Longer Narrative Poems (Classic Reprint) by Edward Everett Hale Pdf

Excerpt from Longer Narrative Poems When we turn to the poems to study them a little with a view to a finer, more critical enjoy ment later, we must perceive, it would seem, first a general likeness and then the many differences, some in form and subject, and some of the manner of handling, which is apt to be the thing that gives us an idea of the character of the poet. These things are points of knowledge, certainly, and knowledge only of poetry is not the great thing true enjoyment is the really important matter. But such knowledge as this may be made the foundation of enjoyment, because it is pretty sure to bring out in our reading things which we shall enjoy and which we might otherwise neglect. Stories From Old English Poetry (Classic Reprint) by Abby Sage Richardson Pdf

Excerpt from Stories From Old English Poetry Remembering her latest loss, therefore, the child concluded that at present no one should share the secret of the Shakespeare books. So she devised many hiding-places for them, and used to read them at night, and in the gray dawn of morning in her little bed, and out of school hours in the broad sunny win dow-seat in the attic, where she had a secure retreat. English History in Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Pertwee Pdf

Excerpt from English History in Verse A volume of moderate compass which illustrates from English Poetry many of the principal events of the History of England should be of great service, especially to the young. Herein the student gets the facts which have built up England as it is to-day, dealt with in a picturesque manner. The story of a nation's life as seen by the Poet must always be fascinating, and serve to make the men and actions of the past live again with a reality that prose cannot equally impart. Such inaccuracies as are to be found in some of the poems and ballads given in this volume are more than balanced by the manner in which the writers portray the spirit animating the times with which they are concerned, and the passions which called forth the character and heroism which they vividly describe. I believe that to the young this book will prove attractive that by means of it Teachers will find it a far easier task to awaken an intelligent interest in those wider fields of History upon which this volume makes no attempt to touch. Poet's Walk by Mowbray Morris Pdf

Excerpt from Poet's Walk: An Introduction to English Poetry Whence then arises, and how is perfected the process of disillusion? How comes it that the pleasure, welcomed so freely and gladly in our infancy, too often sinks, as our faculties enlarge and our eyes grow clearer, into an odious and insipid task? It arises in the first place, no doubt, from the causes already mentioned; but it is also perhaps fostered by a certain narrowness and infelicity of method that one too often finds employed even by those who have the wit to see that poetry should be gently offered, not violently thrust upon the young. Poetry and Prose by Adolphus Alfred Jack Pdf

Excerpt from Poetry and Prose: Being Essays on Modern English Poetry This little book is an attempt to make a little clearer what every one feels about poetry. It is an attempt pursued in a number of essays upon themes so familiar that in writing upon them I have the advantage of touching directly upon the actual poetical experience of almost every reader. There is the further personal advantage that in dealing with a body of poetry so often analysed, the liability to individual caprice is, at least in part, eliminated.
