The High History of the Holy Grail by Anonim Pdf

Perceval smiteth his horse of his spurs and cometh to the first in such sort that he passeth his spear right through his body and beareth him to the ground dead. The other two knights each smote his man so that they wounded them in the body right sore. The other two would fain have fled, but Perceval preventeth them, and they gave themselves up prisoners for fear of death. "Lady," saith he, "see here the quittance for your knight that was slain, and the fifth also remaineth lying on the piece of ground shent in like manner as was your own.""Fair son," saith she, "I should have better loved peace after another sort, and so it might be.""Lady," saith he, "Thus is it now. One ought to make war against the warrior, and be at peace with the peaceable." ===The tales of King Arthur and his knights have been enthralling readers for a millennium... and here is one of the oldest, set down on the page in the early 13th century in Old French by an unknown author and translated into English in 1898. Inspired by medieval Arthurian poet Chr tien De Troyes' unfinished "Perceval, or the Knight of the Grail," this will delight lovers of medieval culture, British mythology, and high romance.British poet and medievalist SEBASTIAN EVANS (1830-1909) also wrote Brother Fabian's Manuscripts.

The High History of the Holy Graal by Anonymous Pdf

This book is a translated version of 'Perceval, the Story of the Grail', which was originally written in Old French by the author Chrétien de Troyes in the late 12th century. This book is the earliest recorded account of what was to become the Quest for the Holy Grail but describes only a golden grail (a serving dish) in the central scene, does not call it "holy" and treats a lance, appearing at the same time, as equally significant.

The Amateur Hour by Jonathan Zimmerman Pdf

The first full-length history of college teaching in the United States from the nineteenth century to the present, this book sheds new light on the ongoing tension between the modern scholarly ideal—scientific, objective, and dispassionate—and the inevitably subjective nature of day-to-day instruction. American college teaching is in crisis, or so we are told. But we've heard that complaint for the past 150 years, as critics have denounced the poor quality of instruction in undergraduate classrooms. Students daydream in gigantic lecture halls while a professor drones on, or they meet with a teaching assistant for an hour of aimless discussion. The modern university does not reward teaching, so faculty members at every level neglect it in favor of research and publication. In the first book-length history of American college teaching, Jonathan Zimmerman confirms but also contradicts these perennial complaints. Drawing upon a wide range of previously unexamined sources, The Amateur Hour shows how generations of undergraduates indicted the weak instruction they received. But Zimmerman also chronicles institutional efforts to improve it, especially by making teaching more "personal." As higher education grew into a gigantic industry, he writes, American colleges and universities introduced small-group activities and other reforms designed to counter the anonymity of mass instruction. They also experimented with new technologies like television and computers, which promised to "personalize" teaching by tailoring it to the individual interests and abilities of each student. But, Zimmerman reveals, the emphasis on the personal inhibited the professionalization of college teaching, which remains, ultimately, an amateur enterprise. The more that Americans treated teaching as a highly personal endeavor, dependent on the idiosyncrasies of the instructor, the less they could develop shared standards for it. Nor have they rigorously documented college instruction, a highly public activity which has taken place mostly in private. Pushing open the classroom door, The Amateur Hour illuminates American college teaching and frames a fresh case for restoring intimate learning communities, especially for America's least privileged students. Anyone who wants to change college teaching will have to start here.

The History of the Christian Religion and Church During the First Three Centuries by Augustus Neander Pdf

Originally published in 1841, The History of the Christian Religion and Church is the most famous work written by German church historian DR. AUGUSTUS NEANDER (1789-1850). Neander finds that the introduction of Christianity caused a stir in morality and thinking in those first few hundred years that propelled civilization forward. And precisely because of the lack of institutions, early Christians had a greater freedom to explore the impact of Revelation on their souls. He discusses different Christian sects, diverging doctrines and the controversies that followed, the role of Jews in Christianity, the Gnostics, and eventually the establishment of the Church. Neander also talks separately about the great doctrines of Christianity, dealing with the nature of God, the name of God, Creation, the Trinity, and numerous other issues that have been of great concern to Christian thinkers throughout history. Anyone interested in the history of the Christianity will find a wealth of information in this well-researched book.

The Palgrave Handbook of History and Social Studies Education by Christopher W. Berg,Theodore M. Christou Pdf

This Handbook presents an international collection of essays examining history education past and present. Framing recent curriculum reforms in Canada and in the United States in light of a century-long debate between the relationship between theory and practice, this collection contextualizes the debate by exploring the evolution of history and social studies education within their state or national contexts. With contributions ranging from Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, chapters illuminate the ways in which curriculum theorists and academic researchers are working with curriculum developers and educators to translate and refine notions of historical thinking or inquiry as well as pedagogical practice.

History as a Profession by Pim den Boer Pdf

This is a vivid portrait of the French historical profession in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, concluding just before the emergence of the famous Annales school of historians. It places the profession in its social, academic, and political context and shows that historians of the period have been unfairly maligned as amateurish and primitive in comparison to their more celebrated successors. Pim den Boer begins by sketching the contours of French historiography in the nineteenth century, examining the quantity of historical writing, its subject matter, and who wrote it. He traces the growing influence of professional historians. He shows the increasing involvement of the national government in historical studies, paying special attention to the impact of political factions, ranging from ultraroyalists to radical republicans. He explores how historical research and teaching changed at schools and universities. And he shows how nineteenth-century historians' keen understanding of the past and of historical methodology laid the foundations for historiography in the twentieth century. archives, including official documents, confidential reports, and personal letters. Den Boer makes use of statistical, biographical, and methodological analysis and demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of both minor historians and leading scholars, including Charles Seignobos and Charles-Victor Langlois. Originally published in 1998.
