A Companion to Clare of Assisi by Joan Mueller Pdf

Clare of Assisi: Life, Writings and Spirituality examines Clare not merely as an obedient footnote to the friars, but as a Franciscan founder in her own right who kept primitive Franciscan ideals alive into the middle of the thirteenth century and transposed them into a woman s key. Bringing together the best of international research, the text examines Clare s importance within the early Franciscan milieu and her contribution to the thirteenth-century women's movement. It studies the radicalism of Clare's Franciscan choice, her life within the Monastery of San Damiano, her politicking with Agnes of Prague for the privilege of poverty," and her uniqueness among other women in Gregory IX's Damianite ordo. Following this historical study are critical translations and literary analyses of Clare's four letters to Agnes of Prague as well as a new translation and commentary on Clare s Forma Vitae."

A Companion to the Monastic Breviary by Cameron Ackerman,Gerhard Eger Pdf

T]he Monastic Breviary, the last edition of which this Companion deftly introduces, faithfully hands on the sixth century liturgical tradition of Saint Benedict himself which has sustained classical monastic life and prayer ever since. Its renewed popularity in our times... is surely a sign of God's Providence, of the springing-up of a beautiful and fruitful plant in the spiritually and liturgically arid times in which we live... Rubrics and calendars and tables of feasts can be daunting, but they serve to protect and convey the riches of the tradition they serve... Hence the painstaking work of the Companion's editors should occasion our gratitude, for if through their efforts the riches of the Monastic Breviary can be plumbed all the more profoundly, or even discovered anew, they will have done much indeed to assist us to 'put nothing before the Work of God' (Rule Ch. 43) so that Almighty God may be justly glorified, for in so doing lies nothing less than our salvation. - Dom Alcuin Reid, Monastère Saint-Benoît, Brignoles What does this book include? A first ever translation of the Latin rubrics of the 1963 Mo]nastic Breviary as translated by the editors of A Companion to the Monastic Breviary, and a unique Commentary on the Monastic Hours. Part 1: Liturgical Documents including: General Rubrics, General Rubrics of the Breviary, The Year and its Parts, and Revised Table of Movable Feasts Part 2: Commentary and Explanation: Of the rubrics, Of the spiritual meaning of each hour, and Of the historical development of each hour.

Cloister and Community by Mary Jo Weaver Pdf

Cloister and Community is both a history of the Carmelite monastery of Indianapolis and an introduction to the Carmelites, a contemplative order of Roman Catholicism, founded in the 13th century and rededicated as a reform movement for women religious in the 16th century by Teresa of Avila. A key element of the order is that its nuns live an ascetic, cloistered life, but as Mary Jo Weaver demonstrates, the view that one must "leave the world" to find sacred space apart from it has evolved to embrace the notion that the world itself is a sacred space.Weaver focuses on a modern Indianapolis community and describes how the sisters incorporate Carmelite belief and practice into their daily lives. Cloister and Community is a beautifully written and handsomely produced book that offers readers a privileged view of the world of present-day contemplative spirituality.ALSO OF INTEREST Being RightConservative Catholics in AmericaEdited by Mary Jo Weaver and R. Autobiography of an Old Breviary by Herman J. Heuser Pdf

A book is a book, and a very good thing, for all the wisdom and knowledge that makes up its contents. Books are common, everyday tools of leisure, education, and prayer; but not every book is a common thing - the Holy Bible is certainly an extraordinary one; and so too the Breviary of the Catholic priest is a very great book, having its roots in Holy Scripture itself. The breviary is the lifetime companion of the priest. It is his first act in the morning to open its pages and begin the day with prayer. It is his last act in the evening, to finish the day's prescribed reading and prayers from it. We may hear priestly conversation on the subject of the breviary, but did you ever wonder what a breviary, may reflect about itself? Chances are that no, not many have sat and contemplated what the life of a breviary might have held; and this is why The Autobiography of an Old Breviary is an interesting speculative read; and the author makes it quite entertaining. To educate and inspire the reader, Rev. Herman J. Heuser amusingly writes in the first person the "character" of a Totum Roman Breviary, or complete breviary. This character is high-minded, being a Totum and not just an abbreviated prayer book, and begins with a complaint at having been shelved at assumedly nearing the end of its life. "Sometimes," says the Totum, "I have been in the hands of clerics who just treated me as if I were nothing but a common prayer-book, or a school manual which one wants to get through with as quickly as possible. But the professor knew better." The professor here is the Totum's inseparable companion, the Padre. Likening a priest and breviary to be a couple, working through the hardships of life together, much of the complaint of the Totum is that it is being treated ill compared to its high value, and set aside much as a wife might complain about her husband for being preoccupied or set aside for other persons. The "Voice" of the Breviary speaks more than the story would relate, which is a pleasant read to say the least. Yet it goes further to uncover the deep reverence one must hold for the Roman Breviary itself, and its relationship with the priest, and indeed all the faithful. The author states in the introduction that the main purpose for the title is the encouragement and benefit of the priest, who by reading will be inspired with a greater devotion and love for his duty toward the Divine Office. The book does well to detail the Hebrew origins of the Catholic liturgy, and spends a good deal of time doing so. It is a very exact and well-referenced study, relating the psalms by name and their use in both the Hebrew worship and the Catholic, and explaining their fittingness and meaning of use. Autobiography of an Old Breviary is a cherished read, once begun. In the process of reading this title, the reader gains: - A complete history of the Roman Breviary - An Apologia for the Faith, Priesthood, and Catholic interpretation of the Bible - In-depth detail of the linguistics of the Church - An excellent explanation of the Church's liturgy and culture through the Kalendorium - A brief instruction on how to follow the Breviary with description of its parts - A greater devotion in the recitation of the breviary

Eastertide by Phyllis Tickle Pdf

In her acclaimed trilogy, The Divine Hours, Phyllis Tickle introduced modern Christians to the time-honored practice of "praying the hours." In this exquisite new volume, she provides a vibrant program of prayer dedicated to the anticipation of Christ’s resurrection. Beginning with Ash Wednesday and moving through Lent and on to Easter Sunday, Eastertide provides the daily prayers that bring practitioners into the full spirit of this season. Each day is filled with psalms, readings from the Bible, and hymns of praise and worship, just as they appear in the larger volume, The Divine Hours: Prayers for Springtime. Newcomers to this beloved tradition will find that Eastertide is the perfect introduction to joining the ancients in the tradition of fixed-hour prayer. "A wise rabbi once told me that it is not how many prayers we don’t say that matters to God, but rather how many we do. That is important to all of us, but especially for beginners. If this is your first attempt to return to this most ancient of Christian practices, it is wise to remember that you are entering into a discipline and, like all disciplines, this one sits hard and heavy upon one at times. There are hours you will miss and/or some that you can’t even begin to figure out how to observe. That is all right, for either the joy will carry you into greater joy and transmute the discipline into privilege, or you will find yourself simply the wiser and the richer for such experience as you have had. As the rabbi said, that is what matters ultimately."
