It surveys the reasons behind the levels of US trade and investment, and considers the impact of the presence of both British governments and businesses on the US-Malayan relationship. The book goes on to examine the impact of US trade and investment on Malaya, with detailed analysis of the cases of three important US inward investors: Yukon Gold Company, United States Rubber Company, and Ford Motor Company. The author argues that the British colonial presence provided an infrastructure that facilitated US trade and FDI flows with Malaya, although on occasion restrictive policies followed by the colonial government diverted US FDI flows elsewhere. However, US FDI and trade remained constrained by Malaya’s status as a low income developing country with little potential for market-oriented manufacturing investment. Nonetheless, it demonstrates that US trade and FDI had a positive impact on the Malayan economy through flows of organisational and technological capabilities. An epilogue brings the story up to date for contemporary US-Malaysian economic relations. Charting the Economy assesses the course of Malayas commodity-dependent economy during the first 40 years of the 20th century under British colonial control, contrasting it with economic growth and development in contemporary Malaysia. Drawing on archival documents to derive estimates of Malayas GDP and analysing trends, it breaks new ground in understanding the dynamics of economic performance. In the first half of the 20th century, the Malay Peninsula, like much of Southeast Asia, was under colonial rule. Colonialism facilitated the control of lands, institutions and peoples, as well as the exploitation of natural resources. Malayas economy was largely agrarian, supported by two primary commodity pillarstin and rubberproduced to meet the needs of the industries and people in Europe and North America. Sultan Nazrin Shah eloquently articulates how the economy rode a commodity roller-coaster. Being small and open, it was exceedingly vulnerable to external cyclical shocksWorld War I (19141918), the Roaring Twenties (19201929), and the Great Depression (19291932)which were the main causes of economic booms and busts. This book makes a compelling case that the colonial laissez-faire economic system worked well for the agency houses that repatriated huge profits but paid small dividends to the masses. Development was highly uneven, with growth and prosperity concentrated in and benefiting the Peninsulas west coast states, where most of the tin mines and rubber plantations were located. After independence, national control over economic management was accompanied by a long-term vision for a socially just nation. Real GDP growth in post-independence Malaysia brought rapid advances in standards of living.

In the premodern history traded goods were in particular spices, tin and rubber. But the long-term colonial rule and the occupation of the Japanese in World War II didn’t let the economy rise. But Today Malaysia can be regarded as one of the most successful asian countries which achieved a really effective transition into a modern economy. The most important reason for this change were the consequent policies of the Malaysian government since the 1970s. It was able to integrate the ethnic outsider, the Malay, into the society and economy. Through its development programs it was possible to get rid of the high poverty rate, to built up much more equality in the society and create a well working economy with annual growth rates. Malaysia became a export nation which traded in the last decades mostly textile or rubber products. But in nower days Malaysia also has got a high share of exports in the electronic and high tech branche. Government policy has generally accorded a central role to foreign capital, while at the same time working towards more substantial participation for domestic, especiallybumiputera,capital and enterprise. The current plan “Vision 2020” aims to reach a fully developed industrialized economy in 2020. The first point in the essay is a short background information about the country Malaysia. I continue with the economic history from the premodern history up to the era after the Second World War. The third chapter dicusses the policies of the government; the policies of the transition as well as the contemporary policies. Finally the essay points out the present economic system and why it is so successful.
