Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of Oriental Porcelain and Pottery: Lent for Exhibition by A. W. Franks, Esq., F. R. S., F. S. A Since the publication of the first edition of this catalogue, I have endeavoured to render the collection more complete; especially in the Japanese sections, which were far from Illustrating in a satisfactory manner that important branch of ceramic art. The result has been that a considerable number Of additional examples have been acquired, which it has been thought desirable to add to the collection ex hibited, forming in all a series of about specimens. In order, however, not to disarrange the existing numbers, and to leave the first edition useful as far as it goes, the additional descriptions are printed as a supplement, under the classes previously adopted, and the plates have been numbered on at the end of the Old series, excepting that the plates of symbols and ornaments have been formed into a separate series from the marks, so as to keep each class together. I have taken advantage of the republication to make various corrections in the previous catalogue, and especially in the descriptions of the marks. In this section I am indebted to Dr. Bushell of Her Britannic Majesty's legation at Pekin for several corrections and explanations. In October 1860, at the culmination of the Second Opium War, British and French troops looted and destroyed one of the most important palace complexes in imperial China—the Yuanmingyuan. Known in the West as the "Summer Palace," this site consisted of thousands of buildings housing a vast art collection. It is estimated that over a million objects may have been taken from the palaces in the Yuanmingyuan—and many of these are now scattered around the world, in private collections and public museums. With contributions from leading specialists, this is the first book to focus on the collecting and display of "Summer Palace" material over the past 150 years in museums in Britain and France. This book presents the first comprehensive study of the collecting, consumption and display of Chinese porcelain in Britain from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as the impact of this activity on British culture. Beginning with the early porcelains acquired as objects of exotica and vessels for the consumption of tea and coffee, followed by porcelains for display in the country house interior, the first part of this book reveals the role of porcelain in Britain's developing economic relations with China and the impact of this material on both daily life and interior design. The subsequent diplomatic and political conflicts of the 18th and 19th centuries provide a framework for an examination of British consumption of Chinese porcelain as both spoils of war and iconic representations of China, material which helped to shape and influence British perceptions of China. The final section demonstrates how these perceptions of China and its porcelain began to change significantly in the 20th century with porcelains acquired as works of art and displayed publicly in museums. Collectors in Britain began to specialise in this area and actively invented a 'field' of Chinese ceramics that was promulgated by learned societies and culminated in the founding of a museum of Chinese ceramics in London by one of the foremost British collectors, Sir Percival David, who donated his world class collection to the University of London in 1950.
