Brothers of a Vow by Ami Pflugrad-Jackisch Pdf

In Brothers of a Vow, Ami Pflugrad-Jackisch examines secret fraternal organizations in antebellum Virginia to offer fresh insight into masculinity and the redefinition of social and political roles of white men in the South. Young Virginians who came of age during the antebellum era lived through a time of tremendous economic, cultural, and political upheaval. In a state increasingly pulled between the demands of the growing market and the long-established tradition of unfree labor, Pflugrad-Jackisch argues that groups like the Freemasons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Sons of Temperance promoted market-oriented values and created bonds among white men that softened class distinctions. At the same time, these groups sought to stabilize social hierarchies that subordinated blacks and women. Pflugrad-Jackisch examines all aspects of the secret orders--including their bylaws and proceedings, their material culture and regalia, and their participation in a wide array of festivals, parades, and civic celebrations. Regarding gender, she shows how fraternal orders helped reinforce an alternative definition of southern white manhood that emphasized self-discipline, moral character, temperance, and success at work. These groups ultimately established a civic brotherhood among white men that marginalized the role of women in the public sphere and bolstered the respectability of white men regardless of class status. Brothers of a Vow is a nuanced look at how dominant groups craft collective identities, and it adds to our understanding of citizenship and political culture during a period of rapid change.

Stratham by Helen LaFave Pdf

Through carefully selected images, Stratham tells the story of a rural town prior to suburban development. Surrounded by Greenland, North Hampton, Exeter, and Newfields, Stratham has some of the finest farmland in New Hampshire, longtime thriving river commerce on the Swampscott, and road access from early Colonial times. Discover an earlier Stratham in this unique and engaging pictorial collection. Since the 17th century, generations of the same families lived and worked in the community. Barkers, Chapmans, Chases, Gowens, Scammans, and Wiggins, among others, farmed the rich land, built mills, fished, raised and traded livestock, developed a resort, and organized a vital civic life in Stratham. The early residents built schools and a library, held community social functions, and formed a still-existing volunteer fire department. Located between the two early capitals of Portsmouth and Exeter, road, rail, and water transportation linked Stratham to the world. The images in this volume depict all aspects of community life and feature such public monuments as the 1916 town founding Bicentennial Parade, and the long-gone resort, the Elms.

Civic Engagement in American Democracy by Theda Skocpol,Morris P. Fiorina Pdf

American democracy is in many ways more vital than ever before. Advocacy groups proliferate and formerly marginalized groups enjoy new opportunities. But worrisome trends exist. Millions of Americans are drawing back from involvements with community affairs and politics. Voters stay home; public officials grapple with distrust or indifference; and people are less likely to cooperate on behalf of shared goals. Observers across the spectrum of opinion agree that it is vital to determine what is happening and why—so that Americans can take well-informed, effective steps to revitalize our national community. The book opens with an eagle-eye look at the roots of America's special patterns of civic engagement, examining the ways social groups and government and electoral politics have influenced each other. Other chapters examine the impact of advocacy groups and socioeconomic inequalities on democratic processes and probe the influence of long-term social and cultural changes on voluntary associations and civic participation. The book concludes by asking why social liberation has been accompanied by new inequalities and the erosion of many important forms of citizen leverage and participation. Coming together from several disciplines, contributors include Jeffrey M. Berry, Henry E. Brady, John Brehm, Steven Brint, Elisabeth S. Clemens, Peter Dobkin Hall, Wendy M. Rahn, Kay Lehman Schlozman, Sidney Verba, and Robert Wuthnow. Copublished with the Russell Sage Foundation
