This collection consists of ten papers presented at the All-Union School on Function Theory, held in Dushanbe in August 1986, under the editor's guidance. The book encompasses a wide range of current directions in the metric theory of functions, the theory of approximation of functions, and related parts of mathematical analysis. The papers concern the following topics: extremal properties of functions, representation of functions by series, convergence of multiple Fourier series, approximation of functions by trigonometric polymonials in Lp-metrics, widths of classes of functions, approximation of functions by Fourier sums in systems of characters of zero-dimensional compact commutative groups, bilinear approximations of functions, the study of Tchebycheff sets in normed linear spaces, and spline approximation of functions of several variables. Among the results obtained are: new criteria for convexity of Tchebycheff sets in terms of continuity properties of the metric projection operator; conditions on the character of integrability of a periodic function of several variables under which its Fourier series converges to it in measure; a characterization of representation systems for symmetric spaces in which there are no nonzero continuous functionals.

This conference (a satellite meeting of the ICM) gave an opportunity to many friends and colleagues from all over the world to honour him. This academic community is very large. The scientific field of Prof. Maz'ya is impressively broad, which is reflected in the variety of contributions included in the volumes. Vladimir Maz'ya is the author and co-author of many publications (see the list of publications at the end of this volume), the topics of which extend from functional analysis, function theory and numerical analysis to partial differential equations and their broad applications. Vladimir G. Maz'ya provided significant contributions, among others to the the ory of Sobolev spaces, the capacity theory, boundary integral methods, qualitative and asymptotic methods of analysis of linear and nonlinear elliptic differential equations, the Cauchy problem for elliptic and hyperbolic equations, the theory of multipliers in spaces of differentiable functions, maximum principles for elliptic and parabolic systems, and boundary value problems in domains with piecewise smooth boundaries. R. S. PHILLIPS I am very gratified to have been asked to give this introductory talk for our honoured guest, Israel Gohberg. I should like to begin by spending a few minutes talking shop. One of the great tragedies of being a mathematician is that your papers are read so seldom. On the average ten people will read the introduction to a paper and perhaps two of these will actually study the paper. It's difficult to know how to deal with this problem. One strategy which will at least get you one more reader, is to collaborate with someone. I think Israel early on caught on to this, and I imagine that by this time most of the analysts in the world have collaborated with him. He continues relentlessly in this pursuit; he visits his neighbour Harry Dym at the Weizmann Institute regularly, he spends several months a year in Amsterdam working with Rien Kaashoek, several weeks in Maryland with Seymour Goldberg, a couple of weeks here in Calgary with Peter Lancaster, and on the rare occasions when he is in Tel Aviv, he takes care of his many students.
