The Cambridge History of Christianity by Augustine Casiday,Frederick W. Norris Pdf

This volume in the Cambridge History of Christianity presents the 'Golden Age' of patristic Christianity. After episodes of persecution by the Roman government, Christianity emerged as a licit religion enjoying imperial patronage and eventually became the favoured religion of the empire. The articles in this volume discuss the rapid transformation of Christianity during late antiquity, giving specific consideration to artistic, social, literary, philosophical, political, inter-religious and cultural aspects. The volume moves away from simple dichotomies and reductive schematizations (e.g., 'heresy v. orthodoxy') toward an inclusive description of the diverse practices and theories that made up Christianity at this time. Whilst proportional attention is given to the emergence of the Great Church within the Roman Empire, other topics are treated as well - such as the development of Christian communities outside the empire.

Europe After Rome by Julia M. H. Smith Pdf

The 500 years following the collapse of the Roman Empire is still popularly perceived as Europe's 'Dark Ages', marked by barbarism and uniformity. Julia Smith's masterly book sweeps away this view, and instead illuminates a time of great vitality and cultural diversity. Through a combination of cultural history, regional studies, and gender history, she shows how men and women at all levels of society ordered their world, and she allows them to speak to the reader directly in their. own words. This is the first single-author study in over fifty years to offer an integrated appraisal of all asp.

The Barbarian Plain by Elizabeth Key Fowden Pdf

"Fowden brings the studies of many earlier scholars to a welcome fruition in the synthetic portrait she paints of an important cult and its local expression in one of the most volatile areas of late antiquity. Fowden has written an excellent book, and all of us will be its beneficiaries."—Sidney H. Griffith, The Catholic University of America

Charles Pettigrew, First Bishop-Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church (Classic Reprint) by Bennett H. Wall Pdf

Excerpt from Charles Pettigrew, First Bishop-Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church As soon as he received the news of his appointment, Pettigrew resigned his position in Bute County and moved to Edenton. He became a member of the Church of England about this time and obtained a position as lay reader of St. Paul's Church in Edenton. Since several members of the vestry of St. Paul's Parish were trustees of the academy, it is reasonable to assume that he had contacted these men and made known to them his desire to become a minister of the Church of England. Whether or not that View is correct, it is known that while occupying the positions of schoolmaster and lay reader he engaged in the studies expected of candidates for ordination in that church. In the spring of 1775 he sailed for London where he was duly ordained deacon and priest by the bishops of London and Rochester. The Life of the Syrian Saint Barsauma by Anonim Pdf

Andrew N. Palmer’s vivid translation of the Syriac Life of Barsauma opens a fascinating window onto the ancient Middle East, seen through the life and actions of one of its most dramatic and ambiguous characters: the monk Barsauma, ascetic hero to some, religious terrorist to others. The Life takes us into the eye of the storm that raged around Christian attempts to define the nature of Christ in the great Council of Chalcedon, the effect of which was to split the growing Church irrevocably, with the Oriental Orthodox on one side and Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic on the other. Previously known only in extracts, this ancient text is now finally brought to readers in its entirety, casting dramatic new light on the relations among pagans, Jews, and Christians in the Holy Land and on the role of religious violence, real or imagined, in the mental world of a Middle East as shot through with conflict as it is today.

Empire to Commonwealth by Garth Fowden Pdf

In this bold approach to late antiquity, Garth Fowden shows how, from the second-century peak of Rome's prosperity to the ninth-century onset of the Islamic Empire's decline, powerful beliefs in One God were used to justify and strengthen "world empires." But tensions between orthodoxy and heresy that were inherent in monotheism broke the unitary empires of Byzantium and Baghdad into the looser, more pluralistic commonwealths of Eastern Christendom and Islam. With rare breadth of vision, Fowden traces this transition from empire to commonwealth, and in the process exposes the sources of major cultural contours that still play a determining role in Europe and southwest Asia.
