'Great-Grandpa's Tree' is the story of the Hamilton family, immigrants to New Zealand in 1868, who planted a symbolic acorn on their arrival. The book follows their experiences in New Zealand and across the world to 1968, when the great-grandsons of Joseph Hamilton climb their great-grandpa's mighty oak tree.
The elementary tale of the life cycle of a tree, from its beginnings as a sapling to its demise on the forest floor, where it decomposes and becomes "a home for rabbits, and food for flowers", is also a life lesson for people. In this enhanced version, enjoy read-along, some fun animations, and a coloring page!
A moving, multigenerational story about love, family roots, and the cycle of life When Emilia finds a walnut one morning, Grandpa tells her the story behind it: of his journey across the ocean to a new home, with only one small bag and a nut in his pocket. “I planted my little tree in good brown soil, so it would grow strong here forever.” “In this house? In this yard?” “Shall we go see?” Step by step, Grandpa teaches Emilia how to cultivate her own seed. But as her little nut grows, Grandpa begins to slow down—until one sad day, Emilia has to say goodbye. Emilia’s sapling looks as droopy as she feels . . . but she knows just what to do. From acclaimed author and illustrator Ammi-Joan Paquette and Felicita Sala, this tender story is a poignant reminder that the best things grow with time—and that even when they are no longer here, the ones we love are always a part of us.

"Comprised of a series of long, lyrical narrative poems, Dong Li's debut collection of poetry braids forgotten histories, family sorrows, and political upheavals into a panoramic view of China and the people who embody it across generations. The Orange Tree navigates the personal and the political, grounding its abstract meditations in the raw, worldly experience in characters whose lives bear striking affinities across disparate eras. Cycling between mythological time, ancient history, and modern memory, Li offers unexpected perspectives on epochs that resemble our own-not the least of which are the poems' unflinching meditations on the brutality of war. Throughout the book, images and phrases are compressed into portmanteaus of premonition, signaling as nouns the metaphoric inventions that one will come to find-"the anguishednight," "the farawayorangetree," "the launderedyears," "the drifteddream." Like the legend of a map or the runes on a relic, these puzzles invite us to parse the words of The Orange Tree, breaking them apart and creating entrances that lead deeper into the elaborate architecture of Li's poetic world-building"--
