Hot Property by Pat Choate Pdf

The problem of pirating and counterfeiting has grown from small-scale imitations of Levi’s jeans and Zippo lighters to a phenomenon that costs the United States an estimated $200 billion dollars per year. Pirated DVDs, computer software, designer clothes, and machinery flood global markets, inflicting heavy losses on U.S. businesses, while counterfeit medicines, auto and aircraft parts, and baby formula regularly cause fatalities around the world. The theft of artistic and scientific creation is draining our economy. It is the great economic crime of the twenty-first century. Pat Choate, the author of the best-selling Agents of Influence, examines the roots of conflicts over intellectual property and how the establishment of patent and copyright protections helped propel the American economy. He interweaves the stories of Eli Whitney, Alexander Graham Bell, and Thomas Edison to illustrate how the United States transformed itself from a largely agricultural society into a manufacturing, scientific, and technological superpower, giving rise to further copyright and patent protection laws. He traces the emergence of Germany, Japan, and China as rivals to American primacy through copying, counterfeiting, and underpricing American products and media. He reveals the shockingly meager effectiveness of current efforts to defend American businesses, inventors, and artists from corporate espionage. And he sounds a powerfully convincing warning that the general indifference of our government toward the security of American intellectual property is already affecting job security and the economy in general (an estimated $24 billion is lost each year to pirated films, music recordings, books, and other merchandise in China alone). Hot Property is an impassioned, clear-eyed, and sound assessment of one of the most serious problems facing the American economy today, certain to be one of the most widely discussed books of the year.

Atomic Properties in Hot Plasmas by Jacques Bauche,Claire Bauche-Arnoult,Olivier Peyrusse Pdf

This book is devoted to the calculation of hot-plasma properties which generally requires a huge number of atomic data. It is the first book that combines information on the details of the basic atomic physics and its application to atomic spectroscopy with the use of the relevant statistical approaches. Information like energy levels, radiative rates, collisional and radiative cross-sections, etc., must be included in equilibrium or non-equilibrium models in order to describe both the atomic-population kinetics and the radiative properties. From the very large number of levels and transitions involved in complex ions, some statistical (global) properties emerge. The book presents a coherent set of concepts and compact formulas suitable for tractable and accurate calculations. The topics addressed are: radiative emission and absorption, and a dozen of other collisional and radiative processes; transition arrays between level ensembles (configurations, superconfigurations); effective temperatures of configurations, superconfigurations, and ions; charge-state distributions; radiative power losses and opacity. There are many numerical examples and comparisons with experiment presented throughout the book. The plasma properties described in this book are especially relevant to large nuclear fusion facilities such as the NIF (California) and the ITER (France), and to astrophysics. Methods relevant to the central-field configurational model are described in detail in the appendices: tensor-operator techniques, second-quantization formalism, statistical distribution moments, and the algebra of partition functions. Some extra tools are propensity laws, correlations, and fractals. These methods are applied to the analytical derivation of many properties, specially the global ones, through which the complexity is much reduced. The book is intended for graduate-level students, and for physicists working in the field.

Hot and Cold Theory: The Path Towards Personalized Medicine by Maryam Yavari Pdf

This book is about the theory of Hot and Cold, a mutual fundamental base of traditional medicines all around the world. The theory describes the dynamic balance state of the body on the axis of hot and cold for each individual and proposes the fact that deviation from this equilibrium is a predisposing factor for diseases. Such an approach helps practitioners to provide treatments tailored to the patient’s condition, not the disease. This book, for the first time, has gathered native descriptions of Hot and Cold theory in different traditional medicines, including traditional Chinese medicine, Persian (Humoral, Unani) medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and Latin American and Caribbean medicines. After defining the common ground, contemporary research - in nutrition, pharmacology, physiology and systems biology - has been explored using scientific methodology. This work is the result of an international collaboration of more than 30 scientists and scholars with high reputations in their fields. Hot and Cold theory, as a holistic individualized approach in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, can be merged into the novel fast-paced concepts in systems biology and precision medicine. Through this bridge, the authors propose that the Hot and Cold theory should be revisited more deeply by medical scientists, who are the main audience of this book, to pave the way towards integrated holistic personalized medicine.

Licensing Royalty Rates, 2022 Edition by Battersby, Grimes Pdf

This valuable reference presents the "going" royalty rate for virtually any product, including over 1,500 products and services in ten lucrative categories--art, celebrity, character and entertainment, collegiate, corporate, designer, event, sports, nonprofit and music. The essential reference for both beginning and more experienced licensing professionals. Knowing the "going" royalty rate for virtually any product is as simple as reaching for the newly published Licensing Royalty Rates, 2022 Edition. Setting a royalty rate too high can scare away potential licensees, while accepting a lower rate can cost licensors hundreds of thousands of dollars. Licensing Royalty Rates, 2022 Edition provides all the information you need to calculate the right rate every time. The data in Licensing Royalty Rates is compiled using information from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. After careful review by a blue-ribbon panel of expert licensing consultants uniquely qualified to know what the appropriate rate range is for specific properties in each licensing category, the information is organized into four time-saving sections that give researchers fast access to comprehensive statistical and analytical data: Royalty rate listing alphabetically by licensed product --provides a detailed alphabetical listing of products and their suggested rate range across all product categories. Royalty rate listing by international trademark class--lets you quickly identify subtle royalty rate differences between similar products within specific international trademark classes. Checklist of licensed products and services--offers a quick-reference to products with a high potential for licensing. Comprehensive list of licensed products and services--presents a detailed list of all surveyed products and services within a trademark class for preparing intent-to-use trademark applications. Written in conjunction with a field of advisors, this study represents the twenty-first in an annual series of royalty rate studies in the merchandising and trademark licensing area. While these changes are generally subtle, should you find yourself in the negotiation of a multi-year license agreement for a hot property, a half-point difference in royalty rates over a five-year period can mean millions of dollars in additional (or decreased) royalty income. Seemingly minor changes can have substantial consequences. In addition to the table of royalty rates that we have provided in years past, the 2022 Edition has important features that should be of interest to our readers: A new subsection discussing common marketing funds (CMFs). CMFs are relatively common in the industry and are included in roughly fifty percent of cases. Updated royalty rate surveys with product categories listed alphabetically and by trademark class. Survey charts have been completely revamped to include a range of typical royalty rates for each product category, as well as the industry average royalty rate for each particular product. Sections 2 and 3 now include royalty rate surveys for interior design properties. An updated listing of the top franchises from 2021. Updated Section 6 detailing the state of the licensing industry, with updated survey and statistical information on worldwide licensing revenues by property type and product category, as well as the latest information on the top properties and agents in the industry. The 2022 survey includes property segment category for interior designers as licensor properties. This is a small but growing segment of the licensing marketplace. Updated listing of licensing agents and consultants actively working in the industry. New Appendix containing the latest reported court decisions with respect to royalty rates in all facets of the industry, including consumer products, computer technology, telecommunications, plant patents, biotechnology, video games, music, and reasonable royalty rates.
