Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri by Charles Larpenteur Pdf

"The life-record kept by Charles Larpenteur is one of our most important sources of information concerning the fur trade of the Upper Missouri in the nineteenth century." -- Milo Milton Quaife Born in France in 1807, Larpenteur's family left his native country after the Bourbon restoration and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. Following an insatiable appetite to explore the uncivilized West, Larpenteur joined the Rocky Mountain Fur Company in 1833 and traveled west to the mouth of the Yellowstone River. An important part of fur-trade history, chronicling the business in the American West in the nineteenth century, Forty Years a Fur Trader is also an insightful source of Native American history. Larpenteur had daily dealings with the Native American tribes of Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota and his journals reveal that he and many of the other trappers showed great respect to the native people, learning to live among them without attempting to eradicate established Native American life. Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri is the preeminent source for the history of the fur trade in the American West. Drawing upon daily journals recorded by Charles Larpenteur it provides fascinating insight into the history of the Midwest in the nineteenth century. "Its true inwardness is turned inside out by a chronicler whose eyes never opened to see much difference between good and evil, and who so saw nothing to conceal." -- The American Historical Review Charles Larpenteur was an American fur trader, whose memoir and diary frequently have been used as a source to fur trade history. He diligently kept a daily diary during his time in the trade and used it to write this book at the end of his life. He died in 1872.

Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri by Charles Larpenteur Pdf

Excerpt from Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri: The Personal Narrative of Charles Larpenteur, 1833-1872 St. Louis has always been the base for fur trading in the territory beyond the Missis sippi. In 1762 two New Orleans merchants founded the firm of Maxent, Laclede and Company, and chose the present site of St. Louis as the location for their trading post. As the post grew into a settlement, a town, and finally into a city, it continued to be the principal trading center of the frontier, and even today its semi-annual fur auctions are the largest in America. At Fort Pierre Mr. Charles reported the Indians to be very bad above. The agents had a talk, through the interpreter, Francois La Framboise, with some Sioux who were camped at Pierre, complaining of the killing of eight Indians at Fort Randall a short time before. At Heart River island the Campbell's rudder broke, and while she was repairing, the Shreveport, which had discharged at Cow island and hurried down to meet her, hove in sight. Cargoes being rearranged, the two boats went up in convoy. When at the mouth of L'Eau qui Mont, or Rising Water creek, the Shreveport, in advance, stopped at a sandbar to take on driftwood. While she was thus occupied, several Indians appeared on the opposite bank, and called out in Grosventre language for a boat; they were returning from a hunt, had made plenty of meat, and wished to trade for coffee and sugar. After this their horses were turned out on the prairie to feed, the squaws were crossing with the plunder in a bull boat, and the Campbell had just tapped the signal-bell to start, when the Indian women gave a piercing shriek. A Sioux on a white horse dashed out of a ravine, making for the horses, and was followed by 15 or 20 others, who 350 THE TOBACCO GARDEN AFFAIR. The Grosventres, who had thus lost nearly all they possessed at one fell swoop, were taken aboard the Campbell, provided for, and landed on the opposite side, to make their way to the village.
