Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...home with an uncle, adding to his educational acquirements by attending school. His first employment was in the ore mines, in which he worked for a few years in different places. In 1889, after the flood, he returned to Johnstown and opened a hotel in a small frame building that stood on the site of his present establishment. The hotel of which he is now proprietor was erected in 1896 by the heirs of Charles Boyle, and is conducted by Michael P. Boyle under the name of Boyle's Hotel. He has been very successful in its management and it is now one of the best establishments of the kind in Johnstown. In the sphere of politics Mr. Boyle is a stanch Democrat, the men and measures advocated and endorsed by the organization always finding in him an uncompromising supporter. He is a member of St. Columba's church. Mr. Boyle married, in 1894, in Johnstown, Margaret Dowling, of that city and they are the parents of the following children: Charles Joseph; Walter Vincent; and Mary Catharine. HON. ALVIN EVANS, deceased, of Ebensburg, of whom, orator though he was, it has been justly said that "the most eloquent speech he made was the life he lived," was of Welsh ancestry. His grandfather, John Evans, was a native of Cardiganshire, Wales, and was by trade a carpenter. In 1832 he emigrated to the United States, settling in Cambria county, Pennsylvania, and making his home in Cambria township, wThere he followed his trade in connection with farming. About 1847 he purchased property in Ebensburg, where he passed the residue of his days. He was for some time engaged in manufacturing lumber by the old-time whip-sawr process. His creed was that of the Congregational church. He married Elizabeth Jones, also a native of Cardiganshire, and they were...

A Romp Through Early Cambria County, Pennsylvania by Anonim Pdf

This book is a history of East Central Cambria County. It is a timely addition to research on events and families of Early Cambria. This is especially true since Cambria will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of its founding in 2004. The book treats of a long-silenced, unwritten chapter in the founding of the young County. It is really impossible to deal with the history of this area without noting the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. In the person of one of its ministers, Rev. Demetrius Gallitzin, opposition was mounted to obstruct the founding of the young County. Gallitzin, a Russian aristocrat, was not about to tolerate another power base moving into his ballywick. He went as far as to publicly slander from the pulpit the officials of the new County in an attempt to negate their influence. It is an eye-opening view of things that were not always peaceful in Camelot. The Gallitzin affair is not the focus of the work, rather it treats of events and people who were formative influences in the little world of early Cambria. It deals with what we might refer to as the establishment of the ?establishment?. These were the beginnings of religion, education, and government in the young County. Most of the activity of the narrative takes place in the 19th century. However, some events before and after that century are dealt with. A spectacle is presented that gives views and insightful comments on events as diverse as the coming of the Portage Railroad, the Mountain House, the Ku Klux Klan?s visit to Lilly, the sinking of Cresson Shaft, the rivalry between Munster and Loretto, and the arrival of the PRR?s Mainline. The volume is replete with illustrations and maps, many by the author. Several side trips are taken that help put the little world of early Cambria in a larger context. These include trips to the PA/MD border area, where many of the early settlers came from, and to the Sinking Valley in Blair County. A thorough index makes the book a useful research tool in addition to its being a significant new addition to the literature of early Cambria. --Jim Miller

Class-Conscious Coal Miners by Alan J. Singer Pdf

Bituminous coal miners in Central Pennsylvania were among the most militant and class-conscious workers in the United States in the post-World War I era. Class-Conscious Coal Miners examines the development of working-class consciousness as they fought to sustain their union, jobs, communities, and work pejoratives, what they described as the Miner's Freedom, against mechanization and operator open shop drives in the 1920s. Their struggles brought them into conflict with coal companies, a pro-business federal government, and the business-unionist leadership of the United Mine Workers of America. After the collapse of the bituminous coal industry in Central Pennsylvania starting in the 1950s, working-class consciousness gradually diminished until, in the present century, there has been a marked shift toward political conservatism.

Adirondack Enigma by Cheri L. Farnsworth Pdf

When Henry Debosnys arrived in Essex, New York, the sleepy town was unprepared for the string of dark events that trailed the exotic European stranger. Within weeks of his appearance, he had romanced wealthy widow Betsey Wells, charming her friends and children and presenting the picture of an ideal new family at their spur-of-the-moment wedding. Yet when authorities discovered Betsey's mangled body in a nearby forest, Debosnys's image as a caring family man began to unravel. During his incarceration, Debosnys slowly revealed himself to be a genius fluent in six languages, a master cryptographer and the murderer of at least two previous wives. As the scrutiny on Debosnys intensified, he began producing coded messages, allegedly confessions to a lifetime of villainy. Author Cheri Farnsworth reveals never-before-seen evidence of this Upstate tragedy, including reproductions of the legendary, unsolved Debosnys cryptograms, in an effort to finally uncover the truth about this depraved con man. The only question that remains is who will be the first to crack the "Debosnys Code"?
