The Topkapi Scroll by Gülru Necipoğlu Pdf

Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.

How to Study Architecture by Charles H. Caffin Pdf

This book is written by Charles Henry Caffin, an Oxford-educated American writer and art critic who was greatly influential in the modern art scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It explores architectural styles across the ages, spanning from the Egyptian-inspired columns to Renaissance-style domes. As Caffin himself puts it: "Even out of the fragments of architecture it is possible for the imagination to visualize epochs of civilization long since buried in the past."

Locks and Builders Hardware by Henry Robinson Towne Pdf

Excerpt from Locks and Builders Hardware: A Hand Book for Architects For the proper exposition of the subject of Builders' Hardware, especiallv in its practical relation to the work of the architect, it became necessarv to refer, specifically and in detail, to concrete examples of the product it embraces. To have omitted all such reference would have made the volume of little practical value to have selected diverse examples from the product of various manufacturers would have been confusing, illogical and contrary to actual practice if the product of one establishment was to be used for purposes of illustration it was expedient that the author should avail of the one with which he is most familiar. There fore he has not hesitated to avail franklv of the product of the works operated under his management. Writing Beyond Pen and Parchment by Ricarda Wagner,Christine Neufeld,Ludger Lieb Pdf

What can stories of magical engraved rings or prophetic inscriptions on walls tell us about how writing was perceived before print transformed the world? Writing beyond Pen and Parchment introduces readers to a Middle Ages where writing is not confined to manuscripts but is inscribed in the broader material world, in textiles and tombs, on weapons or human skin. Drawing on the work done at the Collaborative Research Centre “Material Text Cultures,” (SFB 933) this volume presents a comparative overview of how and where text-bearing artefacts appear in medieval German, Old Norse, British, French, Italian and Iberian literary traditions, and also traces the paths inscribed objects chart across multiple linguistic and cultural traditions. The volume’s focus on the raw materials and practices that shaped artefacts both mundane or fantastical in medieval narratives offers a fresh perspective on the medieval world that takes seriously the vibrancy of matter as a vital aspect of textual culture often overlooked.
