Catena Aurea by Thomas Aquinas Pdf

This is volume two of a five volume effort, by one of History’s greatest commentator's on the Gospels. This work is written for one who does have a fluid knowledge of philosophy, not alone Thomas Aquinas. What this accomplishes is to provide a modern version of the Catena Aurea in today's verbiage and related issues, while in keeping with the flow and content of the original. It is not hard to admire St. Thomas Aquinas immovably caught in the splendor of a stained-glass window; it is easy to pay tribute to his Summa Theologica as long as it remains high on a bookshelf giving character to a library. Under these circumstances, we of the twenty first century can read about them both, talk about them enthusiastically, but pretty much leave them both alone. Aquinas is one who regardless of your placement on your spiritual journey. Aquinas is the basis for so much of what we have come to regard as dogma. This work is essential to not only understanding Aquinas’s other works, but also our own journey.

Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and the Three Maries Debates by Jacques Lefèvre D'Etaples Pdf

The Three Maries pamphlets published in Paris by the celebrated humanist scholar Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples appeared between 1517 and 1519, and are virtually his only venture into independent authorship. These four short Latin texts investigated the traditions of the Magdalen and the sisters of the Virgin, and the calculation of the triduum , or three days and nights between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. Written in a spirit of profound piety, they nevertheless challenged notions of authority and powerful established devotional cults, at the very moment when Luther was mounting his own challenge to orthodoxy, and gave rise to a high-profile controversy which anticipated the response to Luther. This edition presents Lefèvre's Latin texts together with an English translation and an extensive introduction which situates the controversy in its contemporary cultural context, and thus throws new light on Lefèvre's exegesis and his distinctive Christian humanism. Latin and English text.

From the Lost Teaching of Polycarp by Charles Evan Hill Pdf

This book significantly expands our understanding of the life and work of Polycarp of Smyrna. Part One establishes that the anonymous apostolic presbyterquot;, whose oral teaching is cited intermittently by Irenaeus in Against Heresies 4.27.1 through 4.32.1, is in fact Polycarp. The fragments of teaching preserved by Irenaeus shed valuable light upon his relationship with Polycarp, establishing that Irenaeus' contact with his teacher was neither fleeting nor shallow. They also reveal Polycarp's important role in opposing the early effects of the Marcionite movement and gain a valuable perspective on Polycarp's Old Testament hermeneutic in the face of ecclesiastical controversy. Part Two considers the many links which would tie Polycarp to the work known as Ad Diognetum . Charles E. Hill proposes that the work is not a treatise but the transcript of an oral address. A new proposal is made for the identity of Diognetus, the addressee, based upon archaeological evidence of an aristocratic Smyrnaean family of the second century.

Shakespeare's Rhetoric of Comic Character by Karen Newman Pdf

First published in 1985. In this revisionist history of comic characterization, Karen Newman argues that, contrary to received opinion, Shakespeare was not the first comic dramatist to create self-conscious characters who seem 'lifelike' or 'realistic'. His comic practice is firmly set within a comic tradition which stretches from Plautus and Menander to playwrights of the Italian Renaissance.
