Recent Advances in North American Paleoseismology and Neotectonics East of the Rockies by Randel Tom Cox Pdf

"This volume focuses on the continental intraplate region of the United States and provides an update and overview of documented Quaternary faulting and paleoseismic liquefaction east of the Rocky Mountains, and of the application of these results to seismic hazard and risk assessments. Contributions include papers that describe zones of newly recognized Quaternary deformation such as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, as well as reinterpretations of well-known areas such as the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The chapters make important contributions to the recognition of earthquake sources active during the Quaternary and assess the seismic hazards posed by these sources. This volume should interest a wide range of readers from geology, seismology, hazard assessment, and emergency management"--Provided by publisher.

An Eclectic Guide to Trees East of the Rockies by Glen Blouin Pdf

"The scope of this book is biological rather than political," writes author Glen Blouin. "It is neither a Native Trees of Canada, nor a Native Trees of the United States. Trees are apolitical characters. They do not recognize international boundaries. They grow where they are comfortable, where the climate and soils suit them." This one-of-a-kind book is certainly an excellent guide to identifying the almost fifty major tree species east of the Rockies by their components (size, wood, bark, leaf, flower, fruit, twig, etc.), but it goes far beyond such basic details. It also provides: the history of each species its range, record sizes, preferred sites, and seasonal changes its value as habitat for fauna its role in interspecies interaction its natural enemies (insects, blights, diseases) its use by humans as ornamentals, shade trees, or windbreaks its historic and modern use as a source of food or medicine the properties of its wood for woodworking, and other domestic and industrial use recommendations for planting and care and important notes on conservation "This thoughtful book by Glen Blouin nicely explores the broader significance of tree species found east of the Rockies, in Canada and the United States. It expands on all that interesting information that is only touched upon through a sentence or two in standard field guides ... Every forest is a treasure house of such knowledge if we only have a companion such as this book to help us gain access." from the foreword by Monte Hummel, President, World Wildlife Fund, Canada

The Definitive Journals of Lewis & Clark: Over the Rockies to St. Louis by Meriwether Lewis,William Clark,Gary E. Moulton,Thomas W. Dunlay Pdf

Since the time of Columbus, explorers dreamed of a water passage across the North American continent. President Thomas Jefferson shared this dream. He conceived the Corps of Discovery to travel up the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and westward along possible river routes to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led this expedition of 1804?6. Along the way they filled hundreds of notebook pages with observations of the geography, Indian tribes, and natural history of the trans-Mississippi West. This last volume recounts the expedition's experiences as they continued their journey homeward from present-day Idaho and the party divided for separate exploration. Lewis probed the northern extent of the Louisiana Purchase on the Marias River, while Clark traveled southeast toward the Yellowstone to explore the river and make contact with local Indians. Lewis's party suffered from bad luck: they encountered grizzlies, horse thieves, and the expedition's only violent encounter with Native inhabitants, the Piegan Blackfeet. Lewis was also wounded in a hunting accident. The two parties eventually reunited below the mouth of the Yellowstone and arrived back in St. Louis to a triumphal welcome in September 1806.

On his later excursions, the author has gone alone and without firearms. He has also scaled many of the higher peaks of the Rockies and made many studies on the upper slopes of these mountains.

The Rockies by David Sievert Lavender Pdf

From the time of Coronado?s discovery to the era of modern ski resorts and sport climbing routes, adventurers have been lured irresistibly to the Rocky Mountains. In this book distinguished writer David Lavender traces the colorful history of the Rockies, focusing on the period that began in 1859 with the first gold strikes. The real and fabled attractions of gold, silver, furs, lumber, and lead brought swarms of people into the mountains, eagerly seeking wealth. A get-rich-quick spirit pervaded the Rockies, leading to lawlessness, violence, vigilantism, and political expediency. The Rockies is particularly revealing about the struggles which resulted in codes peculiar to the mountainous West. Duane A. Smith provides a new introduction to this Bison Books edition of The Rockies.
