George C. Marshall: Organizer of Victory, 1943-1945 by Forrest C. Pogue Pdf

“This [volume] covers the Allied shift to the offensive in early 1943 to the defeat of Germany in May 1945. During this period, the indomitable Chief of Staff gained growing respect and trust from Roosevelt and Churchill and unparalleled respect from Congress and the country. The profound differences with our British Allies, the selection of Eisenhower to command the invasion force, the Mac-Arthur-Nimitz feud in the Pacific, the machinations at Yalta, the decision not to try to beat the Russians to Berlin, and the establishment of the occupation zones are covered in detail.” — The Military Engineer “The years 1943-45 were years of fulfillment, during which the greatest of American Chiefs of Staff saw the army that he had raised committed to the struggle against the Axis, in accordance with the strategical plan that he had devised and persuaded his allies to accept... there is little doubt that the decision [to keep Marshall in Washington and send Eisenhower to command the 1944 Normandy invasion] was fortunate for the nation, and Mr. Pogue’s substantial volume is filled with material to show why this was so... [a] rewarding volume.” — Gordon A. Craig, The New York Times “For those who wish to understand the American war effort, this is the place to begin... Also the book for those who want to meet an old-fashioned hero... In sum, a magnificent book about a magnificent man.” — Stephen E. Ambrose, Washington Post “An outstanding example of modern biography.” — Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times “This book is a careful, sensitive evaluation of an individual whose contribution to the Allied victory in World War II was unsurpassed. In addition, it is a fine description of the events and personalities of that conflict. As such, this book is a valuable addition to the literature of recent military history.” — David J. Alvarez, Military Affairs “In this [volume], scholars see Marshall at his best as soldier and statesman and Pogue at his best as biographer and historian. The product of this happy combination is a basic and indispensable work on World War II... It will be difficult to equal, let alone surpass, the excellence of this volume.” — Harry L. Coles, The Journal of American History “The best volume of biography I have ever been privileged to read... If any student of the future, or any citizen for that matter, can read but one book in his effort to get a clear understanding of the most climactic period in our history, this is the one.” — Ira Eaker, Aerospace Historian “This is biography at its best... A first-rate history of the two climactic years of the war... One of the best works yet written about the war. It is global in scope, deeply researched, thorough, written with clarity and forcefulness...” — Louis Morton, The American Historical Review “Pogue provides a well-documented and readable account of [Marshall’s] career from 1943-45... Pogue makes an important contribution to World War II historiography.” — John M. Carroll, The Review of Politics “For understanding the great decisions and personalities of the war that began the Cold War, this may be the most stimulating and the most indispensable book. Marshall would be proud of what Pogue has written, not because it is favorable but because it is fair.” — Noel F. Parrish, The Journal of Southern History “[An] excellent account... Pogue does [Marshall] justice.” — Willard F. Barber, Military Affairs “The... surely definitive George C. Marshall biography... a heavily documented text which incorporates or quotes from the Marshall papers and related material... the emphasis on the professional career continues while still attempting to build a portrait of the human being behind the braid... this continues the detailed, stately march through that calm, dedicated, supersubstantial call to national service which here ends with the German surrender in May of 1945 but is to be continued on the diplomatic shoals.” — Kirkus Reviews “Military historian Pogue... tops his previous fine efforts... with this superb study of his subject at the turning point of humankind’s greatest armed conflict... This is biography at its best... Pogue’s talent is exceeded only by his ability to write as forcefully and interestingly as any first-ranked novelist. The result is a biography which crackles with exciting drama and makes reading it not only an intellectually profitable experience but one that is also pleasurable... An epochal mural of a world at war... An outstanding and eminently readable biography...” — Princeton Alumni Weekly “Pogue is to be applauded. The book is indispensable to an understanding of the war and to an appreciation of the part played by Marshall and others in the unfolding drama.” — Armin Rappaport, Pacific Historical Review “Splendid... A superb biography.” — John F. Melby, Pacific Affairs “This is really the record not just of one great war but of an infinity of little wars.” — New York Post

George Marshall by Debi Unger,Irwin Unger Pdf

“Elegant and iconoclastic . . . refreshing . . . persuasive.”—NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW Here is the first biography to offer a complete picture of the life of George C. Marshall, chief of staff of the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1945 and the military leader who actually ran World War II for America as he oversaw all personnel and logistics. Following Marshall from his childhood in western Pennsylvania and his training at the Virginia Military Institute to his role during and after World War II and his death in 1959 at the age of seventy-eight, this biography casts light on the inspiration he took from historical role models, such as George Washington and Robert E. Lee, and his relationships with military brass, the Washington political establishment, and world leaders, from Harry Truman to Chiang Kai-shek. It also explores Marshall’s triumphs and defeats during World War II, and his contributions through two critical years of the emerging Cold War—including the transformative Marshall Plan, which saved Western Europe from Soviet domination, and his failed attempt to unite China’s Nationalists and Communists. Based on exhaustive research and filled with rich detail, George Marshall is sure to be hailed as the definitive work on one of the most influential figures in American history. “A grand but judicious biography of a fascinating man.”—Evan Thomas, author of Ike’s Bluff

The Papers of George Catlett Marshall by George Catlett Marshall Pdf

The two years covered in the fifth volume of The Papers of George Catlett Marshall were among the most momentous in the life of Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall—and in the course of the twentieth century. A year of transitions for Marshall, 1945 witnessed the final assault on Nazi Germany and the use of atomic weapons against Japan. Allied forces under the command of Marshall's protege, Dwight D. Eisenhower, had contained Hitler's Ardennes offensive at the beginning of the year and launched the final drive to smash the German regime. The war against Japan seemed far from over, however, and Marshall was deeply involved in planning for the massive and difficult redeployment of troops and materials from Europe to the Pacific. The debate with the U.S. Navy over supreme command of the invasion of Japan continued through the first six months of the year until Marshall secured Douglas A. MacArthur's appointment. In May and June, the chief of staff was involved in the decision to use the new atom bomb. Military-related political problems continued to consume much of Marshall's time as the Second World War drew to a close, although he was only peripherally involved in the Big Three conferences at Yalta and Potsdam. Instead, demobilization and readying U.S. Army ground and air forces for the postwar era were Marshall's chief concerns. He pressed for a unified military department against navy opposition and also lobbied incessantly for universal military training for all physically fit eighteen-year-old males as the key element in the nation's military readiness and deterrent value. After the fighting ceased, Marshall expected to retire, having served on active duty since 1902, but President Truman kept him in office until late November 1945. The day after his retirement, the president asked him to go to China to mediate in that country's increasingly violent civil war. Despite his initial success in negotiating a cease-fire between the Nationalists and Communists, irreconcilable differences soon led to renewed fighting. Marshall's continued hopes for achieving a political compromise, along with knowledge that his mission was the only hope for avoiding a disaster in China, kept him in the country until early 1947. He returned to the United States only when the president announced that General Marshall would join his cabinet as secretary of state. From The Papers of George Catlett Marshall "The one great element in continuing the success of an offensive is maintaining the momentum. This was lost last fall when shortages caused by the limitation of port facilities made it impossible for us to get sufficient supplies to the armies to continue their sweep into Germany when they approached the German border. Once additional ports had been captured and reopened there was a shortage of rail and transportation facilities with which to get supplies forward. Now the port facilities and the interior supply lines are adequate. Subject to the worldwide shortage of both cargo and personnel shipping, there is no foreseeable shortage which will be imposed by physical events in the field."—Speech to the Overseas Press Club, March 1, 1945 "Today we celebrate a great victory, a day of solemn thanksgiving. My admiration and gratitude go first to those who have fallen, and to the men of the American armies of the air and ground whose complete devotion to duty and indomitable courage have overcome the enemy and every conceivable obstacle in achieving this historic victory."—Marshall V-E Day Radio Address, May 8, 1945

George C. Marshall, Soldier of Peace by James Barber,Larry I. Bland,National Portrait Gallery (Smithsonian Institution) Pdf

George C. Marshall served as chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff during World War II and as secretary of state during the rebuilding of Europe. A master of mobilization and organization, he did as much as any national leader in achieving Allied victory in the war; afterward, as architect of the Marshall Plan, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for that massive and highly effective effort on behalf of Western European economic recovery. Winston Churchill called him "the noblest Roman of them all." This colorful collection of Marshal portraiture and memorabilia commemorates and humanizes this giant of a man, about whom comparatively little beyond his career achievements is known. The book will accompany an exhibit on Marshall that will open at the National Portrait Gallery in November 1997. "He was certainly no flamboyant general, he was not a character, there were no pearl-handled revolvers or corncob pipes of crusty anecdotes to spice up the legend of Marshall. He never wrote a book to tell his story. He never ran for election to public office. He never sought popularity. He never exploited his fame. He never asked for recognition or favors. He was a man driven more than anything else by a sense of duty, by the powerful, overpowering obligation of service. To him, it was never George C. Marshall that was important; it was the task at hand." -- Colin Powell Distributed for the National Portrait Gallery
