Emma of 83rd Street by Audrey Bellezza,Emily Harding Pdf

In this witty and romantic debut novel, Jane Austen’s Emma meets the misadventures of Manhattan’s modern dating scene as two lifelong friends discover that, in the search for love, you sometimes don’t have to look any further than your own backyard. Beautiful, clever, and rich, Emma Woodhouse has lived twenty-three years in her tight-knit Upper East Side neighborhood with very little to distress or vex her…that is, until her budding matchmaking hobby results in her sister’s marriage—and subsequent move downtown. Now, with her sister gone and all her friends traveling abroad, Emma must start her final year of grad school grappling with an entirely new emotion: boredom. So when she meets Nadine, a wide-eyed Ohio transplant with a heart of gold and drugstore blonde highlights to match, Emma not only sees a potential new friend but a new project. If only her overbearing neighbor George Knightley would get out of her way. Handsome, smart, and successful, the only thing that frustrates Knightley more than a corked whiskey is his childhood friend, Emma. Whether it’s her shopping sprees between classes or her revolving door of ill-conceived hobbies, he is only too happy to lecture her on all the finer points of adulthood she’s so hell-bent on ignoring. But despite his gripes—and much to his own chagrin—Knightley can’t help but notice that the girl next door is a woman now…one who he suddenly can’t get out of his head. As Emma’s best laid plans collide with everyone from hipster baristas to meddling family members to flaky playboy millionaires, these two friends slowly realize their need to always be right has been usurped by a new need entirely, and it’s not long before they discover that even the most familiar stories still have some surprises.

Emma Embury: Poet of the Heart by Charles Russell Pdf

Call her majestic. The most popular woman poet of America’s 19th Century literary Renaissance. Her works were prodigious, inclusive, democratic. She published more than four-hundred poems, novels, and essays during her lifetime. She contributed poems to The Knickerbocker Magazine, The Lady’s Companion, Columbian, Godey’s Lady’s Book, Graham’s Magazine, and Religious Souvenir. Her story, Pictures of Early Life, was applauded as "highly interesting and instructive; and of a character which should place it in the hands of youth.” In 1845 Edgar Allan Poe published her “Thoughts of a Silent Man” essays in his periodical Broadway Journal. Later. In “The Literati of New York City,” a scholarly article he wrote for the August 1846 issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book, he classed Emma as one of the principal writers of the time. A precursor of feminism, she wrote, “If I were a man, as, thank God, I am not, for among my many blessings I rank first that of being a woman,” and gave “An Address on Female Education” championing higher education for women that was reprinted in Woman and Higher Education, a collection essays by founders of the first women’s colleges. Her “Essay on American Literature,” was the first to propose that America should support a literary class in society and a national literature. Her skills extended beyond excellence as a writer. She played the piano and other musical instruments, sang in a lovely mezzo-soprano voice, and painted exquisite watercolors for her book Nature’s Gems, the first book on American wildflowers.

Emma Darwin by James D. Loy,Kent M. Loy Pdf

In 1808, Josiah Wedgwood II, owner and general manager of the famous pottery and china manufactory that bore his name, welcomed an eighth child into his large, vibrant family. This daughter, Emma, had a relatively happy childhood and grew up intelligent, educated, and religious. A talented sportswoman and an accomplished pianist, she married her cousin Charles Darwin at the age of thirty, bore ten children in their forty-three years together, and patiently nursed her famous husband through mysterious and chronic illnesses. Informed by her strong Christian faith as well as her quick, inquiring mind, Emma learned to coexist with her husband's radical scientific theories, though she worried about the fate of Charles's soul. Although the high spirits of her youth were somewhat dampened by the cares of life, she managed family and household affairs--including the difficult circumstances surrounding the death of three children--with courage, gravity, and a sense of humor. In this charming volume, the wife, companion, and confidante of the father of evolution comes into full focus. Drawing upon Emma’s personal correspondence as well as the abundant literature about her husband, authors James Loy and Kent Loy reveal the fascinating story of an exceptional woman who remained true to herself despite hardship and who, in the process, humanized her work-obsessed husband and held her family together.
