Children's Book Prizes by Ruth Allen Pdf

First published in 1998, this book is the first comprehensive survey of the awards made to children’s books in the English-speaking world. The Volume covers nearly forty different prizes including well-known and established ones such as the Newbury Award, prizes instigated by the commercial sector such as the Smarties Prize, as well as nationally sponsored awards and prizes for illustrators. Detailed lists are provided of the winning titles and, where appropriate, the runners-up in each year that the award has been given. Ruth Allen also presents some fascinating and often entertaining insights into the motivations behind awards and how they are views by authors, illustrators, publishers, librarians, booksellers and potential purchasers. The various criteria applied by judges of these awards are also examined, with an assessment of whether they have always achieved the ‘right’ result. This Volume is both a useful guide for adults wishing to buy good books for children and an important tool for those researching the history of the children’s book industry.

The Killer's Tears by Anne-Laure Bondoux Pdf

On the afternoon when Angel Allegria arrives at the Poloverdos’ farmhouse, he kills the farmer and his wife. But he spares their child, Paolo–a young boy who will claim this as the day on which he was born. Together the killer and the boy begin a new life on this remote and rugged stretch of land in Chile. Then Luis Secunda, a well-to-do and educated fellow from the city descends upon them. Paolo is caught in the paternal rivalry between the two men. But life resumes its course . . . until circumstances force the three to leave the farm. In doing so, Angel and Luis confront their pasts as well as their inevitable destinies–destinies that profoundly shape Paolo’s own future.

Children's Books by Children's Book Council (New York, N.Y.) Pdf

For the first time since 1996 and since the launch of Awards & Prizes Online in 2003, a print edition of Children?s Books: Awards & Prizes (Children?s Book Council, 0-933633-07-6, $150, December 2005) is available to libraries, schools, bookstores, and the general public. This new edition of Children?s Books: Awards & Prizes, the eleventh since 1960, follows the format of the previous edition, published in 1996. It contains 288 awards and prizes, in four sections: United States Awards Selected by Adults; United States Awards Selected by Young Readers; Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and United Kingdom Awards; and Selected International and Multinational Awards. Thirty-three awards listed in the 1996 edition have since been renamed. Previous names are noted in the award descriptions. Twenty-eight awards listed in the 1996 edition are not included in this print edition. These awards include any awards terminated prior to the year 2000.One-hundred and three awards have been added since the 1996 edition. Many of these are new awards initiated since 1996, but many are well-established prizes. The CBC was able to make this large increase in the number of awards and prizes tracked due to advances in technology. Organizational websites regularly post such information, and awards announcements arrive in CBC e-mail inboxes on a regular basis. However, the biggest leap in the use of technology was made by the CBC itself. The details of all of these awards, including the ones no longer included in this print edition, are tracked in an online, dynamic database called Awards & Prizes Online.Awards & Prizes Online combines the comprehensive information of the print edition with the flexibility of a dynamic database. It is fully searchable by author or illustrator, book title, award title, publisher, keywords, and grade level or age level. A one-year subscription to Awards & Prizes Online is $150, and a one-day subscription is $9.95. The print edition and a one-year subscription can be purchased together for $200. Please visit awardsandprizes.cbcbooks.org for more information. The CBC is pleased to make this print-on-demand edition available to the children?s book community. It is up-to-date through September 2005 and will be updated annually.

The Jane Addams Children's Book Award by Susan C. Griffith Pdf

Jane Addams (1860–1935) was an inspired activist who struck at the roots of social injustice through persistent and thoughtful action, advocating for reforms in sanitation, housing and work conditions, and child labor. In 1915 Addams founded the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), and in 1931 she became the first American female recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Eighteen years after Addams’s death, members of the WILPF created the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award. Presented annually, the award honors children’s books that invite readers to think deeply about peace, social justice, world community, and equality for all races and genders. The Jane Addams Children’s Book Award: Honoring Children’s Literature for Peace and Social Justice since 1953 is the first book to examine the award as well as its winners and honor books. In this volume, Susan C. Griffith reviews and synthesizes Addams’s ideas and legacy, so that her life and accomplishments can be used as a focal point for exploring issues of social justice through children’s literature. In addition to a history and overview of the award, this work contains annotated bibliographies with thematically arranged winners and honor books bestowed in Addams’s name. Supporting literature study in classrooms and integrating points of reflection drawn from the activist’s life, The Jane Addams Children’s Book Award is an invaluable resource for educators, students, and librarians.

Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly Pdf

Winner of the Newbery Medal “A charming, intriguingly plotted novel.”—Washington Post Newbery Medalist Erin Entrada Kelly’s Hello, Universe is a funny and poignant neighborhood story about unexpected friendships. Told from four intertwining points of view—two boys and two girls—the novel celebrates bravery, being different, and finding your inner bayani (hero). “Readers will be instantly engrossed in this relatable neighborhood adventure and its eclectic cast of misfits.”—Booklist In one day, four lives weave together in unexpected ways. Virgil Salinas is shy and kindhearted and feels out of place in his crazy-about-sports family. Valencia Somerset, who is deaf, is smart, brave, and secretly lonely, and she loves everything about nature. Kaori Tanaka is a self-proclaimed psychic, whose little sister, Gen, is always following her around. And Chet Bullens wishes the weird kids would just stop being so different so he can concentrate on basketball. They aren’t friends, at least not until Chet pulls a prank that traps Virgil and his pet guinea pig at the bottom of a well. This disaster leads Kaori, Gen, and Valencia on an epic quest to find missing Virgil. Through luck, smarts, bravery, and a little help from the universe, a rescue is performed, a bully is put in his place, and friendship blooms. The acclaimed and award-winning author of Blackbird Fly and The Land of Forgotten Girls writes with an authentic, humorous, and irresistible tween voice that will appeal to fans of Thanhha Lai and Rita Williams-Garcia. “Readers across the board will flock to this book that has something for nearly everyone—humor, bullying, self-acceptance, cross-generational relationships, and a smartly fateful ending.”—School Library Journal
