to the third century B.C. This book, by bringing together studies of protest that span the imperial, Republican, and Communist eras, introduces Chinese patterns and provides a forum to consider ways in which contentious politics in China might serve to reinforce, refine or reshape theories derived from Western cases.

China by Joseph Y.S. CHENG Pdf

This volume presents a timely assessment of the Hu Wen Administration at the juncture of preparing a change of China s leadership in 2012 13. The assessment is important because the administration s apparent success tends to create a path-dependent orientation on the part of its successor. Bringing together a collection of nineteen major essays, this book offers a fresh perspective of evaluating the performance and achievements of China in the Hu Wen era in terms of economic development, the establishment of a rudimentary social security system and her rising international status. The new opportunities and challenges facing China, and how will the likely successors Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang handle those opportunities and challenges, as well as new policy programmes will also be discussed in greater detail. Each essay is written by experts and scholars from different academic disciplines and backgrounds to provide readers with a unique overview of their respective areas of expertise.

Let Me Sell You a Ferrari by Robert E. Guarino Pdf

The moment in 1958 when a sports car-crazed youth in Massachusetts saw his first Ferrari changed his life. The black 250 GT coupe's seductive lines, purposeful air and already hallowed name seized Robert E. Guarino's imagination; just a few years later, he would be selling such cars. And in 1967, with two partners and an investment of just $6,000 apiece, he would open a Ferrari-Porsche-Datsun dealership. This memoir follows his lifelong journey with Ferraris and other remarkable automobiles, as an enthusiast and dealer. Highlights include a nonstop drive from Chicago to Boston in a 308 GTB; rides with important figures like Piero Ferrari at Fiorano and Dario Benuzzi at Mugello; visits to the Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini factories; the horror of watching a delivery truck crash onto a row of new cars; and time at the wheel of such icons as the 365 GTB/4 "Daytona," 250 GTO, 288 GTO and F40.
