Gildersleeve's Latin Grammar by B. L. Gildersleeve Pdf

Excerpt from Gildersleeve's Latin Grammar The first edition of this Latin Grammar appeared in 1867, the second in 1872; the third edition, carefully revised and very much enlarged, is herewith presented to the public. In the preparation of this third edition the office of the senior collaborator has been chiefly advisory, except in the Syntax. In the syntax nearly everything that pertains to the history of usage has been brought together by Professor Lodge; but for all deviations from the theory of former editions we bear a joint responsibility. A manual that has held its place, however modest, for more than a quarter of a century, hardly needs an elaborate exposition of the methods followed; but as the new grammar embraces a multitude of details that were not taken up in the old grammar, it has been thought fit that Professor Lodge should indicate the sources of the notes with which he has enriched the original work. Latin Grammar (Classic Reprint) by Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve Pdf

Excerpt from Latin Grammar IN response to the demand for a Shorter Latin Grammar based on the gildersleeve-lodge work of 1894 the fol lowing manual has been prepared. Historical detail and grammatical exposition intended for advanced students mainly have been discarded, and the phraseology has been simplified wherever it seemed possible without a sacrifice of scientific exactness. Still greater abridgment might have been more in accordance with methods that are in vogue just now; but a grammar that shall serve the average student throughout his course in school or college can not be reduced to a skeleton, and we have not been able to gain our own consent to save space by limiting the illustra tive examples to lean and meaningless sentences, holding as we do that the pupil ought to have something more to remember than a mere group of words. Much attention has been paid to the typography, and by retaining the old section-numbers (as has been done except in the list of verbs, 137 - 165) the parallel use of the larger and the smaller grammars has been facilitated. In conclusion, we desire to express our obligations to Dr. W. Gordon mccabe, Headmaster of the University School, Richmond, Va., who has read the book in proof-sheets and has given us the advantage of his scholarly criticisms and to Mr. Charles W. Bain, Headmaster of the Sewanee Grammar School in the University of the South, who has also read all the proof-sheets and given material assistance in adapting the book to the wants of younger students. By these criticisms and others that have reached us we have endeavored to profit, and it is hoped that a wider sphere pf usefulness awaits this result of our joint labors. Hand-Book of Latin Notes by E. W. Bosworth Pdf

Excerpt from Hand-Book of Latin Notes: Based for the Most Part Upon; The Syntax of the Latin Verb and Case Relations of Professor Peters, (University of Virginia;); And Gildersleeve's Latin Grammar 3. In abstract relations, with a preposition. Ex. - In furorem incidere: to fall into a rage. In servitutem redigere: to reduce to servitude. In potestatem venire: to come into power. In fugam dare: to put to flight. Note. - The preposition may be in composition with the verb and it may also be repeated. But names of towns, cities and small islands, used to show place whither, are put in the Accusative without a preposition. Likewise observe domum, domos (home), and rus (into the country). Note also the forms eo (thither, to that place), quo (whither), alio (to another place), aliquo (to some, any place). Ex. - Legati Roman venerunt: the ambassadors came to Rome. Athenas rediit: he has returned to Athens. Tarentum proficiscitur: he is starting (setting out) for Tarentum. Rem. 1, a. The possessives meam, suam, nostrum, etc., may modify domum, in which case no preposition should be used. Ex. - Meam, tuam, nostram, etc., domum: to my, your, our, etc., home. b. With a Genitive of the possessor, or an adjective of like force, the preposition may be used or omitted. Ex. - Domum Lucii, or in domum Lucii: to the house (home) of Lucius. Domum Pompeium, or in domum Pompeiam: to the house of Pompey. c. With any other adjective or Genitive the preposition should be used. Ex. - In hane, aliam, gratam, domum: to this, another, pleasant, home. Rem. 2, a. When the name of a city, etc., in the Accusative of the Terminus or End is associated with an appositive urbem, oppidum, insulam, etc., the preposition is used and precedes both. Ex. - Ad urbem Ilerdam: to the city of Ilerda. Ad urbem Syracusas: to the city of Syracuse. b. When the appositive urbem, etc., is defined by an adjective or Genitive, the preposition may be used, in which case the name of the city, etc., best precedes it. If the preposition is omitted, the name of the city, etc., must precede the appositive word. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
