General Theory of Light Propagation and Imaging Through the Atmosphere by T. Stewart McKechnie Pdf

This 2nd edition lays out an updated version of the general theory of light propagation and imaging through Earth’s turbulent atmosphere initially developed in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, with additional applications in the areas of laser communications and high-energy laser beam propagation. New material includes a chapter providing a comprehensive mathematical tool set for precisely characterizing image formation with the anticipated Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTS), enabling a staggering range of star image shapes and sizes; existing chapters rewritten or modified so as to supplement the mathematics with clearer physical insight through written and graphical means; a history of the development of present-day understanding of light propagation and imaging through the atmosphere as represented by the general theory described. Beginning with the rudimentary, geometrical-optics based understanding of a century ago, it describes advances made in the 1960s, including the development of the ‘Kolmogorov theory,’ the deficiencies of which undermined its credibility, but not before it had done enormous damage, such as construction of a generation of underperforming ‘light bucket’ telescopes. The general theory requires no a priori turbulence assumptions. Instead, it provides means for calculating the turbulence properties directly from readily-measurable properties of star images.

Pesticides in the Atmosphere by Michael S. Majewski,Paul D. Capel Pdf

Most people know about the presence and health effects of pesticide residues in the water they drink. However, they may not realize the impact of atmospheric transportation and deposition of pesticides on water quality. Scientific studies of pesticides in various atmospheric matrices (air, rain, snow, aerosols, and fog) provide some of the answers.

Air Pollution by Jeremy Colls,Abhishek Tiwary Pdf

A one stop, comprehensive textbook, covering the three essential components of air pollution science. The Third Edition has been updated with the latest developments, especially the inclusion of new information on the role of air pollutants in climate change. The authors give greater coverage to the developing economies around the world where air pollution problems are on the rise. The Third Edition continues to cover a wide range of air quality issues, retaining a quantitative perspective. Topics covered include - gaseous and particulate air pollutants, measurement techniques, meteorology and dispersion modelling, mobile sources, indoor air, effects on plants, materials, humans and animals. Moving away from classical toxic air pollutants, there is a chapter on climate change and another on the depletion of stratospheric ozone. A special feature of this new edition is the inclusion of a fresh chapter on air pollution mitigation by vegetation, mainly its role in maintaining a sustainable urban environment. Recommended for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate courses specialising in air pollution, both for environmental scientists and engineers. The new material included in the Third Edition extends its use by practitioners in consultancies or local authorities.

Meteorological Investigations of the Upper Atmosphere by R. S. Quiroz Pdf

The objectives of the American Meteorological Society are "the development and dissemination of knowledge of meteorology in all its phases and applications, and the advancement of its professional ideals." The organization of the Society took place in affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science at Saint Louis, Missouri, December 29, 1919, and its incorporation, at Washington, D. C., January 21, 1920. The work of the Society is carried on by the Bulletin, the Journal, and Meteorological Monographs, by papers and discussions at meetings of the Society, through the offices of the Secretary and the Executive Secretary, and by correspondence. All of the Americas are represented in the membership of the Society as well as many foreign countries.

Sulfur in the Atmosphere by R. B. Husar,J. P. Lodge,D. J. Moore Pdf

Sulfur in the Atmosphere covers the proceedings of the International Symposium held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia on September 7-14, 1977. The text focuses on the processes involved in the transfer of sulfur through the atmospheric environment, particularly noting its distribution in space in gas, liquid, and solid phases. The book first offers information on the properties of sulfur and the processes involved in its determination, as well as measurement methods, chemical transformations, dry and wet deposition, and aerosol dynamics. The publication also looks at water-soluble sulfur compounds in aerosols, chemical properties of tropospheric sulfur aerosols, and sampling and analysis of atmospheric sulfates and related species. The text examines the techniques involved in the identification of chemical composition of aerosol sulfur compounds. Topics include thermal volatilization, thermometric methods, wet chemical identification, and laser Raman spectroscopy. The publication also reviews the calculation of long term sulfur deposition in Europe; transmission of sulfur dioxide on local, regional, and continental scale; and airborne sampling system for the monitoring of plume. The book is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the transfer of sulfur through the atmospheric environment.
