Homosexuality in Renaissance and Enlightenment England by Claude J Summers Pdf

This new book significantly contributes to an increased understanding of the gay and lesbian experience as it illuminates important works of literature and clarifies the status of same-sex desire in English literature from 1500--1760. Homosexual themes can be found throughout the literature of the English Renaissance and Enlightenment, but only rarely are they direct and unambiguous. The essays here are engaged in a vital and necessary process of re-historicizing and re-contextualizing literature. Utilizing a variety of critical methods and proceeding from several different theoretical and ideological presuppositions, these essays raise important questions about the methodology of gay studies, about the conception of same-sex desire, about the depiction of homoerotics, and about the relationship of sexuality and textuality, even as they shed new light on the homosexual import of a number of significant works of literature. Among the authors studied are Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, John Donne, Lady Mary Wroth, Katherine Philips, Aphra Behn, John Cleland, and Thomas Gray. The collection attests both the current intellectual ferment in gay studies and the richness of English Renaissance and eighteenth-century literary representations of homosexuality. Homosexuality in Renaissance and Enlightenment England provides numerous insights into important works of literature and into significant theoretical issues implicit in the process of discerning and defining homosexuality in texts of earlier ages. All the contributors locate their texts in carefully delineated cultural and historical milieux. But they are not unduly constrained by either the tyranny of theory or the anxieties of anachronism. Rather than proceeding from hidebound or fashionably current ideologies, they sift the texts they study for the concrete evidence from which theories of sexuality might be constructed or modified. Hence, the collection will be valuable both for its practical criticism and for its theoretical contributions. It vividly illustrates the variety of gay studies in literature, especially as applied to works of earlier ages.

Homosexual by Dennis Altman Pdf

"A pleasure...a really sensitive, lucid account of his personal liberation...a penetrating analysis of the political premises and goals and philosophical background of the movement." —The New York Times "The one to read...may very well be the most intelligible and best written books on the subject." —The Minneapolis Tribune When Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation was first published in 1971, The New York Review of Books, hailed it as the only work that bears comparison...with the best to appear from Women's Liberation. Time wrote that, among the whole tumble of homosexuals who have `come out of the closet', perhaps best among these accounts is a book by Dennis Altman. Long out of print, Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation remains a seminal work in the gay liberation movement. Altman examines the different positions promoting gay liberation, and recognizes the healthy diversity in these divisions. Elaborating on the writers of the emergent movement--James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg, Christopher Isherwood, Herbert Marcuse, Kate Millett, and others--Homosexual suggests that we can nurture a common, progressive movement out of our shared sexuality and experience of a heterosexist society. Today, in the age of AIDS, ACT UP, and Queer Nation, the possibility of such commonality is of critical importance. Jeffrey Weeks's new introduction places Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation in its historical context, while the author's new afterword examines its significance in light of today's lesbian and gay movement.

The Mental Health Professions and Homosexuality by Jack Drescher,Vittorio Lingiardi Pdf

Get a unique insight into the attitudes of mental health professionals working outside the United States! The Mental Health Professions and Homosexuality: International Perspectives examines historical and contemporary attitudes toward homosexuality in the theory and practice of mental health professionals working in Europe and Asia. Edited by two noted authors, educators, and practitioners, Drs. Vittorio Lingiardi and Jack Drescher, the book's unique insights are an important step in keeping pace with current international mental health literature about homosexuality. The Mental Health Professions and Homosexuality addresses the relationship between psychiatric institutions and homosexuality; the history of current theoretical frameworks for thinking about homosexuality; the emergence of an international gay, lesbian, and bisexual psychiatric movement; and how changes in psychoanalytic theory and practice both mirror and are influenced by the changing legal and societal status of homosexuality. The Mental Health Professions and Homosexuality: International Perspectives asks three questions of practitioners working in China, India, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, and the United Kingdom: 1) what are the prevailing theoretical models about homosexuality found in professional literature in your country; 2) what is known about the actual clinical experiences of gay and lesbian clients; and 3) what is the status of openly gay and lesbian mental health practitioners in your country? The responses reveal insights on a variety of topics, including: the changing views within British psychiatry a survey of German psychoanalytic institutes regarding their admission policies toward gay and lesbian applicants a detailed review of anti-homosexual biases in Italian scientific literature from 1930 to present the struggle for civil rights of the Chinese tongzhi community the emergence of gay and lesbian civil rights in India efforts to open the World Psychiatric Association and the International Psychoanalytical Association to gay and lesbian mental health professionals The Mental Health Professions and Homosexuality: International Perspectives provides first-hand perspectives on how different cultures have created different ways to view homosexuality and different ways to include—or exclude—gays and lesbians from social and public health policy. The book is an essential resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, physicians, social workers, anthropologists, and historians.

Homosexuality and the Crisis of Anglicanism by William L. Sachs Pdf

The Anglican conflict over homosexuality has drawn worldwide interest and divided the church. However, conflict within Christianity is not new. This book traces the steps by which the crisis emerged, and reveals the deeper debates within the church which underlie both the current controversy and much earlier splits. William L. Sachs contends that the present debate did not begin with opposition to homosexuality or in advocacy of it. He argues that, like past tensions, it originates in the diverging local contexts in which the faith is practised, and their differing interpretations of authority and communion. In the aftermath of colonialism, activists and reformers have taken on prominent roles for and against the status quo. The crisis reveals a Church in search of a new, global consensus about the appropriate forms of belief and mission.

Homosexuality and the European Court of Human Rights by Paul Johnson Pdf

Homosexuality and the European Court of Human Rights is the first book-length study of the Court’s jurisprudence in respect of sexual orientation. It offers a socio-legal analysis of the substantial number of decisions and judgments of the Strasbourg organs on the wide range of complaints brought by gay men and lesbians under the European Convention on Human Rights. Providing a systematic analysis of Strasbourg case law since 1955 and examining decades of decisions that have hitherto remained obscure, the book considers the evolution of the Court’s interpretation of the Convention and how this has fashioned lesbian and gay rights in Europe. Going beyond doctrinal analysis by employing a nuanced sociological consideration of Strasbourg jurisprudence, Paul Johnson shows how the Court is a site at which homosexuality is both socially constructed and regulated. He argues that although the Convention is conceived as a ‘living instrument’ to be interpreted ‘in the light of present-day conditions’ the Court’s judgments have frequently forged and advanced new social conditions in respect of homosexuality. Johnson argues that the Court’s jurisprudence has an extra-legal importance because it provides an authoritative and powerful discursive resource that can be mobilized by lesbians and gay men to challenge homophobic and heteronormative social relations in contemporary societies. As such, the book considers how the Court’s interpretation of the Convention might be evolved in the future to better protect lesbian and gay rights and lives.

Christianity and Controversies over Homosexuality in Contemporary Africa by Ezra Chitando,Adriaan van Klinken Pdf

Issues of homosexuality are the subject of public and political controversy in many African societies today. Frequently, these controversies receive widespread attention both locally and globally, such as with the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda. In the international media, these cases tend to be presented as revealing a deeply-rooted homophobia in Africa fuelled by religious and cultural traditions. But so far little energy is expended in understanding these controversies in all their complexity and the critical role religion plays in them. Complementing the companion volume, Public Religion and the Politics of Homosexuality in Africa, this book investigates Christian politics and discourses on homosexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors present case studies from various African countries, from Nigeria to South Africa and from Cameroon to Uganda, focusing on Pentecostal, Catholic and mainline Protestant churches. They critically examine popular Christian theologies that perpetuate homophobia and discrimination, but they also discuss contestations of such discourses and emerging alternative Christian perspectives that contribute to the recognition of sexual diversity, social justice and human rights in contemporary Africa.

Homosexuality by Emmanuel M. Ekwo Pdf

I have heard many arguments, questions and comments in reference to homosexuality, and there is now a burden on my heart to express plainly how offensive this is in the sight of God. I will try to merge all these arguments, questions and comments together and balance them by the Word of God. I pray you read this with an open heart and mind. Well, I am going to point out a few things that may come as a shock to you. You must approach this subject with an open mind, and form your own conclusions, since mind control is about telling people what to do and how to think, and I am certainly not trying to control you or your life. There are some aspects of reality that people nowadays are not taught, due to an overwhelming feeling of fear created by those very aspects of reality. There are mass movements of gays and lesbians going on around the world, even in largely homophobic enclaves such as in many African societies. All of these are not an accident folks; it is a careful orchestration by the one who seeks Man's destruction. I certainly see a prophetic significance in the recent homosexual upsurge. The modern homosexual upsweep is one phase of a declining trend in morals. When the disciples asked our Lord, "What shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the consummation of the age?" He told them that "iniquity shall abound" (Matthew 24:3, 12). There is today permissiveness and promiscuity in sexual behavior unprecedented in the history of America and of the world. There is little restraint upon the widespread of materials containing pictures and writings depicting erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement. This would be included in our Lord's prophecy about abounding iniquity.
