Children of 2010 by Valora Washington Pdf

In the twenty-first century, no single racial or ethnic group will constitute a majority of young people in an increasing number of states and communities in the United States, and, therefore, children need to be prepared to share a society of diverse students, neighbors, and co-workers. This book addresses some of the issues involved in making democracy work for the next generation of children, called the children of 2010, and explores population trends, the need to respect cultural and individual differences, problems confronting children and youth, best practices for programs, and action strategies for seeking needed change. The book is based on three dialogue sessions sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children conducted among national leaders. The sections of the book are: (1) "Democracy for a New Century"; (2) "The Knowledge Base: Demographics"; (3) "The Knowledge Base: Diversity, Change, and Opportunity"; (4) "Best Practices: Principles, Volunteerism, and the News Media"; (5) "Best Practices: Movements to Change Society"; (6) "Visions of 2010 and How to Get There"; and (7) "Letter to the Children of 2010." Each section is organized into four parts reflecting the dialogue process: focusing on a theme; exploring information; reflecting on learning; and dialoguing to expand the ideas. The book concludes with questions regarding the changes in personal lives, professions and workplaces, communities, values, the socioeconomic system, and commitment to activism to make full participation in democracy accessible to all children of 2010. Contains approximately 50 references. (KB)

Working Today for a Better Tomorrow in Ethiopia by Emily Weedon Chapman,The World Bank,Margaux Vinez Pdf

Ethiopia has long prioritized creating more and better jobs as core to its sustainable and inclusive development. However, steady growth in the gross domestic product and gains in agricultural productivity in recent decades have not translated into better opportunities nor increased earnings for much of the population. The 2021 Labor Force Survey data reveal labor trends since 1999 and underscore these realities. Moreover, COVID-19 and other shocks have reinforced the disconnect between positive macroeconomic trends at a national level and stagnant incomes at the household level. Working Today for a Better Tomorrow in Ethiopia: Jobs for Poor and Vulnerable Households outlines how Ethiopia can leverage its social safety net programs to help poor and vulnerable workers earn more in today’s labor market. The government’s latest development planning policies focus on private sector growth and structural transformation to create more and better jobs. While these long-term reforms take hold, the jobs agenda also must include near-term measures to improve worker productivity in and connect people to jobs that already exist. Complementing cash transfers with capital, training, and other services can help workers earn more in their current work, diversify into new types of employment, or connect to available wage jobs. These investments can have an immediate impact for poor people in Ethiopia while also contributing to sustainable and inclusive development.

Pursuing a Better Tomorrow by Blanca De La Rosa Pdf

What would you give up today for a better tomorrow? Many individuals give up the only world they know in pursuit of a better tomorrow. Spanning more than one hundred years, Pursuing a Better Tomorrow, is not just a memoir that portrays the history of three generations, but rather an inspiring cross-generational journey from Spain to the US. Four interconnected stories focus on one of the main characters in a given era. Their personal stories illustrate the challenges and opportunities of immigration, acculturation, coming of age, and self-discovery through the characters’ psychological and moral growth. The characters portray the strength of character required to achieve a better tomorrow given the twists, turns, and synchronistic events that shaped their lives. The novel transports the reader to a time long forgotten with a readable historical overview of the Taíno, the conquistadors, early settlers, the Spanish Empire, and the Dominican Republic, interspersed within the narrative through the perspective of the character of the era. De La Rosa candidly shares her coming-of-age story of self-discovery as she transitioned from New York City’s projects to corporate America, detailing her personal and professional journey. From humble beginnings—and despite a myriad of challenges—unfolded a life of untold blessings and opportunities. “Pursuing a Better Tomorrow is entertaining as well as inspiring. The author’s tone is motivating.... offers a balanced view of immigration and all that it entails.” —OnlineBookClub.org Blanca De La Rosa was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City’s public housing, attended public high school, and graduated from Pace University. She retired from ExxonMobil after thirty-four years of service.

Children of Immigration by Carola Suárez-Orozco,Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco Pdf

Now in the midst of the largest wave of immigration in history, America, mythical land of immigrants, is once again contemplating a future in which new arrivals will play a crucial role in reworking the fabric of the nation. At the center of this prospect are the children of immigrants, who make up one fifth of America's youth. This book, written by the codirectors of the largest ongoing longitudinal study of immigrant children and their families, offers a clear, broad, interdisciplinary view of who these children are and what their future might hold. For immigrant children, the authors write, it is the best of times and the worst. These children are more likely than any previous generation of immigrants to end up in Ivy League universities--or unschooled, on parole, or in prison. Most arrive as motivated students, respectful of authority and quick to learn English. Yet, at the same time, many face huge obstacles to success, such as poverty, prejudice, the trauma of immigration itself, and exposure to the materialistic, hedonistic world of their native-born peers. The authors vividly describe how forces within and outside the family shape these children's developing sense of identity and their ambivalent relationship with their adopted country. Their book demonstrates how "Americanization," long an immigrant ideal, has, in a nation so diverse and full of contradictions, become ever harder to define, let alone achieve.
